32 Teams/32 Days: Year Eleven, Call For Writers

Hello /r/NFL! I'm happy to be running the 32 Teams/32 Days Write-ups again this year. This is an annual event to celebrate the good bad and ugly of last year. In short, it's fan write-ups for how each NFL team's year turned out and where the writers see that team going in the future.

Here's a link to last year's

A previous manager for this list suggested the example of this post here, by the writer of the Chicago Bears. To use /u/skepticismissurvival’s description of this post, “This post has a little bit of everything - a detailed main body post for people just looking for a short read, and an extremely in depth post in the comments for fans that are very intrigued.”

Generally speaking I prioritize writers from last year unless that writer didn't do a great job.

If you want to sign up to write for your team, this is the thread to do so. I highly recommend accepting help in the event you get a writing spot. I highly recommend offering help in the event that you didn’t get a spot but wanted one.

All writers have access to /r/32Teams32Days. I will be asking that every head writer immediately create a text post there update it while you work. This is intended to solve formatting issues ahead of time and prevent me from being blindsided by never do their job. I can other writers who are helping your team to this group. Just ask me.

  • This is a lot of work. If you don’t think you can do a high quality job, don’t volunteer or wait and volunteer to assist the primary writer.

  • Some people are not going to like what you write. If you can’t take criticism, don’t sign up.

  • If you sign up and something comes up where you can no longer do the write up, please let me know as soon as possible. Shit happens. Don’t let this get in the way of your real life. However, if you tell me the night before your post is supposed to be up, I’ll probably be a bit annoyed. At the very least, just give me a chance to find someone to replace you.

  • No antagonistic language towards other teams. Do your best to write this with as closely to journalistic viewpoint as you can muster. While journalists will often show excitement for the team they cover, they'll rarely shout undeserved criticism towards opponents.

As I said earlier, the post will primarily consist of the same information.

  • 2022 Offseason (Free Agency, Draft)

  • Season review (week by week)

  • High points and low points

  • Team statistics

  • Roster review

  • Coaching staff review

  • Upcoming free agents from your team

  • Team needs (what they should do in free agency and the draft)

  • Advertise your team for fans to pick who they should choose. One of the mods suggested that you may the users may update the updated "pick a team" section. I can't guarantee that this won't be used it, but that's here the intent. Here's the current section: https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/wiki/new/pickateam

  • Anything else related to your team's season

You will have a lot of leniency with your post. You can add whatever you want to it as long as it relates to your team’s 2022 season. I would like you to create a hub link at the top of your main post so users can easily navigate back to the main hub (this post.)

Certain users in the past have requested Google Docs or pdf versions. If it's easy enough to provide these alternatives, I'm sure they'll be appreciated, but I'm not yet making it a requirement.

Steph and Ayesha Curry wrote a letter opposing development of a multi-family housing development in their town

Source: https://almanacnews.com/news/2023/01/27/steph-and-ayesha-curry-oppose-upzoning-of-atherton-property-near-their-home

(some emphasis mine)

Atherton residents Stephen and Ayesha Curry, the Golden State Warriors star and his entrepreneur wife, have weighed in on a site slated for multifamily housing development in the town's proposed state-mandated housing element, which is due to the state next week.

The town has opted to upzone a 1.5-acre lot at 23 Oakwood Blvd., where there is currently a single-family home. The property owner plans to develop up to 16 townhouses. The Currys sent a letter opposing the project, saying they had "major concerns in terms of both privacy and safety with three‐story townhomes looming directly behind us." They asked the town, at minimum, to build taller fencing and landscaping to protect views into their property.

"As Atherton residents ... we have been following along with the housing element updates with special interest in the 23 Oakwood property," they wrote in a Jan. 18 letter to the town. "We hesitate to add to the 'not in our backyard' (literally) rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note before today's meeting. Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home."

The family isn’t alone in its opposition to the project. Other neighbors have expressed concern about developing multifamily housing on the site in letters and public comments during town meetings.

Initially the town's growth plan had been to lean in on backyard accessory dwelling units, but town consultants, housing advocates and others made it clear that the state won't accept an element that doesn't include multifamily housing.

The couple noted that the town has already recognized that 23 Oakwood townhouses would not contribute to the very-low or low-income housing quotas required by the state, and they were pleased when it was previously removed from the housing element. Council member Rick DeGolia has said that it's not possible to build low-income housing in Atherton since land is worth about $8 million per acre.

