[TalkBasket] Klay Thompson to "seriously consider" possibility of joining Bahamian national basketball team because of his father

“When that time comes, I will give it serious consideration just because of what The Bahamas meant to the Thompson family, especially my father,” Thompson said as he and Kevon Looney landed in the Philippines for the final stop of the ANTA World Tour.

His father and former NBA No. 1 overall pick, Mychal Thompson, has a proud Bahamian blood. This ultimately makes Thompson an intriguing, probable reinforcement of the Bahamas squad that targets a coveted basketball seat in next year’s Paris Olympics.

“He never had a chance to play for the national team because they just didn’t have the chance back in the ’70s or the ’80s,” Klay said of his father. “Now my brother [Mychel] is coaching with them which is also very cool.

“But right now, I’m really focused on the [upcoming 2023-24 NBA] season. But when that time comes next summer, I’ll give it consideration.”

The Bahamas conquered last week’s Olympic Pre-Qualifiers of the Americas, sweeping the entire contest with might and dominance. Powered by Deandre Ayton, Buddy Hield, and Eric Gordon – whose cutting of the international play ties with the United States was granted by FIBA – the Bahamians exited the tournament with an unblemished record, pocketing one of the five Olympic Qualifier tickets as they joined Bahrain, Poland, Cameroon, Croatia, and the other 19 yet-to-be-determined nations based on the future results of the ongoing World Cup tourney in Manila, Okinawa, and Jakarta.

Thompson expressed his delight that The Bahamas were able to dismantle hoops powerhouse and the FIBA No. 4 nation Argentina en route to the nation’s biggest win thus far in national program history.

“When it comes to the Bahamian basketball, I couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve accomplished in the past few weeks especially Chris De Marco, Buddy Hield, Deandre Ayton, Eric Gordon, and the rest of the Bahamians,” said the four-time NBA champion.

“Those guys had the biggest win in our country’s history as far as beating Argentina twice on their home soil. [It’s] not an easy task. Argentina is one of the best teams in the world, and it’s just gonna do wonders for the country.”

The Denver Nuggets were the first team since the 1976 NBA/ABA merger to win the Championship without beating a single 50+ win team (or the percentile equivalent)

The Nuggets beat a 42 wins TWovles team, a 45 win Suns team, a 43 win Lakers team, and 44 win Heat team, with a 16-4 record on their way to the chip last season. Pretty wild it took 47 years for this too happen.

What is the most disrespectful play in NBA history?

My personal choice would be Shaq’s dunk on Chris Dudley (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0ICBi-ku-G0) back in a regular season game in 1999. Shaq basically dunked the ball like Dudley wasn’t even there, and then proceeded to shove him down afterwards.

What solidifies the play as the most disrespectful in NBA history (in my opinion) is Dudley, completely and utterly humiliated, throwing the ball at Shaq after the play.

What would have happened if the 49ers selected Mac Jones or Justin Fields at #3 in 2021?

OK I appreciate there have been a lot of Lance threads here today but I'm going in a slightly different direction...

What if the 49ers had traded all those picks to take a different QB? How might things have worked out for the 49ers and for the QBs concerned...?

Mac Jones - I think the immediate narrative would have been far more negative after the pick was made, than it was when they took Lance. Everyone would have said you didn't need to trade up to #3 to take Jones and you're just getting a guy with similar ceiling to Jimmy G. But I think over time this would have been good for the 49ers and good for Mac. He would have done the things that Brock Purdy did but better, he's a more polished and accurate passer. I think he would have worked well in the Shanahan system and he wouldn't have had to deal with Matt Patricia as his OC in year 2. Probably at this point both parties are pretty happy with how things are working out even if the suspicion remains that the 49ers overpaid in the draft.

Justin Fields - I think he delivers what Shanahan was hoping to get from Lance ie a top tier rushing QB who brings a new dimension to the 49ers offense and makes them far less predictable than they have been. He needs to grow as a passer but I think Shanahan would scheme players open for him and with Deebo, Aiyuk, Kittle he would have achieved more as a passer so far than he did in Chicago where he was playing behind a terrible O-line and without much receiving talent until now they have DJ Moore. I think Fields would be ahead of where he is now in Chicago and the 49ers could be a really dangerous team. Possibly Fields is on a Hurts type trajectory if he lands in San Francisco.

So Steph was better than KD in 2016, better than KD from 2020-2013, but KD was randomly just better while they played together?

I meant 2020-2023 smh.

I don’t understand why people don’t get this. KD PERFORMED better than Steph in the Finals because Ty lie LITERALLY SAID his gameplan was to blitz Steph. What about that gives people the indication that KD was the better player during their time?

Maybe warriors fans can vouch for me as far as how these playoff series actually played out below the surface(just comparing Steph and KDs numbers)

If Steph didn’t perform so badly in game 3 in 2018 when that started really trapping him heavy after he went off the first 2 games (KD had some terrible play in the clutch in game 1 btw) he was easily going to be the finals MVP. In my opinion he still should’ve been.

But people forget that Steph was underrated heavily pretty much until 2020-21 because people thought “he can’t do it on his own” which was always as dumb take. Plus KD was the 7’0 guy who could do it all. That didn’t make him better though.

And the series vs the Rockets to me make it even more obvious who was more impactful. When Kd was taking over the offense was completely stagnant the rockets had the upper hand in both series in 2018 and 2019 until Steph started taking over.

Obviously in 2018 CP3 got hurt and Houston choked. But STEPH was the one who turned game 7 around for the Warriors and went off with Klay in game 6.

In 2019, before Kd went out the warriors were on the brink of losing game 5. The offense was so stagnant from Game 3 vs LAC all the way to the 4th of Game 5 vs Houston. KD gets injured and until they broke down against Toronto because of the lack of depth, they looked like the warriors again.

