‘It’s way more checkers than it is chess’: Tom Brady further explained his ‘mediocrity’ comment about today’s NFL

https://www.boston.com/sports/new-england-patriots/2023/11/27/tom-brady-nfl-mediocrity-comment-quarterbacks-read-defenses-line-of-scrimmage-check/

"When Tom Brady said that there’s “a lot of mediocrity” in today’s NFL, some were confused and debated his point.

The Patriots icon further explained what he meant in the latest episode of his “Let’s Go!” podcast, focusing more on the inability of quarterbacks to read defenses and check out of plays at the line of scrimmage. As Brady was discussing how well of a game the Eagles’ overtime win over the Bills was, Jim Gray (one of Brady’s co-hosts) asked him why we don’t see as many games as intense or as well-played as that one, calling back to Brady’s “mediocrity” comment.

“I think the point is, you want to see the game continue to grow and evolve,” Brady said. “That means better coaching, better quarterback play, and better defensive playcalling. I think a big difference too is the lack of time that coaches have with players, coaches have together in the building, people don’t understand the full picture a lot of the time.”

As Brady said that players at most positions only need to know how to do a few things well, he explained that quarterbacks “need to know what everyone is doing.” But he doesn’t think quarterbacks in the league now necessarily know as much as they should, placing some of the blame on coaches because they’re trying to “control the game from the sideline.”

“When you try to control the game from the sideline, you don’t have the answer for everything that’s happening on the field,” Brady said. “Ultimately, as a quarterback, I had all the things at my disposal to get us into a good play. … I had the ability to change the play to get us to a play that I thought would be more successful.

“I just don’t see as much of that in the NFL,” Brady added. “There’s a lot less time that people are spending on it. That’s just the reality. When I started, there was a lot more time we spent on it. Over those years, I developed a lot of those tools in my arsenal to get us into the best play.”

Brady said that his ability to check out of bad plays at the line of scrimmage helped him win Super Bowls and made other quarterbacks, such as Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Philip Rivers, great. Now, he thinks that only Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, and maybe a couple of other quarterbacks have the ability to check plays at the line of scrimmage.

Brady laid blame on the constant pressures of getting things right in the league for the lack of quarterbacks in the league today who are able to check out of plays at the line scrimmage, saying “in an effort to get it right, people are actually getting it more wrong.” As he thinks it’s particularly affecting young quarterbacks, he recalled that being able to spend time with the Patriots’ coaching staff during the offseason helped him check out of a play that led to an overtime win over the Chargers in his third career start.

“We were talking about how they were going to max blitz us,” Brady said. “We said, ‘OK, if they max blitz us and they get us in that look, we’ve got to check the protection to a seven-man protection, and let’s get the receiver a shot down the field.’ [They said that] to a second-year quarterback!

“I was in the system my whole first year. I was being taught by Bill Belichick and Charlie Weis. We had quarterbacks school and the offseason program. We get into overtime after going the full 60 minutes and I recognized they called this all-out blitz. I said, ‘[Expletive] this, I’m changing it.’ I changed the protection, I threw a deep ball to David Patten, pass interference and we got a 50-yard gain. We win the game on a field goal in overtime.”

Instead of seeing quarterbacks doing what he did at the line of scrimmage throughout his whole career, Brady believes there are too many quarterbacks and teams being “reactive” and trying to fix problems after the snap.

“The more you can be decisive as a quarterback, the better outcomes you’re going to have, the better your process is going to be,” Brady said. “You want to be really decisive as a quarterback. You want to be really sure of what you’re doing. But you need to be sure of the gameplan, the protections, who’s responsible for who if they blitz, and where all of the receivers are going. All of that takes time. We’ve got to allow these guys time to develop.

“The pro game is reflecting what the college game is as opposed to the college game reflecting what the pro game is,” Brady added. “We’re asking pro players to play college football. That’s the biggest difference I see. It’s way more checkers than it is chess. I tried to play chess. I wanted to have three moves ahead of you at all times.”

Jordan Poole is currently -37.7 On-Off per 100 possessions which is significantly worse than any other Wizard this season

2nd worst on-off for the wizards is Mike Muscala at -25.3, but he has only played 64 minutes so far. The next worst is Tyus Jones at -23.5 with 381 minutes played, so Poole is -14.2 worse per 100 possessions than the next worst player getting starter minutes on his team. Has there ever been a player more detrimental towards winning than JP has been this season? I've legitimately never seen a comparably nightmarish on-off for a starter on any team in any season. Not a single player on any of the process 6ers rosters came close to half as poor of an on-off.

