With the unveiling of the Magic's new practice facility today, there are now only 5 teams left in the NBA with a single court practice gym: the Rockets, Nuggets, Grizzlies, Hornets and the Heat

I've compiled pictures of the practice courts for those five teams here.

It is pretty evident that the Houston Rockets have by far the worst/smallest practice court in the NBA, with practically zero room outside of the actual lines of the court. It honestly seems a little unsafe which is kind of wild for a multi-billion dollar pro sports team.

For comparison, here are a handful that I would consider top tier in the NBA.

It's also worth noting that the Hornets are in the very early stages of getting a new practice facility so in a few years they will also come off this list.

Jeanie Buss: Russell Westbrook Was Lakers' Best Play Last Year

"All I can say is that, from my point of view, (Westbrook) was our best player last year. He played pretty much every single game, showed up, worked hard. You know, I would have loved to have seen what this team would have looked like if they stayed healthy. It’s really tough to win when Anthony Davis isn’t on the court. LeBron was hurt a lot of the season. But Russ showed up every game and played hard every night. And, you know, I just really appreciate him for who he is and what he brings to the team."

I fucked up the title. Russell Westbrook was best player last yr

https://theathletic.com/3549236/2022/08/30/jeanie-buss-lakers-lebron-westbrook/

So after the interview ended, when I realized that I’d failed to follow up quickly enough to get total clarity on this stunning take, I decided to send Buss a note asking if this was her actual belief.

“The word I should have used was ‘consistent,’” Jeanie Buss wrote via text message. “He played 78 games last season.”

What are some player quotes that aged like fine wine ?

The ones that come to mind to me are obviously Luka's " Everybody acting tough when they're up" in the series against the Suns and Curry's "You dont want to see us next year" after losing in the play in to the Grizzles. Both legendary quotes imo.

credit to the post where I got the idea from : quotes that aged terribly

[Miami Herald] On Friday, Prince made his first appearance in Miami-Dade court and was granted a $2,500 bond. His defense lawyer, David Weinstein, said the charge was already being dismissed in Tarrant County, Texas, and stemmed from a trace amount of marijuana found during a traffic stop.

Prince was unaware that police had filed the warrant for the low-level felony, Weinsten said.

“If he had known warrant existed, he would have surrendered,” Weinstein told Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer.

Prince, who said he was in Miami training, assured the judge he will return to Texas, where he lives.

“Make sure you go to Texas and deal with your open warrant,” Glazer told him.

One of the weirdest takes I've seen in basketball is that LeBron is a pass first player, who else disagrees.

Lebron is absolutely a score first player. He's the greatest slasher in nba history, he's going to be the all time league top scorer. He's won a scoring title. He's imo a score first player who is simultaneously one of the best passers of all time. That doesn't make him a pass first player.

Mavs just f’d over thousands of STHs by assigning them a preseason game in their 10-game mini plan

The “weekend plan” , a 10-game mini plan, was allocated a preseason game on Friday October 7 vs Orlando as one of their 10 games. There are 4 mini plans offered by the Mavs and this is the only one that has a preseason game. Prices of the plan are by game so members are paying the same price for the preseason game as all other games in the plan.

The Christmas Lakers game and the 12/27 Knicks game were not offered in any of the 4 plans, leaving 39 available games across the 4 plans. So essentially the Mavs said “we will give you a preseason game so we can make more $$$ of selling individual tickets for 2 big games”

Beyond ridiculous

[Charania]: Brooklyn has made clear to interested teams that they plan to keep Kyrie, according to sources.

For their part, the Nets believe they have improved the roster and have a championship-level team. The Nets traded for Royce O’Neale, signed T.J. Warren and brought back Patty Mills and Nic Claxton while expecting the full returns of three-time All-Star Simmons and Joe Harris. All-Star Kyrie Irving also opted into his $37 million player option, committed to the 2022-23 season in Brooklyn and sources with knowledge of the situation say he has been working out with teammates and holding constructive dialogue with the organization this offseason. Brooklyn has made clear to interested teams that they plan to keep the seven-time All-Star, according to sources. The Nets were without Simmons and Harris for the majority of last season, including their playoff series against Boston, but both are set to provide a major boost to the upcoming campaign.

Simmons has been cleared for three-on-three basketball activities following back surgery in May, and he is on track to be cleared for full five-on-five activities in the coming weeks, league sources say. The Nets and Simmons expect him to be ready for training camp in late September.

[OC] Why big men age faster and how to fix it, feat. Albert Einstein

It's a common notion around the NBA that the big men of the game often age faster. For example, take Greg Oden, a 7-foot big man who came into the league at just 19 and was hyped as a great big man. However, after the age of 22, he played only 23 more games in the NBA. Further carbon dating performed on his body revealed his biological age to be roughly 500 years. How could this be?

Enter Albert Einstein. The father of the theory of general relativity. This theory tells us that objects closer to a massive object (like the Earth) experience time ticking more slowly than objects further from that same object. This is known as gravitational time dilation, a key consequence of general relativity. This effect is so profound that increasing your height by about a foot will speed up time by about one nanosecond per year (a source). No wonder our big men are reaching impotence at such young ages. But what can be done to allow the big man to remain robust into old age?