KD was a super Harrison Barnes on Golden State and the more and more he tried to get out of that role and take over the offense, the worse they were. There’s a reason they were mostly healthy in 2019 and only won 58 games despite all the talent.

Not to mention, the 2016 WCF is a series that happened. For some reason Stephs amazing game 5-7 performance just isn’t talked about.

He put up 33/8/7 on 47/47/91… was also killing KD in ISOs in game 7. And since KD left, one guy has been much more successful individually and team wise than the other.

Steph has been better since 2016. It’s simple

Why don't afros come back?

Just saw a photo of Dr J from the 70s with an afro and it looks dope.

I remember in the 2010s players had the flat top hair like Scottie Pippin had in the 90s.

Tom Haberstroh: "That’s right: the NBA put not one, but two San Diego State alums on a Kawhi game. That wasn’t just any old basketball exhibition. That was the infamous “Take That For Data” game..."

A few interesting paragraphs from an article Haberstroh wrote a few weeks ago:

https://www.tomthefinder.com/p/the-nba-is-saying-trust-us-should

A while back, I decided to map every NBA referee and track where they went to college. Did any of them overlap with NBA stars? I thought that might be an interesting thread to pull on. I wondered if the NBA would ever let those officials work those games when they share an alma mater with a star player.

Turns out there were. Two overlaps in particular caught my eye back in the 2016-17 season: James Harden’s Arizona State and Kawhi Leonard’s San Diego State. Longtime official Billy Kennedy went to ASU while two officials Bill Spooner and Rodney Mott attended Leonard’s San Diego State.

I was curious: Did the San Diego State refs, Mott or Spooner, ever work a Leonard game? I pulled up the game logs and scanned for the referees in the box scores.

You know that scene at the end of Usual Suspects, the one when Detective Palminteri drops his coffee mug once he realizes the true identity of Keyzer Soze? That was me when I saw that the officials on an April 17, 2017 playoff game between the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies: Bill Spooner, Dan Crawford and Rodney Mott.

That’s right: the NBA put not one, but two San Diego State alums on a Kawhi game. That wasn’t just any old basketball exhibition. That was the infamous “Take That For Data” game, the one in which Memphis Grizzlies coach David Fizdale famously unleashed an explosive postgame rant blasting officials.

Fizdale’s chief complaint? Leonard, who scored a playoff-career-high 37 points, tallied more free throws than the entire Memphis Grizzlies team.

This seems like a pretty easy landmine for the NBA referee ops to navigate around. In fact, Referee Magazine once listed its conflicts of interests to avoid for officials.

The No. 1 on the list?

Alma mater.

[Stein] The Philadelphia 76ers and Daryl Morey have no intention of enacting a rebuild and, if James Harden is traded for a draft-pick heavy package, those picks are expected to be flipped for a top-level player while also aiming to retain cap space for free agency next Summer.

Source: https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-on-the-latest-james-harden/comments?publication_id=392205&utm_medium=email%2Cemail&comments=true

If the Sixers ultimately trade Harden for a draft pick-heavy package, my belief is that they would be doing so with the intent to flip those picks in a subsequent deal for a top-level player — not because they suddenly covet draft picks.

In other words: I don't believe Morey secretly wants to pursue a "rebuilding" course, as has been suggested in recent days, because he never has before. It would be a complete detour from his careerlong philosophy to initiate a teardown that has the Sixers starting over.

The Sixers' primary team-building objectives, as I understand them, are A) trying to find another star to fortify their Joel Embiid/Tyrese Maxey core and B) preserving next summer’s pathway to significant salary cap space with whatever they do.

If you want to add a broader C) to that list, Philadelphia is most of all determined to avoid doing anything that might lead to Embiid registering a trade demand of his own.

It bears repeating that the Sixers aren't trading Embiid unless Embiid forces them into it. Nothing close to that has happened — yet.

[Meirov] #Bears starting G Teven Jenkins is dealing with a leg injury that might keep him sidelined into the first month of the regular season, per @BradBiggs. Jenkins started 11 games last season. Chicago kicks off their season on September 10th against Green Bay.

With the NFL definitely more a pass first league, have NFL defenses gotten Smaller from an average weight perspective as a trade off to find more speed?

Simple Q -

Offenses are passing more than ever, defenses need to adjust.

Does this mean that the average Linebacker for EX is actually lighter than they were in past years?

The 2023 r/NFL Roast of The Green Bay Packers (21/32)

###WELCOME TO THE 2023 r/NFL ROAST OF THE GREEN BAY PACKERS

-------------

**Guidelines:**

  1. Try to make original jokes. We've all seen the played out jokes and memes (examples:28-3,one yard short, russ throwing on the one yard line), let's get some new material in here. Find a new slant.

  2. Don't waste your good jokes about another team until it's their turn to be roasted.

  3. Jokes are jokes. Laugh, head over to the burn center, and move on. Let's not get into heated arguements in these threads, they are just for fun.

  4. Don't troll and/or attack the users posting jokes.

  5. Teams were chosen in a random order. You'll find out the next team to be roasted in the current thread. This will give you a day to craft your jokes.

  6. HAVE FUN! When all 32 teams have been roasted, we'll be just a few days away from regular season football. That being said, fire away!

**Tomorrow's Team:Atlanta Falcons**

Jerry West once averaged 40 PPG over an entire playoff run.

Perhaps the most ridiculous playoff scoring stretch in NBA history, Jerry West in the 1965 playoffs averaged 40.6 PPG over 11 games.

In this run he scored 40 Points in 6 straight games averaging 46.3 Points in the playoff series against the Buffalo Bullets.

For his era not even Wilt could match Jerry West's playoff scoring.
