[TMZ] NBA Star Jaylen Brown Signs with Donda Sports

The superstar athletes are lining up to work with Kanye West -- TMZ Sports has learned Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown is the first NBA player to sign with Donda Sports.

As we previously reported, future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald became one of the first big names to go public with his decision to partner with Ye for off-field ventures ... saying it was a "no-brainer" to join forces.

Sources tell us Ye and Brown have been tight for a while now, but things were made official after West attended the Warriors vs. Celtics game in March.

The signs were there -- the two posed together postgame ... and in fact, Brown was spotted wearing a Donda Sports hoodie while hanging with A$AP Ferg afterwards.

So, why 25-year-old Brown?? We're told Donda eyed the Eastern Conference champ because of his intelligence, social activism and charitable work ... as well as his success on the court.

On top of that, the deal was especially important to Ye because Jaylen is a God-fearing man ... and his mother emphasized the importance of education at a young age, just like Donda.

We're told Ye thinks Brown is underappreciated ... and wants to bring him to "superhero" status during his career and long after his playing days.

Brown averaged more than 20 points a game in the ECF against the Miami Heat ... and is slated to play a huge role in his first NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors.

What kind of defensive strategy can the Miami Heat employ to stop the Steph-Klay-Poole Offense?

With the Heat Warriors finals now imminent, what kind of defensive strategy can the Heat use to stop this juggernaut.

1-10 this Warriors team is absolutely stacked. Even though Kerr usually only goes for 7-8 man rotations, its going to be tough to stop this team. I'm not sure how my Heat will stop this Warriors team, but what kind of strategy should they use to slow down the splash triplets

Just rewatched the games last night. Marcus Smart flopped 11 times.

I counted 11 occasions where Marcus Smart either exaggerated minimal contact, fell down on purpose, or faked contact.

I don’t know if Smart is just a mediocre player and feels the need to cheat the system in order to gain an edge (I save my Chris Paul thoughts for another time), but he’s got a mental problem.

The league has a serious issue on its hands and Marcus Smart is example 1A.

Hi r/NBA! I'm Muggsy Bogues, the 5'3" former starting point guard for the Charlotte Hornets. I spent my entire childhood being told I should be doing anything else besides basketball -- then went on to make the All-ACC first team at Wake Forest and play 14 seasons in the NBA.

Being the shortest player to ever play in the league had its challenges, but as my mom once told me, people can’t measure your heart. That's something that I've tried to instill in Steph Curry, Chris Paul, Nate Robinson and the other young guys coming up, which you can read about in my recent interview with MEL Magazine. Celtics Revenge tour 2022: If the Celtics beat the the Heat they will have beaten the last three teams who eliminated them from the playoffs the last three years in the same round they were eliminated.

Almost guaranteed this post will jinx them lol. But in 2019 they lost to the Bucks in the semis, in 2020 they lost to the Heat in the ECF, and in 2021 they lost to the Nets in 1st round. Let's see if they can complete the revenge tour and make their first Finals since 2010...

Thoughts? If the All NBA teams were positionless, Booker probably gets kicked off in favor of Embiid and the First Team is Luka/Tatum/Giannis/Embiid/Jokic

LaVine has emerged as a legit scorer ever since he was traded from Minnesota to the Chicago Bulls in 2017 ... averaging 24 points this past season.

The Lakers will have some serious competition as they try to rebuild after a horrendous 2022 ... with Chicago, Portland and Atlanta among teams potentially interested in landing him.

[HoopsHype] Deandre Ayton's agent: 'We're disappointed. We wanted a max contract'

After the Suns declined to sign Ayton to a five-year, rookie-scale max extension before the 2021-22 season, restricted free agency is now on the horizon for the athletic big man. During the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, Ayton’s agent Bill Duffy discussed Ayton’s future on SiriusXM’s NBA show. “We’re disappointed. We wanted a max contract,” Duffy said. “He went out and was a solider the whole year, played well, improved his statistics. So, we’re proud of him. A lot of guys handle things differently, but he was very mature about it. Things will work out for Deandre. He’s a valuable player. There’s other teams in the league as well. He’s a restricted free agent, so we’ll see how this process unfolds.”

Steph Curry selflessness is the main reason for the Warriors continued dynasty

Steph Curry continues to amaze me every single year not only with his play but his unselfishness. He is biggest reason for the Warriors dynasty because of his selfless attitude. He never makes any drama even when he had to come off the bench for a while there was never a sniff of any discontent. Even when KD came he took a step back to allow him to thrive as well. This guy is a consummate professional and a credit to the game.