[OC] This is the Giants second worst season in their 99-year history as measured by point differential per game (-14.8 in 2023). This chart shows their timeline since 1925.

I don't know if you all have noticed, but this 2023 Giants team sucks. As an analyst, the eye test isn't enough for me. I need data, so I got it. And the data confirms that they suck...maybe even worse than the eye test. The Giants -14.8 point differential per game is second worst only to the 1-12-1 1966 Giants who had a per game point differential of -17.0. That 1966 team put up 41 points on offense against Washington in a game and still lost. They lost because they gave up 72.

Below you can see each year's point differential per game for the Giants with a few annotations. This image really puts into perspective just how bad 2023 has been so far.

C.J. Stroud is currently the NFL's leading passer in passing yards/game, on pace for just under 5000 (Sam Howell is the leader in total yards)

Stroud is averaging 291.8 yards a game which puts him just in front of Cousins (291.4) and Tua (289.9).

This pace would put him at 4961 yards for the season which would shatter Luck's record of 4374 (273 yards a game)--in fact at Stroud's pace he'd break it after 15 games.

Plus Stroud has a rating of 101, while Luck finished at 76.5.

Think the NFL referees might be influencing more games this year? You might be right.

In this article, we are going to look into the influence referees and penalties have on a typical NFL game and season.  First, all the penalty data comes from nflpenalties.com.  If you would like to reveiw any of the data here, or data going back 10 years, you can do so on their site.

Let's break this article down into 2 parts:

  • What influence do penalties have on the game?
  • What penalties are being called this season in comparison to previous seasons?

If you would like to read more about the penalty research issues & fixes, the full article is posted here:

NFL 2023 - Referees & Penalties Midseason Report

NFL 2023 Penalties by team

What influence do penalties have on an NFL Game?

First we should try to use the data to determine the amount penalties influence the outcome of NFL games.  To do that we are going to look at two charts:

  • Win % by Penalty Calls Differential
  • Win % by Penalty Yardage Differential

Let's start with Win % based on the difference of total penalties called against each team.  In the chart below you will see the penalty differnces , amount of  times a difference occured, team records, & Win %.

Win % by Penalty Amount Difference

Look at the range from 8 Fewer to 8 More in the win % column.  You will see almost a direct relationship between penalty difference and Win %.  The less penalties called against a team, the higher its chances of winning.  Outside the 8 Fewer to 8  More range we get into smaller sample sizes, so we are going to see more chaos in the records & Win % numbers

How about the relationship between Penalty Yardage and Win %, will we see the same thing there?

We have many small ranges in this chart so we are going to see a bit of chaos, but again if you look from 60-64 Fewer to 60-64 More range, you will again see a strong correlation between Win % and penalty yardage differential.

Win % by Penalty Yardage Difference

Therefore, the amount penalties called against a team, and/or the more penalty yardage called against a team relative its opponent, can swing Win % about 10% in either direction.   Thus this +/- 10% influence is about the influence referees can have on any single game, assuming they dont go completely flag crazy against one team.

What penalties are being called this season in comparison to previous seasons?

The following chart will show NFL Penalties over the past 5 years broken down by quarter, offense, defense, ST, amount of penalties and penalty yardage.  As you can see, if we project out the 2023 penalties, we are headed for the most penalties called in a season since 2019, and the most penalties called on the defense since 2020.  So it is fair to say, based on the projections, that referees are having more of an influence in 2023 than they have had since at least 2020.

NFL Penalties 2019 - 2023

If they are calling more penalties, what kind of penalties are the calling more of & when are they calling them?

This is the sticky wicket.  Different penalties have different punishments.  All are punished by yardage, but some grant automatic first downs.  However,  automatic 1st down penalties are the drive changers.  When they are taking place late in a game, it is going to appear as though, and in fact it actually may be, a game that is unduly influenced by penalties.

Look a the amount of penalties called in the 4th quarter thus far in 2023(445).  This projects out to about 900 4th quarter penalties in 2023, which again would be the most in the 4th quarter since 2019.

The real damning information comes in form of the following charts. The first is Automatic First Down Passing Penalties FOR each team.  In this chart the team listed is the beneficiary of an automatic 1st down penalty via the 4 main types of defensive passing penalties: Defensive Holding, Defensive Pass Interference, Illegal Contact, & Roughing the Passer.

As we can see, Tennessee has benefitted the most and Chicago has benefitted the least.  And there is a large difference between teams that benefitted most vs teams that have benefitted least.

