Biyernes, Oktubre 27, 2023

The Minnesota Vikings have ZERO rushing TDs on the season.

That's absolutely wild to me. They have 134 rush attempts on the season and not a single one has gone for a TD. 18 total TDs (16 passing, 2 defensive).

Who is quietly having a terrible season?

Last year I posted this same question. This is meant to exclude the players who are very publicly and noticeably playing terrible football. Who on your team is flying under the radar as having a bad year?

[Weiss] Marcus Smart on being traded by the Celtics: "I was told everything was good after asking multiple times. Like, ‘I’m hearing (rumors), what’s going on?’ And they’re like, ‘No, you’re good, you’re good, you’re good.’ And then when I do hear about the trade, it’s from Shams on Twitter"

After signing a four-year extension with Boston in 2021 and cementing his place as the starting point guard, the questions finally stopped. But he understood a deal would come one day.

“If I’m being quite frank, I knew I would be traded eventually,” Smart said. “Just figured it would be the next season, just based off my contract and with the new CBA. We already knew that. But it was just the way it happened. I was told everything was good after asking multiple times. Like, ‘I’m hearing (rumors), what’s going on?’ And they’re like, ‘No, you’re good, you’re good, you’re good.’ And then when I do hear about the trade, it’s from Shams (Charania) on Twitter before I hear from the team.”

Giannis on Lebron: "For 21 years, you never get in trouble, to be able to take in his family, protect this family, raise his kids the right way, you know, be happily married, all those things, it’s perfect. He’s kind of like setting the blueprint for the rest of us to go forward."

“I think people will look back at that body of work over 20 years or however long it’s been, and when it’s over with, I think they’ll have more respect (for James),” said Damian Lillard, Giannis’ star teammate on the Milwaukee Bucks. “For the guys who are in it like I am, and the rest of us who do this job, got to put our bodies through it and got to deal with the pressure and have to perform and all of these things to go along with our personal lives, I think people like us respect it.

“But when it’s over, what I think you guys, fans that just have watched, will respect him more later.”

Lillard’s first year in the NBA was in 2012, following James’ first NBA title. Lillard said he was in the eighth grade when LeBron made his NBA debut and to this day marvels at how James exceeded the expectations placed upon his career while under unprecedented scrutiny.

“I was watching him on ESPN back then, so to have that type of hype and to live up to it and then some,” Lillard said, “to come out as your all-time leading scorer in this league, to win how he’s won, to be as scrutinized as he is and has been. … I can just respect how he (has handled the pressure).”

Antetokounmpo’s first season was James’ last in Miami. Since, LeBron went home to Cleveland for a second stint, reaching four NBA Finals and winning the 2016 title. Then James left for Los Angeles, where he became the first player in NBA history to be the best player on title teams in three cities.

Giannis now has two MVPs and one championship to his name. He said James has provided the “blueprint” for any star seeking longevity atop the sport.

“For 21 years, you never get in trouble, to be able to take in his family, protect this family, raise his kids the right way, you know, be happily married, all those things, it’s perfect,” Antetokounmpo said. “He’s kind of like setting the blueprint for the rest of us to go forward. That’s what I want. I want to be able to do what I do on the court consistently, be good, be healthy, be available for my team, be able to, you know, raise my family in a bubble away from what I do on the court for them to have a normal life as much as I can. Stay out of trouble.

“And hopefully one day, you know, when I’m done from the game of basketball … maybe you mention me? I don’t know. But he sets up the blueprint for all the athletes that enter the NBA to follow.”

What are your best guesses about the NBA 5 years from now?

After silently judging as I scrolled through posts riddled with hot takes from 5 years ago I thought...

What are your hottest takes about how the NBA will look 5 years from now? (Go wild with your guesses, nobody will be judging you......)

My hot takes are

  1. Josh Giddy will be in the MVP race
  2. The Booklyn Nets will have either made or won the finals due to Bridges and Ben Simmons showing out
  3. LeBron will continue to refuse to retire, while still putting up 18/4/4. And will blame it on wanting to play with his wife's uncles barbers daughters stepson 17 years from now.

10 years ago today: "This is a terrible quarter of football. Both of these teams are just BAD."

That was Mike Tirico's quote during the MNF game between the Vikings and the Giants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRynZ2xrWsI

I miss the Gruden-Tirico combination; they played off of each other well and weren't afraid to trash the games when they sucked.

If Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are called The Jays, why aren't Devin Booker and Kevin Durant called The Evins?

Title. I was pontificating on this while in the shower. The Celtics duo has such a quick, snappy nickname, so I was wondering why the same isn't applied to the Suns' star players. What do y'all think?

Russell Wilson and Drew Lock have both started 21 games for the Broncos. Let's see how they compare.

Wilson: 4829 yards, 63.2%, 28:15, 3 rushing TDS
Lock: 4740 yards, 60.6%, 25:20, 5 rushing TDS

Drew Lock was on a rookie contract. Russell Wilson signed a $245 million contract extension when he was traded.