Plenty of time was spent discussing Poole grabbing at Morant's knee, but Pritchard's play on Jimmy's knee last night was arguably worse

https://twitter.com/courtcorner/status/1528373326355259392?s=20&t=ZoIt7cWyUHmAJLRjCch1GQ

Same knee he had to leave the game for in the 2nd half due to inflammation. Looks much worse than the Poole play (which was mostly nothing) from this angle. Just straight up grabs the shit out of his knee intentionally to trip him. What the fuck?

Mbappe just signed a 3 year contract worth $633 million. If there was no salary cap in NBA what do you think highest contracts would go for?

So Mbappe's contract was until this year, he was about to leave to Real Madrid until PSG came down with this monstrous offer. He is getting a sign on fee of 158 million USD and then he's getting paid more than 2 million USD per WEEK.

If NBA had no salary cap who do you think would have the highest contract and how much do you think they would earn per year?

EDIT: My figure in title is post-tax, his contract is actually worth over $1 billion pre-tax (same as contracts in NBA are reported)

Matt Barnes: “If you don't like Steph Curry, then you're just a hater”

“I think so," Barnes told Liffmann. "I think if he's not able to, I don't think it hurts but it will definitely help. The more rings, the better, and the one knock that people always have on Steph is ... 'you won a championship but you didn't win the Finals MVP' when he possibly could have and should have won Finals MVP.

"I say this with all due respect to [Andre] Iguodala in the '15-16 series, Steph played his heart out in that series but Iguodala got it and earned it and obviously, we know what [Kevin Durant] did when he helped get the Warriors to the Finals to make his run. So I think it'll definitely help and I have a feeling that if they're able to get there and win it, I feel like this is going to be Steph's Finals MVP moment as well."

Barnes also joined 95.7 The Game's "Steiny & Guru" on Tuesday, where he explained why Curry deserves another ring.

"It would be huge and he deserves it,” Barnes said. “If you don't like Steph Curry, then you're just a hater. What can you really not like about him? He’s himself. He plays the game the right way. He plays the game the right way. He’s selfless. Rarely, in this day and age, these selfless superstars. He's a selfless superstar. I think it’d be huge if they’re able to get it. It’s no lie this team is getting older.”

[Lowe] NBA has a backup lottery machine if the first one fails. They have a second backup in event the venue loses power: an official NBA basketball with a hole cut into the top of it. With no power, they would stick the 14 pingpong balls inside the basketball and have an official draw them by hand

Finally, always remember this: The NBA has a backup lottery machine if the first one fails. They have a second backup in the event the venue loses power: an official NBA basketball with a hole cut into the top of it. With no power, they would stick the 14 pingpong balls inside the basketball and have an official draw them by hand. (In the old days, they used that ball now and then for smaller decisions, including breaking ties in draft order, officials have said.)

On Tuesday morning, the NBA went to retrieve the ball-with-a-hole-in-it. They found it, but there was a problem: It was a Spalding. The NBA switched from Spalding to Wilson this season. Officials scrambled to find a Wilson ball, and then sliced a hole in the top of it.

An Alternative to the "Phil Jackson Rule": 39/40 of the last NBA champions have won 40 out of their last 60 regular season games

The exception are the 1995 Rockets who have won 34 out of their last 60.

I know this isn't the point of Phil Jackson Rule which is to predict the contenders after less than 60 games, but I've seen the Phil Jackson Rule used to say that the only team left in the playoffs that qualifies for it is the Warriors.

The Phil Jackson Rule only predicted 37 out of the last 40 championships. This one predicted 39.

The teams that qualify for the alternative rule in this season's final four? Celtics, Heat, Mavericks.

They know that we’re going to come every single year,” the 26-year-old Brooks said after scoring 30 points and making Curry work for all of his 29 (on 10-of-27 shooting overall and 6-of-17 shooting from 3-point range). “We’re young, and they’re getting old. If Giannis goes back to back this year, is he higher than KD all time?

If Giannis goes back to back championships this year (hypothetically) will he rank higher than Kevin Durant on the All time list?

At this point he'll have the same number of championships and FMVPs (more meaningful too), 1 more MVP and a DPOTY to KD's Zero. He doesn't have KD's longevity but his accolades are without a doubt already superior.

