Donovan Mitchell on the playoffs without LeBron, Steph: "I see the tweets about the new blood in the playoffs. The Clippers have never won a championship. We've never won. Phoenix has never won. Look at how competitive these games are, I think that's what makes this playoffs so intense, so exciting"

This year will mark the first time since 2006 that none of LeBron, Curry or Kobe Bryant will be in the Finals. None of the final eight teams this year has won an NBA title since 1983, when the “Fo, fo, fo” 76ers of Moses Malone did so. While the Nets have made mincemeat of the Bucks in the first two games of their conference semifinal series, there is still a chance we could have, say, a Milwaukee-Utah or Atlanta-Denver Finals, as opposed to Brooklyn-Clippers or Philly-Clippers.

Would you watch that?

Are you going to be interested in a potential championship series bereft of easily recognizable storylines?

Both on and off the court, the field is pretty wide open.

“I have social media, so I’m always on it,” Utah’s Donovan Mitchell said late Tuesday, via Zoom, after scoring 32 of his 45 points in the second half to lead his team’s come-from-behind win over the Clippers in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series.

“I see it, I’m not going to lie,” Mitchell continued. “I see the tweets (about the new blood in these playoffs). We all do. The best thing about it is, that’s what makes these games so competitive. The Clippers – correct me if I’m wrong – have never won a championship. We’ve never won one. Phoenix has never won one. You look at how competitive these games are, I think that’s what makes this playoffs so intense, so exciting