"We kindly ask that the town adopts the new housing element without the inclusion of 23 Oakwood," the Currys wrote. "Should that not be sufficient for the state, we ask that the town commits to investing in considerably taller fencing and landscaping to block sight lines onto our family's property."

The plan is due to the state Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) on Tuesday, Jan. 31, and the Atherton City Council will vote on the final version of the plan at a Jan. 31 meeting at 2 p.m.

A couple additional notes of interest:

With Herbert and Burrow about to sign massive contracts, Josh Allen’s cap number rising from $16M to $40M and Mahomes from $35M to $46M, which QB will struggle with less around them?

The AFC is absolutely stacked with QB’s. Trevor Lawrence showing he will not be underestimated with the Jaguars making the playoffs. Which of these QBs needs a lot of talent around them to succeed in your opinion? Is it Burrow? In college he had Ja’mar Chase, Justin Jefferson and CEH. If not Burrow is it Herbert? He’s had Kennan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler? Which QB will be exposed without great talent around them?

r/NFL Top 100 of the 2022 Season - Call for Rankers

Greetings r/NFL!

The best Top 100 list out there is starting up again this year and u/mattkud and I are honored to be your showrunners for a second year! A big shoutout to u/MikeTysonChicken, u/Mister_Jay_Peg, u/skepticismissurvival, and u/Staple_Overlaod for starting, improving, and maintaining this list process to make it what it is today. It’s been a full decade since our first r/NFL Top 100 list came out and we are super excited to renew this tradition of ranking the top 100 players of the previous regular season

In order to thoroughly complete this list, we need to start now. The 2022 NFL Regular Season is over, and now it’s time to get cracking! But before we get to making the list, we need to send out the signal and recruit new blood to help us rank.

The ranking process is a fun project we all take seriously, with fun being the most important word here. Our rankers work hard to put together the best list they can with all the data and film we can get to evaluate the best players in the league of the previous season. We have a ton of fun debating positional importance and how deep each position is and how playing time should affect things and so on and so forth. It’s an incredibly rewarding process that really challenges your assumptions on football knowledge and gets you thinking. You will absolutely disagree with your fellow rankers, and that’s OK.

This is a very challenging project to overtake. This year we saw 2196 players take the field, more than any other year, and trying to boil down the 100 best is no small feat. But also remember: this is supposed to be fun. We aren’t experts - nor do we try to be. We just try to be objective observers as fanatical fans of the game.

If you are interested and want to throw your hat into the ring, it’s pretty simple. Go to this link here, and fill out the short 4 question questionnaire. It’ll ask for your username, your team affiliation, a paragraph asking why we should pick you to rank, and a OPTIONAL request to submit any Original Content that you’ve made, here on reddit or on another platform. I will be clear here, OC is NOT a prerequisite to rank, don’t feel intimidated to apply if all you’ve got is reddit comment history.

Before you fill out the form and say you want in on this, you really need to know what you’re getting into. Please take a couple minutes to read this wall of text ahead to get an idea of the process, and feel free to ask either u/mattkud or myself, u/packmanwiscy, any questions you may have

  • Step 1: Recruiting rankers. That’s what we’re doing here. We’re looking for around 100 or so rankers, possibly even more. We have some returning rankers, but ideally we’re looking for 3 rankers per fanbase, which we do not currently have. To be considered, you should be someone who posts either here or in your own subreddit enough for us to at least see your post history and confirm that you are a good fan of that team. The karma count doesn’t matter, as long as your opinions aren’t completely off the deep end in relation to your team. Additionally, if there are things you do either here on reddit or some offsite thing like film reviews/breakdowns or statistical analysis, please share that with us! We’re just looking for good, active participants who are able to communicate their viewpoint and are receptive to others.

  • Step 2: Once we have a group of rankers, we’ll get to work. First, the rankers of their respective fanbase nominate the players on their team who they consider worthy of being considered for the list this year. This list usually gives us about 250-ish names to consider, and gives us a good way to narrow down the evaluation process for our rankers. The nomination process should take about a week

  • Step 3: The Tiers. Once this pool of players is created, we will create discussion threads for rankers to break players down into tiers within their positional groupings prior to creating a final Top 100 lit submission. Users will be directed to break players into tiers for the other rankers to evaluate: Top 25, Top 50, Top 100, Top 100-125. This is done to give everyone an idea of where a ranker feels a player should be ranked. Our positional breakdown is QB, RB, WR, TE, OT, OG, OC, Interior Defensive Lineman (IDL), EDGE rushers, Off-Ball Linebacker (LB), Safety, CB. If most users have a player in their Top 100 tier but someone has them Top 25 and someone else has them unranked, we can discuss that and see their viewpoint. This really helps rankers visualize where players should land on their list prior to filling out the whole thing and makes the final list making process a little more manageable knowing that you’ve already separated players into different tiers. This part of our schedule takes 1-2 months to complete, this is the real meat of the process because we want everyone to have a thorough discussion on each of the position groups