Automatic 1st Down Penalties FOR

Here is the same chart but now we are looking at automatic 1st penalties AGAINST each team

Automatic 1st Down Penalties Against

Below is a chart showing NET automatic 1st down penalties by team(FOR - AGAINST).  It is sorted from team most punished to most helped.  Since all these penalties come with auto 1st down, the Total column shows the amount of free 1st downs a team has given away(negative#) or gained(positive #).

NFL 2023 NET automatic first down penalties

Now I am simply going to repost one chart with 2022 and extrapolated 2023 data. This should allow us to see changes in amount/type of calls between 2022 & 2023.

Automatic First Down Penalty Calls 2022 vs 2023

So in 2022, there were 610 of these types of penalties called against the defense for a total of 6529 yards.

In 2023, there are projected to be 695 types of these penalties called for a total of 7348 yards.

The changes:

  • Total calls - up from 2.24 calls to 2.56 calls, an increase of 13.95%
  • Defensive Holding calls - Down 10.87%
  • Defensive Pass Interfence calls - Up 27.98%
  • Illegal Contact calls - Up 26.30%
  • Roughing the Passer calls - Up 27.82%

So while one of the 4 calls is showing a decrease of just under 11%, it is the least damaging penalty(along with Illegal Contact) among the four.  Meanwhile, the most damaging types of calls, Pass Interference & Roughing the Passer are both up nearly 28%(as is illegal contact).  Essentially all the referees have done is changed a few of the defensive holding calls into illegal contact calls.  While at the same time throwing a fairly massive increase of supremely damaging defensive penalties.

And if we simply combine this information, with the information about 4th quarter penalties being up, it means the referees are throwing more of the most damaging types of defensive passing penalties in 2023 than they have since at least 2020.  By doing this they are going to put their influence on games at the very edges of that +/- 10%, as opposed to having less influence over outcomes this year.

Enjoy your football Sunday & best of luck to your team. They may need it.

Giannis getting ejected is the softest ejection I've seen since Tim Duncan got ejected for laughing on the bench.

It's almost as if the Zebras just wanna ruin the fun. Imagine if this was the first time a kid was able to see Giannis in person? All that time, money, and effort to see your favorite player just for them to get the boot.

To eject Giannis over that, but a few days ago Draymond Green is allowed to run and yell at refs for 45 seconds and gets no tech for it is just a gross display of abusive power.

Tonights game pits the 1-7 Panthers against the 2-7 Bears. I for one am incredibly excited because I believe TNF is about watching bad football.

My favorite TNF game of all time was the WK 14 2013 game pitting an awful Texans squad against my own awful Jaguars. Jaguars would go on to win an incredibly ugly and penalty filled (22 of them) 27-20 with Matt Schaub, Case Keenum, Chad Henne, and MJD putting on a show for a national audience that probably went to bad that night with the same feeling as you would have after going minor league hockey game.

What are some other wonderfully awful TNF Matchups that we can remember?

NFL Week 10 Predictions Thread (2023 Season)

We're on the backend of the season, /r/NFL! We have another game in Germany this week and it looks like it'll be a bargain bin game compared to last week's. The byes are fours teams this week, meaning two less games to watch. I had a great Week 9, going 12-2 and bringing me to 91-45 on the season. How did everyone else do? We only have two division games this week with four inter-conference and eight cross-conference games lined up. Let's get to it!

