This chart shows the total yards for each year's passing yard leader, but the focus is on the record, which is why I'm avoiding the clutter of using data labels for each and every season. At the bottom of the chart, I include the context of how many games were played each year (14-game era, 16-game era, etc).
A few notes:
- "Slingin" Sammy Baugh passed for 2,938 yards in 1947. He held the record for 13 years which is the 2nd longest time period to hold the record.
- Johnny Unitas broke Baugh's record in 1960, only to hold it for one year when Sonny Jurgensen broke in a year later by over 700 yards in the first season of the 14-game era.
- First 3,000 yard passer - Sonny Jurgensen
- First 4,000 yard passer - Joe Namath
- Two years into the 16-game era, a Fouts-alanche started with Dan Fouts breaking the record three seasons in a row from 1979-81
- First 5,000 yard passer - Dan Marino
- Marino would break by Dan Fouts' record and hold the record for 27 f**king years!
- Payton Manning broke Drew Bees' record by ONE YARD.
- Derek Carr is on pace for 5,276 yards which would be the third-highest season ever.