NOTE: You will need to participate in the large majority of these threads in order to fill out your final Top 100 list. There will be breaks to allow everyone to catch up on their tiers if they fall behind, but participation in positional tier listing is absolutely required. Inactive users will be periodically removed; if you don’t tier, you don’t get to submit a list.

  • Step 4: After discussions are complete, everyone will be asked to submit on their own a personal Top 125 list. We go to 125 to try and create a more representative average at the bottom of the list. If you have all your ducks in a row this should only take a half hour or so, or you can be like me and double and triple check everything and tinker for 2 days before submission. Either way you will be given enough time to complete your ranking sheet. We do ask you to keep positional importance in the back of your mind when making these lists.

NOTE: Rankers are submitted via individual Google Sheets and auto-compiled into a master list. There is a small crack team of former rankers that review the list and try to catch individual ranks that are 2 standard deviations out of the consensus, whether intentionally or accidentally. You won’t have to change it unless you want, we aren’t going to force groupthink on you or anything. We do note that that one high rank and one low rank will be removed from each player’s tally to calculate the average rank, just so one wild outlier doesn’t drastically affect a player’s rank

NOTE 2: These list will be made public. This can bring some unwanted heat in your direction and has in the past. I firmly believe that if you want to be a part of this public list, your opinion need to be known by the public. These ranks will not be kept anonymous. We ask you to remain civil in the comments section and if you can’t control yourself you will be removed from the process. I cannot control the mob, you cannot control the mob, but you can control your reaction to the mob, and you will be removed if you cannot control your reaction to the mob. You are expected to behave civilly and explain your thought process as politely as possible.

  • Step 5: Once all the rankings are in, we will combine them and create the list using the average rank. Unranked players will be designated with a rank of 140 to tabulate the average for all nominated players. Players ranked 101-125 overall will make the Honorable Mentions while the remaining 1-100 will be the ranked players.

  • Step 6: The list reveal and writeups. The list will be revealed 10 ranks at a time, twice a week over a span of about 5 weeks. Accompanying each player is a writeup, written by the rankers, outlining why the player is ranked where they are. Each ranker will be expected to contribute to the player writeups. Think of it as the “show your work” portion of the ranking process. The nitty gritty of ranking might be over by this point, but the writeups are an integral part of the process, we wanna give your favorite NFL players some love! The Top 10 will be divided into two parts, a 10-6 and a 5-1 post, with lengthier writeups. Then we do a recap post and then we’re officially done with this year. By then it’ll be mid-July and we’ll be worrying about training camp.

Still there? I know this looks like a lot of effort, because it is! It’s also worth your time. Personally I’ve learned a ton about the NFL in the four years I’ve participated. You get to meet other hardcore football enthusiasts and learn about players who you might only know in passing. Again, nobody expects you to be an expert, just be open and honest and have some fun along the way

If you are still interested, please sign up. If you don’t want to participate but know someone who you think would be great? Let them know! We are always looking for valuable contributors

https://twitter.com/ProFootballTalk/status/1619157064139563009

[Analysis] There is a 0.000003% chance that the discrepancy between Jaren Jackson Jr.'s Blocks/Steals is solely due to random distribution

There is much debate right now about JJJ and the Memphis Grizzlies' scorekeeper boosting his stats. I am not skilled enough in the rulebook to analyze each play individually, but I can look at the numbers to see what the likelihood would be.

Fortunately, we can use a Normal Distribution (or Gaussian Distribution) to do this analysis. Here is a study showing Normal Distribution in NBA games..

A normal distribution lets us analyze the "bell curve" of a statistic. Once we know the mean (average) and standard deviation (how spread out it is), we can determine the probability falling in a certain range. As a rule of thumb, 68% of values will fall within 1 standard deviation of the mean, 95% within 2 standard deviations, and 99.7% within 3 standard deviations. Here is a link with more reading if anyone is curious.

