Hot take, I know. But no one who is talking about the call seems to even know the text of the rule. The blindside block rule was instated in 2019 as part of the player health and safety rules changes and the text of the rule as written in the rulebook says:
- The blindside block is eliminated, expanding protection of defenseless players. It is now prohibited for a blocker to initiate forcible contact with his head, shoulder or forearm when his path is toward or parallel to his own end line.

Now let's examine the play: https://twitter.com/sharpfootball/status/1466610781584244737?s=21
The saints player Griffin is clearly moving on a path that is towards his own end line. He clearly initiates contact with his head. In fact it is clearly a head to head hit against Kearse. Since the two criteria for an illegal blindside block have been met, then the flag should have been thrown.
If you want to argue that this shouldn't be a rule, or should be called something else, or there should be an exception for this situation, those are all different arguments. As the rule is written though, this was clearly a correct application.