Bears over Panthers We're starting the week off on an absolute clunker. Young, the running game, receiving corps and O-line have all been limited or inconsistent for Carolina. Whether it's Bagent or Fields, the Bears can go after the Panthers defense well through the rushing attack and a motivated Moore in the passing game.
Colts over Patriots Minshew is taking hits in the passing game, but he's been helped out by Taylor and Moss running every week while the defense gets better. Jones has been more competent with more diverse weapons and the running game is improving, but he's still missing throws and making a few key mistakes.
Bengals over Texans Stroud is red-hot as a former Ohio State QB. Burrow is also sizzling as a former Ohio State QB. Stroud and the offense hasn't been the same on the road and Cincy has a tough pass defense with its strong CBs and bookend pressure. Burrow picks apart Houston's pass defense inside out.
Saints over Vikings This will be a close one; coinflip. The Saints' offense is finally starting to gel, with some hiccups last week, but they got some big plays from Taysom as well as five turnovers from Bagent to get the win. Dobbs brings the support the Vikings need after losing Cousins, but I think the NOLA defense pressures him enough to make winning this matchup just out of reach.
Steelers over Packers Steelers' defense will be primed to jump on a limited Packers offense with Love still fighting through it. Watt will be ready to tear into Green Bay's O-line and Pittsburgh's run blocking should keep both Harris and Warren hot. Pickett won't need QB heroics here.
Buccaneers over Titans Another coinflip game. If Levis can play like he did against Atlanta, the Titans have a good shot in this one. But this Bucs defense has been legit for most of the season. Baker also has the receivers to give the Titans' corners trouble.
49ers over Jaguars Given that San Fran has to go cross-country on this one, I'm calling this my "upset". Purdy should be sharper from the bye with better weapons around him. Look for the Niners' pass rush to rev up with more help and do enough for Purdy to outduel Lawrence on the road.
Ravens over Browns Probably a low-scoring divisional matchup given these two teams' great defenses. Garrett and crew tend to play much better defense at home; not the case this week. Baltimore brings a nasty pass rush and secondary. Watson still isn't playing well and he'll make too many mistakes under pressure.
Cardinals over Falcons Bird battle. Murray should be back this week. Heinicke and the Falcons offense continues to lose any rushing or passing identity. If Murray plays, the Falcons' defense has proved the past two weeks it doesn't respond well to QB curveballs, either with athleticism or a big arm.
Lions over Chargers The Lions will have their offense at full strength after a bye around Goff and St. Brown. The defense will chase Herbert as L.A. gets too one-dimensional with limited weapons. The Chargers' pass rush will be held in check while St. Brown goes off to lead a big scoring charge.
Cowboys over Giants The Giants have lost Jones and Taylor, leaving them with DeVito and Barkley. That doesn't feel good against Dak and a defense that beat them up 40-0 in the first meeting in Week 1. Dallas will take out its disappointment at Philly by ripping into another, much weaker NFC East rival.
Seahawks over Commanders Commanders go from Washington D.C. to Washington state, hoping to keep playing well on the road with Howell. Seattle is coming back from getting blasted in Baltimore and won't mind a get-well game. Smith plays much better, while Howell gets rattled a few too many times.
Raiders over Jets Jets are coming off a short week to play another AFC West opponent. The Raiders are playing more inspired defense with a tough running game at home under interim coach Pierce, having just ripped into a much worse New York team. The Raiders can hang in there with a run-heavy, physical approach.
Bills over Broncos Ungulate battle. Wilson is playing well and at 3-5, the Broncos were inspired enough to think their offense can put them back in the playoff picture. Denver does have confidence with the defense playing well and just having dusted K.C. before the bye. But Buffalo is ready to bump off a lesser team at home after losing to New England and Cincy.

Byes: Chiefs, Rams, Dolphins, Eagles

Those are my predictions, let's hear yours. Keep it civil and fun. Best of luck!

[Vasquez] The Jets have not had a TD drive of longer than one play since the KC game. All three of their TDs since were one-play drives from Breece Hall (72-yard run vs Broncos, 50-yard pass vs. Giants and the 8-yard run where the Eagles seemed to let him score.)

[Elhassan] I think the Knicks are a team that’s engaged in a ‘civil war.’ That war is between the guys who know how to play and the ones that don’t.

I think the Knicks are a team that’s engaged in a ‘civil war.’ That war is between the guys who know how to play and the ones that don’t.

On one side you got Brunson and the Villanova guys, you got Grimes, Hartenstein, Robinson…

On the other hand of the ledger you got Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley… guys that are just playing ‘impulse basketball.’ You can get through a regular season on impulse basketball, you can’t get anywhere in the playoffs on impulse basketball.

Edit: fixed a quote in the 2nd paragraph (added Villanova guys)

Which is the best coached division in the league?

No wrong answers here, it's all a matter of opinion. I'm curious which division you think has the best, most well-rounded coaching staff that elevate them above the rest of the league. I'm not necessarily asking which division has the best overall record (AFC North), unless you view that as a decisive metric in answering this question. You can consider tangible and intangible factors alike - just want to hear a diversity of opinions on why you think one division or another is the best coached overall

NFL Week 9 Predictions Thread (2023 Season)

Happy All Saints Day, /r/NFL! I hope everyone had an awesome and safe Halloween with tons of candy. We're into Turkey season now, with the temps getting cooler, fall in full effect, and we're starting the back end of the season. We have a game in Germany this week and it looks like it'll be a good one. The byes are back as well with fours teams off this week, meaning two less games to watch. I had a great Week 8, going 14-2 and bringing me to 79-43 on the season. How did everyone else do? We only have one division game this week with eight inter-conference and six cross-conference games lined up. With the trade deadline over and some shake-ups with certain teams happening, some picks may change based on that. Let's get to it!