So now onto the analysis. I downloaded the game logs from Basketball Reference, and split them up into home and away. I calculated the Mean and Standard Deviation for his home and road games, and used a Z-Test to compare the two. A Z-Test tells you the probability that a randomly generated sample (of the same size as the data) has a mean value greater than a specified number based on the original data set. Since the number of home and away games is essentially identical, this works out.

The results of the Z-Test show that there is only a 0.000003% chance that the difference between his road and home splits is due to random chance. This is 1 in 3 million chance. I am more likely to get struck by lightning than JJJ to have gotten these stats due to random chance.

Important:

It’s important to note that statistically significant doesn’t describe the cause behind it. It could be he’s playing much better at home, or he’s getting better scorekeeping. All it says is that “something is different here”

Edit: for those saying that you can’t do this analysis because home and road splits are different- see this comment from u/Fofodrip . The difference is 4.8 vs 4.7 blocks per game. It’s totally possible JJJ just plays better at home but thats not really the norm.

Quotes from Micheal Malone's post game conference here https://twitter.com/JoelRushNBA/status/1618455173445324803

Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo play each other twice during the regular season. Yet the NBA schedules their matchup tonight with Denver on a ridiculous New Orleans-Milwaukee back-to-back. No Jokic. No Murray. Two other starters from Denver rested as a result. A marquee regular season matchup is out the window.

Denver and Milwaukee's other matchup comes with the Bucks on the second night of the dreaded Utah-Denver back-to-back. The Bucks' regulars probably won't be playing in that one.

But other teams will pursue Conley too, meaning that the Jazz will likely hold out for the best possible offer until closer to the deadline. So L.A. must scour the rest of the league. League sources say the Clippers are also interested in Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet.

This was in relation to the Clippers being interested in Conley too.

[Stein] Word is the Suns are starting to assess their post-Paul future and have Charlotte’s Terry Rozier, New York’s Immanuel Quickley and Toronto’s Fred VanVleet as potential trade targets.

Chris Paul is back for Phoenix after missing seven games with a hip injury, but the 37-year-old has played in only 27 of the Suns' 48 games this season, having missed 14 games earlier due to a heel injury. Word is that those realities have prompted the Suns to start assessing their post-Paul future and thus identify Charlotte's Terry Rozier, New York's Immanuel Quickley and Toronto's Fred VanVleet as potential trade targets. The latest signals from the Knicks, as I reported on Jan. 14, indicate that Quickley will not be made available at this deadline. Rozier, though, is widely perceived as attainable given the Hornets' slide into Victor Wembanyama territory, while VanVleet's future with Canada's team remains unclear given the 21-27 Raptors' struggles and VanVleet's desire for a lucrative new contract in the offseason.

Sources said Doncic, who hasn't shown a desire to be involved in personnel matters in the past, has strongly indicated he wants the Mavs to upgrade before the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

Of course, that's easier said than done for a team that still owes the Knicks a pick to complete the Porzingis deal.

The Mavs are well aware of a modern NBA math problem: Unhappy stars who have only two guaranteed years remaining on their contracts have leverage if they're looking to leave. For reference, see Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans or James Harden and the Houston Rockets.

That doesn't necessarily mean Doncic will request a trade if the Mavs haven't put a contender-quality supporting cast in place by the summer of 2024. But the Mavs, like the Hawks with Young, surely don't want to fiddle around and find out.

Is it time the NFL distinguishes between “roughing the passer” 15 yard personal foul and “running into the passer” like we do with kickers?

I just thought about this. With NFL drives starting between the 25-30 usually, reams have to go 70 yards for a TD. A 15 yard roughing the passer penalty can give the offense over 20% of the drive on one ticky tacky play.

Since they are clearly calling RTP more and for very minor instances, it can have a major effect on the game. As we know with kickers, there is roughing vs running into. Is it time the NFL does the same with passers?

For Denver I would go with Justin Simmons. He's a premier safety in the league, tied for most interceptions this season while missing several games, and seems to be the closest thing we have to Mahomes kryptonite

2023 End of Season Fireside Chat

Hey everyone!

It's the end of the 2022 regular season and we are overdue for this. Before we get to everything, lets show some love to our new mods :

3 MILLION USERS!

For a sub that doesn't appear on r/all, hitting the 3 million mark is pretty damn good! According to Reddit, we were also the 9th most-engaged subreddit in the United States. (Engagement = posts and comments submitted).

As of writing this, we are already to 3.2 million users. Maybe 4 million by 2024?