Without a doubt the Broncos could be doing just as well, if not better, if they kept Lock and used the picks and cap space they spent on Wilson to improve the roster around him.

[AP] BREAKING: Charlotte Hornets forward turns himself in

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges turned himself in on Friday after an arrest warrant was issued for an alleged protection order violation stemming from a domestic violence case last year.

Bridges turned himself in early in the morning in Lincoln County, a suburb of Charlotte. He was accompanied by his attorney, according to Larry Seagle, the public information officer for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Bridges appeared before a district court judge and was released on $1,000 bond.

What's the first thing you tell a basketball fan that wakes up from a 10 year coma?

Stealing this from r/baseball. What would you tell an NBA fan that was in coma for 10 years about the NBA now?

[Bruno] Bridges is accused of throwing billiard balls at his ex-girlfriend's car, damaging the windshield, and threatening her. Additionally, due to children being in the car when the incident occurred, he is also charged with child abuse.

Breaking on Miles Bridges: The criminal summons states Bridges violated a protective order during a custody exchange on Tuesday. It alleges he threw billiard balls at his ex-girlfriend’s car, damaging her windshield. During the exchange, he threatened to withhold child support and “take everything from her,” according to the summons.

Bridges is also facing a child abuse charge because there were children in the car when the vehicle window broke from the billiard balls, according to the criminal summons.

The victim in question is Bridges’ longtime ex-girlfriend. The pair has several children and is in the middle of a custody battle.

Is this one of the best offensive rookie classes we’ve ever seen?

Multiple players come to mind who would be OROY front runners other years.

CJ Stroud has been off to a historic start without yet throwing an interception while also putting up impressive yardage numbers.

Anthony Richardson has also looked great and could be one of the most entertaining QBs in the league.

Nacua and A’chane have also had historic starts to their careers. Nacua has been arguably the best possession receiver in the league so far while A’chane might be the best big play rookie since his teammate Tyreek Hill.

LaPorta is already looking like one of the best receiving tight ends in the league (Iowa man)

Bijaan Robinson was expected to be one of the leagues best RBs from day one and has looked every bit the part. No other RB has as big an impact on the success or failure of his teams offense.

Even Zay Flowers has already slotted himself in as the top receiver for one of the league’s best offenses

And there’s plenty of rookies who can have second half breakouts. Guys like Tank Dell and Dalton Kincaid come to mind.

Obviously A’chane and Richardson are looking at extended absences, but hopefully they miss the minimum amount of time and can still put up impressive season stats by the end of the year.

Brian Windhorst says that Tatum's poor shooting recently might be because he forwent wrist surgery in offseason: "He got 3 or 4 opinions and, to use [Tatum's] words, 'Not all of them suggest surgery.' He said he did what he needed to do and hopes that's going to be enough."

Source: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/brian-windhorst-the-hoop-collective/id293376147?i=1000630669268

Clip-off: https://streamable.com/lseisw

Brian Windhorst said that there was a very high chance that Tatum was going to have wrist surgery in the offseason, but chose not to after seeking several opinions from different doctors. The Celtics are also reportedly not worried about the state of his wrist because it's his non-shooting hand. But Windhorst speculates that Tatum may have forwent a surgery that he needed and is now paying for it with his shooting slump.

Last night Jayson Tatum shot 3-13 from the field and 0-4 from three in 27 minutes against the 76ers.

And a few days ago, this clip of Jayson Tatum missing jumpers in an open gym went viral. Many saying that Tatum "lost his shooting touch" which could be attributed with his injured wrist.

De’Von Achane is having a crazy start to his career.

I’m a Patriots fan but what this guy is doing is just crazy.

He has been active for only four of five games, yet is second in the NFL in rushing yards. In his first game (wk 2 vs NE), he only had 2 touches for 9 yards.

In the three games since, he’s had:

  • 22 touches, 233 yards, 4 TDs
  • 11 touches, 120 yards, 2 TDs
  • 12 touches, 165 yards, 1 TD

That’s 518 yards and 7 TDs over the last three games. He leads the NFL in rushing yards per carry with an insane 12.1y/a

It’ll be interesting to see how the season progresses for this rookie. He’s off to a lightning start.

Jokic's 53pts vs Suns is the 1st time a center has scored 50 in the playoffs since 1975.

Jokic shot 20/30, with 1/2 in the 3pt line and 11/13 from the free throwline with a statline of 53/4/11 on 66/50/85 shooting splits in 38 minutes. He is the first Center since 1975 to score 50 pts in the playoffs since Bob Mcdoo vs the Washington Bullets.

Crazy how this game 4 of him was a historic performance but wasnt talked much about. And crazy too that Hakeem and Shaq didnt score 50. Though Hakeem had a 49/25 game which is even crazier though it was a crazy overtime game and played for 53 minutes.

