Biggest Draft Busts this Century (10/32): The Denver Broncos select Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis, with the 26th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Reasons for picking Paxton Lynch- Jarvis Moss (2007) was a strong contender as well, but Paxton Lynch’s failure to make any kind of impact in the NFL wins him this title. At Memphis, he’d been arguably the best QB in school history, holding records for the most touchdowns in a single season (35), most yards of total offense in a season (4,015) and most passing yards in a game (447), while finishing second in a number of other all-time categories. He also tied an FBS record by throwing 7 touchdowns in a single half during a 63-0 win over SMU in 2015. The defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos were intrigued by his cannon arm and 6’7 frame and decided to trade up to the #26 spot to select Lynch, giving the Seahawks their #32 pick and a third-round pick in return.

However, Lynch struggled to adapt to Gary Kubiak’s offense. He would lose the starting QB competition to Trevor Siemian, who was a 2015 7th round draft pick. Lynch would play in just 3 games as a rookie, one in which he was sacked 6 times by the Falcons when starting in place for an injured Siemian. In 2017, he would again fail to beat out Siemian for the starting QB spot in after suffering a shoulder injury during the preseason. Returning in November, Lynch gave the Raiders defense their first interception of the season before leaving with an ankle injury and not returning again until Week 17. In 2 seasons with the Broncos, he started just 4 games and finished with 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions In the 2018 offseason, the Broncos would sign Case Keenum to play QB, and Lynch would be demoted several spots in the depth chart before being cut in September 2018. He later signed with the Seahawks and Steelers, but did not appear in any games and was released by the Steelers in September 2020.