Draymond on the Warrior's performance in Game 3:

"We were up 20 points.. Ja Morant, I know what the conversation was when they huddled up: we been here before, we know what it takes, let's go out here and let's get back in this game and win the game. And Ja Morant came out playing like that, they were up 20 points, Ja started to go on his rampage with scoring every play, and I think he looked up like wow I'm starting to go crazy with those Ja layups only Ja makes, and he looked up and they were down 25. And that was big for us because that was to show them this isn't the Minnesota Timberwolves. You're no longer playing that team, this is the Golden State Warriors. This is championship level basketball, this is how we do it.

How to get your fanbase to rally behind the hiring of literally any coach.

  1. Announce you're interviewing Mark Jackson.

  2. ???

  3. Hire anyone else.

  4. Profit?

Feel like it's happened at least a dozen times over the years. A couple times with Knick teams. The absolute wave of relief you get when you see your team hired literally anyone else is euphoric. It's like watching an 8 year old walk across a highway unscathed.

Is it artificial though? Is Mark Jackson getting paid for this somehow? The amount of goodwill a team generates when they DON'T hire him is massive.

What do ya'll think? The conspiracy runs deep...

What is the greatest big man play of all time?

Mildly interesting stat that i honestly had not idea it was true but according to https://twitter.com/ScottGrodsky/status/1523120149888663553 it is.

Insane to think that one of the best if not the best shooter of all time has same number of 40 points as someone who lives mainly in the paint.

If anything it demonstrates how scoring can come in many forms and how both players are dominating in their own way.

If Portland can’t trade for Jerami Grant, they’ll probably look in Bridges’ direction. These teams with cap space that are debating where to spend money would probably go for a young wing. Another interesting note: Paul Reed has only allowed 2 Bam field goals, but has allowed Bam to score 8 additional points from the free throw line.

Grizzlies sideline reporter Rob Fischer takes to Twitter to argue that Jordan Poole should be suspended for taking 8 steps away from the bench after Gary Payton II’s injury.

Original tweet: Thinking back on G2 and Dillon Brooks Flagrant 2… Warriors players left bench, including Jordan Poole, while coaches were actively trying to get them back. Wonder if that is being looked at. We saw @jarenjacksonjr suspended for same thing at @nyknicks

The rules state that any player who leaves a bench during an altercation will receive a suspension. Poole took a few steps onto the court after the foul during a dead ball. The problem with applying this to the current situation is that there was no altercation, in my opinion at least. This opinion was shared by several members of the media who pushed back on Fischer’s comments.

John Hollinger responded saying he would be shocked if there was a suspension, Fischer replies “What about 8 steps? He got close to the basket and a coach was trying to get him back. Asking for a friend.”

Hollinger responds to this by saying there was no altercation, to which Fischer says “You are not the decider!!!

Warriors reporter Jason Dumas responds: “The rule is that you can’t leave the bench during an altercation. Not that you can’t to check on an injured teammate. I feel like you know this and it’s just a tweet in bad faith.

Several other media members responded to Fischer’s tweet saying there was no altercation and that he’s just reaching.

[Brady] Admits that he fumbled in the Tuck Rule game

The league needs to come down harder on all dirty plays, not just the ones that result in injury.

The playoffs this year have been particularly bad with dirty plays. We have had trae young getting chopped in the throat, capela pulling someone on a rebound (which ironically injured himself) Clarke getting dragged down in mid air, and so much more. Now that it’s finally led to an injury the league will likely step in and do something about it, but it’s a too little too late situation.

The league is letting things escalate too much before getting involved and it’s hurting the product. I like psychical playoff basketball. I do not enjoy watching two teams head hunt each other’s stars and escalate to dirtier and dirtier plays until it gets out of control.

Aqib Talib nearly perfectly predicted the Lions’ offseason going all the way back to December

While announcing the Cardinals game in December, Aqib Talib predicted what the Lions’ offseason would look like (link):

Offensive line: team strength when healthy

1st overall pick: take Aidan Hutchinson

Late 1st round pick: take a top WR (may need to trade up to get your guy)

Jared Goff: one more year to show he’s the QB

This is pretty amazing. Other than the part about the 1st overall pick he got it 100% spot on.

Later, announcing the Seahawks game in January, he said:

"If you could find a way to add (Jameson Williams) on the outside and let Amon-Ra St. Brown work inside, with Hockenson, with Swift, with this O-line, with the way Jared Goff has been playing lately, this could be a dangerous offense. This could be a dangerous team."