Sabado, Oktubre 7, 2023

Of the expected bottom three teams in the West (POR/HOU/SAS), which team do you think has the best chance at a breakthrough in 2023/24?

I asked this 6 weeks ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1631fr9/of_the_expected_bottom_three_teams_in_the_west/ before the Blazers trades occurred, KPJ was arrested for abuse, and the Spurs released Reggie Bullock, who then signed with the Rockets.

Dame's trade was 10-11 days ago now and KPJ's domestic violence arrest almost a month old, so we've had time to settle and really digest and analyze the moves that have been made and where these teams currently stand with the season less than three weeks away.

I personally believe after the dust has settled that all three teams have 30+ win rosters on talent. They may not finish with 30+ wins but I believe the talent is there on all three squads to do so. When I asked this question 6 weeks ago, the answers were varied, pretty split between Houston and Portland. But you can't count out the Spurs with their young guys taking leaps and having Wemby and Pop.

Spurs starting lineup remains in a bit of flux with no confirmation made other than Wemby and Collins being the starting PF/C. Tre Jones remains the odds on favorite to start at PG and Vassell at SG but nothing is set in stone currently. Pop will be experimenting with different combinations throughout preseason. Their bench is an intriguing mix of veterans and youngs with Doug McDermott having become a staple in San Antonio and dynamic offensive weapon with his shooting and off ball activity and Malaki Branham showing real potential as a scorer. DeVonte Graham will give the Spurs a steady hand as a backup PG who doubles a strong shooter off the dribble....they struggled last season at the backup ballhandler spot.

Blazers will be starting Thybulle at the SF most likely for defensive purposes with Sharpe coming off the bench at the 3. Their top 8 of Henderson/Simons/Thybulle/Grant/Ayton with Brogdon/Sharpe/Williams is a very competitive one. Very talented, but lacking in experience with one another as a group, and with a rookie PG. We will see how they mesh early and hit the ground running.

Rockets will be starting VanVleet/Green/Brooks/Smith/Sengun, with Amen Thompson now as the backup PG with KPJ's arrest. Bullock/Eason/Landale being rotation players along with likely Jae'Sean Tate as a backup wing. Rockets' starting 5 has a pretty nice blend of creators and playmakers and players who have skills that should mesh along with a coach with a pretty strong if somewhat short track record in Ime Udoka. Rockets backup rotation has the potential to be very strong defensively on paper...we will see how Amen Thompson acclimates as a lead ballhandler and we will see whether this team has enough shooting offensively to live up to their goals.

Which of these three teams do you think has the best chance to make a breakthrough this season and compete for or potentially even make the play-in? Do you see any of the three winning 30+ games? Do you believe they all have 30+ wins in them? Do you think they'll chase the play-in if they're in position to make it?

Why does Milwaukee get clowned so much more than Boston for losing to Miami when, in every conceivable way, Boston should’ve been better positioned to win.

Milwaukee was missing Giannis, a bare minimum top 2 player in the league, for over half the series, and their coach was completely out of it as his brother just died.

Meanwhile Boston faced an injured Jimmy Butler who heavily underperformed, Gabe Vincent missed a game, and Boston’s best players were all healthy.

They lost to the same team, and Boston faced them when injuries were entirely on Boston’s side, yet it’s “haha Milwaukee lost to an 8 seed” and not a peep about Boston.

If you want to use the argument that Boston made it to the conference finals and that’s why it isn’t as bad, the Celtics likely lose to the Hawks round 1 if Tatum goes down and Mazzulla shits the bed like what happened to the Bucks.

Why is there this double standard?

James Harden has "zero intentions of rejoining [the Philadelphia 76ers] in earnest," sources tell Sam Amick of The Athletic.

Harden skipped media day in Philadelphia on Monday, but was en route to Fort Collins, Colorado to join the Sixers on Tuesday.

Sources also tell The Athletic Harden "remains just as incensed as before at [Daryl] Morey and is still liable to disappear on the Sixers at any moment."

The Sixers remain adamant that they will not trade Harden if it diminishes their chances of competing in the playoffs this season.

Martes, Oktubre 3, 2023

If you feel like the games haven't been great this year, you are correct! This is the most blowouts (20+ point wins) the NFL's seen through 4 weeks since 2014.

Last time we had this many blowouts, your rookies of the year were Odell Beckham and Aaron Donald. Drew Brees led the league in passing yards, DeMarco Murray led the league in rushing, and Mr. Big Chest himself was 1st in receiving.

Brian Windhorst regarding Heat trading for Jrue Holiday : “The Miami Heat submitted a significant bid for Jrue Holiday, but Portland ultimately accepted an offer from the Boston Celtics”

Joe Cronin, the GM of the Trail Blazers, has made it clear that he's not interested in trading his players to the Miami Heat, with no desire to engage in any potential deals with them. I am curious what offer they sent the Heat. But Heat had a terrible offseason after losing key players and losing key trade targets in Dame and Jrue Holiday who could have helped them.
