I don't think Payne has gotten enough credit for his leap in playmaking, as this recent stretch has made it pretty evident that he's not just a really good backup; he could be a starter on plenty of teams.
Of course, there is still a lot of drop off from CP3 to CP15. Payne doesn't give you the automatic mid-range scoring, his shot percentages at the rim are down this season now that opposing teams properly scout him, and while he has a good AST/TO ratio, that's different from manipulating offense possession by possession in the way that Paul does.
Still, nobody would have believed that he could be running a good offense like this 2 years ago. It's sensational.