Winner Loser Comments
Steelers over Titans With Tannehill out, Levis threw four TDs in Week 8 in a great debut that included three scores for Hopkins. Pittsburgh is 2-2 in home games this season, and Pickett might be out on a short week. That means Trubisky is probably starting. Take the under on a coinflip game.
Chiefs over Dolphins Tua and Mahomes rank first and third, respectively, in passing yards. The Phins have an opportunity to score a major step toward home-field advantage in the AFC with a win here. I just don't see the Chiefs losing back-to-back games. It took Mahomes being sick and pumped full of IVs to lose his first Broncos matchup.
Falcons over Vikings Battle of the backup QBs. Hall replaced Cousins, out for the season with a torn Achilles. Heinicke replaced Ridder in Week 8. The Falcons are 3-1 at home, but they might want to keep tabs on Addison who has five TD catches in his last four games. Both teams turn the ball over too much, so we'll stick with the home team.
Browns over Cardinals Murray is closer to a return for the Cards, who are on a five-game losing streak. They now have to face a tough Cleveland defense. Tune will start if Murray can't go, and Watson remains a week-to-week decision for the Browns. Cleveland is 3-1 at home, but they are 0-2 as a favorite this season. Could be a good, low-scoring garbage game.
Packers over Rams The Packers have been a miserable first-half team, and could lose their third straight at Lambeau. Rypien replaced Stafford for the Rams in Week 8 and they are 2-1 on the road. but I think the Packers break a four-game losing streak with a late TD drive from Love. This game may be trashy, but Green Bay breaks the curse at home this week.
Commanders over Patriots The Patriots rank 31st in the NFL in scoring at 14.8 PPG; a show of just how bad the offense has been this season. Washington has been in a free fall, but Howell's protection was much better in the loss to Philly. The Commanders have allowed 30+ PPG five times, but they are 2-2 on the road. Could be another nasty matchup, being either the lowest scoring game or the highest... take your pick.
Saints over Bears Happy 57th Birthday, Saints! Last week we finally saw what this offense could do, coupled with a defense that has been great all season. With Chicago ranking 30th in pass defense, look for Carr to continue his 50+yard deep ball relationship with Shaheed.
Ravens over Seahawks Bird battle. This is the fourth meeting between Carroll and Harbaugh, and Carroll has a 2-1 advantage. Seattle is 2-1 on the road this season, and Smith has a 93.7 rating with three TDs and two INTs in those games. Jackson has a 71.4% completion percentage with 5 TDs and one INT in a three-game win streak. The Ravens win, but this game will be tight
Texans over Buccaneers Houston is home to face the 6th-ranked Bucs scoring defense. Not an easy challenge for a rookie QB, but Stroud has looked up to the task so far. Houston is also ranked 6th on defense, with 18.3 PPG. This may come down to how much the QB turns over the ball, and Baker is not as good as Stroud.
Colts over Panthers Carolina finally won a game and now every team has won at least one game this season. Indy is stuck in a three-game skid, allowing an average of 38 PPG. The Panthers are at home and Reich is up against his old team, but Carolina allows 139.4 rushing YPG. This could be the Taylor breakout game for this season.
Giants over Raiders Vegas has so much drama going on with them right now. The HC and GM have been fired, Adams hates it there, and they're coming off a short week. Jones is expected to be back this week to hopefully bolster an offense that is last in the league in scoring (11.9 PPG). This will be a low-scoring game, but the team with a HC will win this one, although I'm certain Raiders fans will vehemently disagree with me.
Eagles over Cowboys The only division game this week, and it's a good one. These teams split in the regular season last year. Philly could take a commanding lead in the division here. Dallas has limited Hurts to an average of 31 rushing yards in his last two starts vs Dallas, but the Cowboys have been an average road team at 2-2 this season. The Eagles haven't lost at home, and they are 4-0 when favored by less than six points.
Bengals over Bills Another great matchup. These two teams have emerged as AFC rivals in recent seasons. Burrow has a 77.9% completion percentage, 8 TDs and two INTs in his last three games. Chase has 31 catches for 372 yards and four TDs in that same stretch. How will Allen and Diggs (with five 100-yard games) counter in this one? Cincy is 15-6 the last three seasons with Burrow. It'll be a shootout with the safe bet being the home team.
Chargers over Jets The Jets continue to find ways to win games. They have one of the best pass defenses in the league, forcing 13 turnovers in their first seven games, the 4th-best in the NFL. But on offense they're averaging just 18 PPG. With a Chargers defense that has been pretty stout against the run and is also consistently forcing turnovers, Herbert will have another follow-on great game from last week.

Byes: Broncos, Lions, 49ers, Jaguars

Those are my predictions, let's hear yours. Keep it civil and fun. Best of luck!