With 11 points last night, Jae Crowder surpassed Anthony Davis in career playoff points.

With 11 points last night, Jae Crowder surpassed Anthony Davis in career playoff points.

It's something that seems impossible but Jae Crowder has played in more than 60 additional playoff games than Anthony Davis despite both players being drafted in 2012.

Jae Crowder now ranks 37th amongst active players.

[Fischer] The 76ers have maintained that Rivers and team leadership remain aligned about their future together. Rivers' contract runs through 2024-25 at $8 million per season, which is a hefty price for ownership to swallow.

From Jake Fischer:

Charlotte may be D'Antoni's best chance to return to the sideline in 2022. He's been a popular name floated among league personnel as a potential replacement for Doc Rivers in Philadelphia should Rivers or the 76ers decide to change direction at the conclusion of these playoffs. But despite widespread rumblings of Rivers' intrigue in the Lakers' opening, and incessant talk of Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey perhaps desiring a different play-caller, the 76ers have maintained that Rivers and team leadership remain aligned about their future together. Rivers' contract runs through 2024-25 at $8 million per season, which is a hefty price for ownership to swallow.

[O'Connell] I know I am not usually @utahjazz breaking news guy, but a source close to situation has informed me that Rudy Gobert is at "him or me" point with Donovan Mitchell and will demand that one of them be traded in next few days. Doesn't feel they will win championship together.

Seems very uncharacteristic of Gobert and I would not be surprised to learn this is totally bunk but Rudy would also not be wrong here.

Rudy feels that his own numbers are consistent or getting better, while Don is D liability and is falling off in terms of explosiveness. Gobert also aware of at least 1 Western Conference power that would be willing to pay handsomely for his abilities. (NBA teams never tamper..)

Edit: KSL Sports has picked this up:

“He doesn’t think that he and Donovan together are going to win at the level that would be satisfying for someone who’s a three-time Defensive Player of the Year,” O’Connell said.

Under Gobert and Mitchell, the Jazz have failed to make it out of the second round in five trips to the postseason, and have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in three of the last four seasons.

Now, Gobert is planning to inform the Jazz of his preference per O’Connell.

“My understanding is that that conversation has yet to happen and is expected to happen in the next couple of days,” O’Connell said. “He’s going to express the him or me sentiments, and either ask that he be relocated or that Donovan be relocated.”

[OC] The real Mr. Irrelevants are not who you think they are.

At the end of the 2022 NFL draft, with the 262nd pick, Iowa State QB, Brock Purdy joined a select group of players who were drafted last, each famously known as “Mr. Irrelevant”. Mr. Irrelevants are remembered in NFL lore forever. Most of them (64% since 2000) go on to play in the NFL and some of them end up with long careers (K, Ryan Succop; DB, Michael Green). But more importantly, a player who is drafted last in the NFL and becomes Mr. Irrelavant will be celebrated on a scale much greater than the vast majority of players who were drafted. Aside from the title that very few can claim, Mr Irrelevant gets an entire week of events celebrating their new elite status. During the week in Newport Beach, CA, they are recognized at a number of events such as a sailing regatta, a baseball game, media events, a charity fundraiser, and finally culminating in a banquet in their honor, where they are awarded the Lowsman Trophy. Mr irrelevant is anything but irrelevant. He is celebrated. He becomes a part of NFL history before he ever steps on the field.

When you hear the names: Tae Crowder, Trey Quinn, Ryan Succop, Grant Stuard, and now Brock Purdy…every one of you immediately thinks “Mr. Irrelavant”. We remember these names, we associated them with the elite group they are in. We think pleasant thoughts about how they are celebrated for being last. People like me, underdogs who are perpetually in last place, look up to these lovable heroes because they give us hope. Hope that we can be last and loved also.

But what do you think when you hear these names: Chris Neild, Jordan Brailford, Josh Hull, and Matthew Dayes?

crickets?

You’re probably not thinking anything. Well, these guys were the 2nd to last pick in the draft. They don’t have a trophy. They didn’t get invited to a baseball game or a regatta. There is no banquet in their honor. You read their names and thought…nothing. There is nothing more irrelevant than being the guy drafted right before Mr. Irrelevant. These unfortunate souls are the real mr. irellevants. (Throughout this post I will refer to them as lower case mr. irrelevant) .

