If teams are forced to play the anthem against their will and players are forced to stand against their will, playing a performance by a Black veteran used as a protest of the hypocrisy of America both in Vietnam and towards civil rights activists is as close as we'd get to a compromise solution. BLM and players can use it as a springboard to keep the conversation about social justice in America going.
It's the anthem, so it meets the minimum standards of the NBA and the demands of fans who want the tradition upheld.
But surely many will consider that controversial version offensive, even though Jimi made no unpatriotic or disrespectful comments during the performance, just let his protest clearly be felt through the nature of the performance. If hearing that version every game becomes intolerable to some people, they are welcome to join in the call for an end to the pointless tradition.
