Hey everyone, hope you are all having a great Saturday. Just wanted your opinions on this matter. I made a post about this in r/NBA_Draft yesterday. I referenced this picture of Wembanyama standing next to 7'4 Zach Edey. If Edey is an official 7’4, it would appear that Wembanyama is 7’4 at the very least. This picture is also more than a year old and Wembanyama was only 17 at the time. It is very possible, and probably likely, that he grew at least half an inch. I've also seen a lot of posts casually calling him 7'4, with many even believing him to be 7'5.
At what point does his height start to become concerning? We all know that he is a generational talent and a player that you must take #1...but, the health and longevity of players over 7'2 isn't great. Extremely young, he doesn't turn 19 until next year, 7'5 or taller is very possible 2+ years from now. Do you believe he will be able to be a top 50 player in NBA history at such a height? The skill and talent will likely not be the issue.
I couldn't find a list of his injury history, but here's what I could dig up from the last 19 months or so:
In Dec 2020, he missed 8 weeks due to a fibula stress fracture.
In Nov 2021, he missed 3 weeks due to a small fracture of a finger. Many people have brought up how his long skinny fingers will cause him issues until he beefs up. u/Bauglir1 mentions it in this post, months before his injury.
In Dec 2021, he missed 8 weeks due to a right shoulder injury.
In June 2022, he was shut down for the season for what was described as a "muscle injury".
Some history here for such a young player, but you can't pass up on that potential and talent. At 7'4+, with a 7'9 wingspan (which will likely increase) and his unprecedented fluidity, he has the potential to be an absolute two way juggernaut, the likes of which we have never seen. If healthy, perennial all-star would seem like the floor for such a player. But is there such a thing as being "too tall"?
tl;dr: Many speculate Wembanyama to be at least 7'4. Do you believe that his growth is becoming concerning? Do you believe that it is possible for a player 7'4 or taller to handle the grueling NBA schedule and have a long and healthy career? If so, then the sky is truly the limit for Wembanyama.
Thanks and enjoy your weekend!