In Talladega Nights Ricky Bobby famously said, If you ain't first, you're last. But I’m of the opinion that if you’re not last, but almost last, you’re last.

To illustrate how impactful and life-changing being drafted last is compared to being drafted 2nd to last, I did a Google Trends search comparing this year’s Mr. Irrelavant, Brock Purdy to AJ Arcuri who was drafted 2nd to last. At their peaks, the moment they were drafted, Arcuri had only 9% of the search traffic that Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy had. Some skeptics will say, well… one is a QB and one is a Tackle, and that can influence this search data as well. While that may be a factor, we can also compare their trend lines before and after they were drafted. The gap between the two lines widens about 3X to 5X by comparing the two players when they were both just football players to the point when one of the two guys became immortalized as Mr. Irrelevant.

For those drafted 2nd to last to make their mark, they are going to have to do it on the field. They aren’t walking into the NFL with the privilege of already having made history, it must be earned. Earning it is not easy for someone drafted this late, but it’s not impossible. AJ Arcuri, the real mr. irrelevant can take solace in knowing that since 2000, 82% of the 2nd to last pick have gone on to play in the NFL, for an average career of 2.7 years.

We can look to guys like Denzelle Good for inspiration. Good was drafted 2nd to last in 2015 by the Colts. He played in 62 games with 43 starts and lasted in the league until he was 30 years old. His best year was 2020 when he started 14 games for the Raiders and earned an AV of 8.

Alphonso Boone, drafted 2nd to last by Detroit in 2000, ended up playing 10 years in the league. He was a starter or spot starter for 8 consecutive years spanning seasons with Chicago, KC, and SD. He played in 129 games and started 42 games. At age 31, he made a Super Bowl with Chicago in 2006; he played in the game and recorded two tackles. Unfortunately, the Bears lost and he didn’t get a ring. Twice in his life, he was runner-up to immortality (the draft and Super Bowl).

A guy who really shouldn’t be considered as one of the real mr. irellevants because he gets to go to parties with his brother Rob, is Dan Gronkowski. He was drafted 2nd to last by Detroit in 2009. Dan was a tight end who stuck around for three years in the league and finished his career by playing five games in 2011 on the Patriots with his brother, Rob.

Here is a list of the rest of the real mr. irrelevants. These are the guys drafted behind everyone on earth except for the only draft spot that matters, last.

Some notable highlights for mr. irrelevant

  • There are three positions represented in the 2nd to last pick group that are not in the Mr. Irrelevant group: Tackles (4), Guard (1), and Running Back (3)
  • Washington and Buffalo each have three mr. irrelevants out of the 23 selected since 2000

Not that I should give the players awarded the title of Mr. Irrelevant any more recognition than they already have. Here is the list of players and some key stats for Mr. Irrelevant since 2000.

https://preview.redd.it/5eohkxnp3ww81.png?width=1696&format=png&auto=webp&s=596be38a5d8c063a80c59e0760a08003ef448e11

Some notable highlights for Mr. Irrelevant

  • There are three Mr. Irrelevant Quarterbacks (Purdy, Chad Kelly, and Chandler Harnish), but none have been drafted in the 2nd to last group.
  • Arizona, Houston, and Oakland have three Mr. Irrelevants each since 2000 combining to make up 39% of all Mr. Irellevant’s selected.

Cycling has its version of Mr. Irrelevant. In the Tour de France the cyclist each year who will finish in last place out of nearly 200 riders, is called the Lantern Rouge which gets its name from the red light that use to hang on the back of the caboose of trains. Historically, the Lantern Rouge would gain a lot of publicity and earn money through appearance fees as a result of their last-place finish. There have been times in the past when cyclists who had no chance to win or help their teams would instead try to battle each other for a last-place finish. These guys got it… they knew there is nothing worse than coming in 2nd to last place. We all want to leave a legacy, some of us do it the hard way, by becoming amazing at something, by winning, by being great. Some of us do it by being the worst, by being last, by lucking into the perfect scenario. But most of us aren’t great, we aren’t last, we aren’t lucky, we are Beau Sandland, 2nd to last pick out of Montana State in the 2016 NFL draft. We are irrelevant.

This is one of my Meaningless but Fun posts. Other nonsense from my Meaningless but Fun series is below:

Mac Jones and Kyler Murray are the worst in the NFL at this one thing...

Mitch Trubisky is the best in NFL history at this one thing…
