Why is it that despite having one of the most dominant primes ever, and a relatively long prime at that, that Shaq only won 1 MVP?

Shaq was basically a superstar from the onset. He was putting up 29/13 and was All NBA in his 2nd season and continued to dominate like that until the mid 2000s. The man was 14x All NBA so he had a ton of longevity. And we all know prime Shaq is considered arguably the most dominant prime ever. So how did he only come away with 1 MVP during that time?