Highlights Rule Update

We've updated the Highlight rule to allow for keeping actual video highlight posts over Twitter highlights:

Highlights must have non-editorialized descriptions of the play, be tagged as a [Highlight] in the title, be from a high quality source (v.redd.it/Streamable/Clippit/official YouTube channels) or Twitter if not available elsewhere and be from an NFL game. Mod discretion may be used to keep a high quality source over an earlier posted Twitter highlight.

Twitter highlights vary wildly in quality and there is no reason to remove a better qaulity highlight because a lower quality one showed up first. There is a matter of time at play, a nice video posted 20 minutes later won't be kept. It'd be better to just put that link in the already existing post. Also keep in mind low quality or tv recordings are always removed.

Injury Replays

Just a reminder, if it is a replay showing an injury, tag it as [Injury] instead of [Highlight].

Managing Breaking News Posts Moving Forward

Demar Hamlin's injury and the subsequent posts cemented our need to lock down comments in these posts that follow breaking news. Reddit has recently enabled the ability to filter comments and posts by a user's subreddit karma. This will allow us to keep out trolls on unused accounts and brigades from subs that want to highlight their ignorance.

Prediction Posts

We have completed the first regular season of Reddit Prediction Posts, with a few hiccups. Thousands of you have competed each week and it's fun to see the engagement. How do you all feel about them in general? Should we add other polls to spice it up?

Reminder that if you don't want to see those posts, simply block u/The_Cooler_NFL_Mod and you will never see another one. Prediction Posts are the only thing that account does, so you won't miss anything besides those.

Twitter vs. Self Posts

"Mods love twitter posts!", "This would be removed if it wasn't a tweet"...

For years this has been the complaint and we remove tweets everyday. When a post toes the line we discuss as a team and decide if it should be removed. We know we need continue to improve on this and we are working on it.

Of course, any source is allowed to be posted, but for good or bad, Twitter is usually the first with breaking news.

If you see a tweet posted that is just a joke or a dumb hot take, hit report on it and let us know. We do try to keep only relevant posts up, but we are not always online to see things as they happen.

For self posts, the issue we see is there are plenty of self posts, but many are not upvoted and go unseen by most users. If you see some content you like, please upvote it so it can be seen!

The Future of Wagers Threads

The Wagers Thread goes back to the 2012 season in this sub. They were popular for a long time but in recent years they have declined in use. Sometimes there are less than 10 comments in a post. Is this something we should keep doing? Or should we let it go?

We ask that if you see someone breaking the rules, please hit 'report' on their comment so that we can take a look. With the 30,000 up to 60,000 comments that fly through here each day, there is simply no way for us to see them all. If someone is being abusive, let us know! We want game threads (or any post) to be open to everyone to share their awful, awful opinions.

As always, post your thoughts in the comments below.

Mods suck, updoots to the left.

[Yates] While securing a playoff berth was the real prize for Seattle, Detroit's win over the Green Bay was extra sweet for Geno Smith. By playing 80% of the snaps AND making the playoffs, Smith earned an additional $1M incentive. Smith earned all $3.5M of his incentives this season.

Westbrook's low EFG% actually gives role players more confidence to score at will. They know they need to score, or Westbrook may have to shoot a bad shot.

There's a difference in mentality of role players playing with Westbrook and guys like LeBron.

LeBron is already the most efficient scorer. So there could be much more pressure on the role players to score as efficient as LeBron. Otherwise LeBron should just score himself. Obviously this isn't issue for high TS% spot up shooters usually like Kyle Korver. Also no issue with healthy AD, especially in the bubble.

But we can see the big difference when Westbrook runs the offense. Those role players be chucking up shots with confidence because they know/believe it's the best shot vs Westbrook chucking up a shot. This happened in Washington with those role players playing huge like Len Lopez and Gafford.

Thomas Bryant and Gabriel know to just score the ball if Westbrook feeds them. It's the best shot and no alternatives. They know they don't want Westbrook chucking something up. We see it with Troy Brown and Christie too from 3. They know their shot is the best if Westbrook passed them the ball. They are 100% confident. They know if they don't shoot then Westbrook would have to chuck another bad shot.

It might seem laughable, but it's the truth. Role players play with more confidence to score with Westbrook. There's way less pressure.

With LeBron, there's pressure to score as efficient as The King.

LeBron James to @TheAthletic on the Lakers' roster plans: "Y'all know what the f*** should be happening."

In his most extensive comments yet on the Lakers’ lack of upgrades — and more specifically the reluctance to trade the 2027 and 2029 first-round picks that some team officials believe would be better used to chase another star player this summer — James made it clear that his patience is waning.
