[Draper] Unless CNN suddenly has a secret NBA source, I have a guess at how this happened. An NBA TV scriptwriter pre-wrote a news item about Milwaukee hiring Doc Rivers, assuming someone else would break it first and CNN would then confirm it. Somehow this gets read on-air at NBA TV an hour ago

Source thread by NYTSports' investigative reporter Kevin Draper

Clip of the CNN Sports report that was being reported by Bleacher Report shown in the tweet

Unless CNN suddenly has a secret NBA source nobody else has, I have a guess at how this happened. It is important to know that Warner Bros. Discovery owns CNN and TNT, and operates NBA TV.

An NBA TV scriptwriter pre-wrote a news item about Milwaukee hiring Doc Rivers, assuming someone else would break it first and CNN would then confirm it. Somehow, this gets read on-air at NBA TV an hour ago.

This then floats over the transom to TNT and Inside the NBA, where producers don’t apply enough skepticism — who at CNN confirmed this? where is the news story or tweet? why doesn’t woj have this? — and repeat it and put it on air.

CNN is a serious news organization that breaks things far more important than NBA coaching news. They have a process. None of that process includes no sourcing info, letting news first break on NBA TV and not writing an article about it.

(A WBD Sports spokesman has not responded to my questions about what is going on with this report)

Did O.J. Simpson have the best career peak of any RB?

So I was looking at the highest YPG leaders in a single season, and here's the list:

  1. OJ Simpson: 143.1 (1973)

  2. Jim Brown: 133.1 (1963)

  3. Walter Payton: 132.3 (1977)

  4. Eric Dickerson: 131.6 (1984)

  5. Adrian Peterson: 131.1 (2012)

  6. OJ Simpson: 129.8 (1975)

  7. Jamal Lewis: 129.1 (2003)

  8. Earl Campbell: 128.9 (1980)

  9. Barry Sanders: 128.3 (1997)

  10. Jim Brown: 127.3 (1958)

There isn't even close to a bigger gap on the top 10 list than the one from #1 to #2.

Other interesting notes:

OJ and Jim Brown were the only two to make this list twice, however Barry Sanders is also tied for 15th all time in the 1994 season (117.7).

Jim Brown has the most (4) appearances on the top 50 all time list

Only 6 RBs have had a season in the top 50 of YPG since the year 2010, and they are:

Adrian Peterson, 131.1 in 2012 (#5)

Derrick Henry, 126.7 in 2020 (#11)

Demarco Murray, 115.3 in 2014 (#23)

Dalvin Cook, 111.2 in 2020 (#30)

Ezekiel Elliot, 108.7 in 2016 (#34)

Johnathan Taylor, 106.6 in 2021 (#45). This is the most recent to crack the top 50 in YPG

Regardless of the result, the winner of the BAL-HOU game will break a 10+ Year Conf. Championship Appearance Drought.

The Baltimore Ravens haven’t appeared in an AFC Championship game since their Super Bowl run in 2012, 11 seasons ago.

The Houston Texans have never appeared in an AFC Championship game, and are currently playing their 22nd Season as a franchise.

The Ravens are in the midst of their longest wait as a franchise, (considering it’s only 11 years is frankly impressive, all things considered)

But Houston? Houston has been hurting for a droughtbreaker.

While the Lions and Commanders 32-year droughts are longer in terms of a single franchise droughts, Houston the city has been waiting since the 1979 season, when the Oilers made it.

A massive 44-year season drought, by far the longest for any active NFL city

Joel Embiid is averaging 11.36 FTA per 36 minutes for his career. The next highest is Shaq with 9.66 FTA per 36. He is shooting 16% more FTA per game than the second place. The difference between Embiid and the second place is the same as the difference between second and 22nd place.

The gap between him and the second place is enormous. What does Embiid do differently that others couldn't consistently replicate, even in today's era? Yes, per 36 is not the right tool to compare different players and across different eras, and he is still playing in his prime, so his free throw attempts are expected to drop like other greats. But even in Shaq's prime, he was averaging less; shaq averaged 10.4 during his Lakers days with Hack-a-Shaq where players were trying to foul him.

Kevin Love has proven to be an invaluable off-the-bench piece for the Heat this season. He has the 4th most points (10.1PPG) and 3rd most rebounds (6.7RPG) of any player playing under 20 minutes per game this season.

Most PPG in Under 20MPG:

  • Alec Burks: 12.2PPG (19.8MPG)
  • Mortitz Wagner: 11.5PPG (19.5MPG)
  • Marvin Bagley III: 10.2PPG (18.4MPG)
  • Kevin Love: 10.1PPG (19.1MPG)
  • Dante Exum: 9.3PPG (19.5MPG)

Most RPG in Under 20MPG:

  • Andre Drummond: 8.5RPG (16.0MPG)
  • Day'Ron Sharpe: 7.0RPG (16.0MPG)
  • Kevin Love: 6.7RPG (19.1MPG)

Not bad for the 35-year old, 15-year NBA vet!

Pascal Siakam has told teams he will not give a commitment to re-sign with any team that is not the Raptors. If he gets traded to the Pacers, he's not going to say "Yeah, I'll re-sign in the summer." He will not give a verbal commitment whatsoever — let alone an extension — with the Pacers, the Hawks, the Kings, the Warriors or any other team that trades for him. He wants to test out free agency.

A year after being traded for pick #32, Chase Claypool finishes the regular season with 8 catches for 77 yards and 1 TD

The Bears went 0-3 in games where he saw the field and 7-7 through the rest of the season. The Dolphins went 4-5 in games with Claypool participating and 7-1 through the rest of the season.

Cursed player?

Shaq has 3 teams retiring his jersey. Is that the most?

Most superstars worthy of jersey retirement probably only has 1 or 2 stints worthy of retirement. LBJ will most likely get 3. Who else in history has more?