My first proposal would be to instruct the big man to lie down, a lot. If team trainers tied a 7-foot big man to the ground and only allowed him to get up for big games, he could theoretically shave about seven nanoseconds off his age each year (one nanosecond for each foot closer to the Earth). If the big man of interest is on a max contract worth about $40 million per year, this one weird trick could be worth about 9 nanodollars per year (40 million dollars times 7 nanoseconds divided by 31,536,000 seconds, or the number of seconds in one year). Doctors hate this because it doesn't really do shit.

My next proposal would be to have the big man spend his offseasons in a space hotel mere kilometers from a small black hole. According to analytics, if we place the big man about 3 kilometers from a small black hole of one solar mass, we can slow his aging down to just 1% of the normal rate relative to a normal person on Earth. If he spends six months of the year in this space hotel, over the course of the year he'll only age by about six months and two days. Thus, his career will last about twice as long. This is a revolution in sports medicine. However, physical proximity to even a small black hole presents practical difficulties. We must find alternative methods.

My last proposal would be to strap the big man into a small Ferris wheel and spin it fast. As with objects in a strong gravitational field, objects that are accelerating very quickly create the phenomenon of artificial gravity and therefore also experience gravitational time dilation due to the equivalence principle. If we take a Ferris wheel with a diameter of 10 meters and spin it at about 5.1 million revolutions per second, the big man will age only about 1% as fast as a normal person sitting on the surface of the Earth (I did the math) due to centripetal acceleration. This will be an unpleasant experience, but I expect a team with the right culture could embrace it (hmu Pat Riley). With my methods, Udonis Haslem could still be in the league in the year 3000.

For reference, here is an artist's rendition of big man Chet Holmgren on a Ferris wheel. Many draft pundits had concerns about this big man's durability, and those concerns were only magnified when he broke his tibia and fibia (as reported by u/Giddey_Cent) after mere seconds of exposure to bigger man LeBron James. Slowing Chet's aging process to just 1% of the normal rate could ease these durability concerns. Therefore, Sam Presti should think long and hard about a Ferris wheel ride with the big man.

https://twitter.com/actionnetworkhq/status/1561042270186512386?s=21&t=G_2qlMXh6wpJCkNpYPtaNw

Who is the better player in the playoffs, Kawhi Leonard or Giannis Antetokounmpo?

Over their last 4 playoff runs (60 games for Kawhi, 57 for Giannis), these are their numbers

Kawhi: 29.4ppg/8.6rpg/4.5apg/1.9spg/0.7bpg/2.6tov on 63.3% TS

Giannis: 28.7ppg/13.2rpg/5.5apg/0.9spg/1.4bpg/3.6tov on 58.2% TS

Kawhi scores a little more, does it significantly more efficiently. Giannis is the better and more impactful defender. Their playmaking is a wash.

Who is the superior playoff player? Obviously assume Kawhi is relatively healthy

Asking Blazers broadcasters to call road games from home will absolutely gut the fan viewing experience. Jody Allen’s team needs to scrap this plan — now.

Context from Bill Oram’s article:

The cost-cutting Portland Trail Blazers don’t think you’ll notice that their broadcasters won’t be on the road next season. It’s a decision, first brought to light by Dwight Jaynes and Chad Doing on their afternoon drive-time show on KPOJ-AM, that the team says is not final.

More fuel for the “Jody Allen should sell the team to Phil Knight” train.

People often say that "voter fatigue" kept LeBron from winning more than 4 MVPs and that he deserves much more. But after he won his 4th in 2013, what year did he actually get robbed in? If anything, his strongest case in a year he didn't win would be all the way back when he had 0 MVPs in 2006.

Let's go year by year since 2013:

2014: LeBron: 27/7/6, 64.9% TS, 54-28 record(2 seed)

Winner: Kevin Durant: 32/7/6, 63.5% TS, 59-23 record(2 seed)

This one wasn't very controversial at the time. The 1% TS gap hardly makes up for 5 PPG or 5 more wins(with Westbrook hurt half the season.) MVP 1st place voting was Durant 119, LeBron 6.

2015: LeBron: 25/6/7, 57.7% TS, 53-29 record(1 seed)

Winner: Stephen Curry: 24/4/8, 63.8% TS, 65-17 record(1 seed)

Again, this isn't very controversial. LeBron's efficiency this season was a career worst thanks to a back injury. In fact, even 2nd place MVP finisher James Harden put up equal or better stats with more wins this season.

2016: LeBron: 25/7/7, 58.8% TS, 57-25 record(1 seed)

Winner: Stephen Curry: 30/5/6, 66.9% TS, 73-9 record(1 seed)

I don't think much needs to be said here.

2017: LeBron: 26/9/9, 61.9% TS, 51-31 record(2 seed)

Winner: Russell Westbrook: 32/11/10, 55.4% TS, 45-37 record(6 seed)

This is certainly one of the more controversial MVPs in recent memory, and LeBron's stats actually stack up pretty well with the three main candidates of Westbrook/Harden/Kawhi. However, similar to Giannis this season, LeBron got punished for being in between Westbrook and Harden in wins while playing in a far weaker conference with much better teammates. He got a total of 1 first place vote this season

2018: LeBron: 28/9/9, 62.1% TS, 50-32 record(4 seed)

Winner: James Harden: 30/5/9, 61.9% TS, 65-17 record(1 seed)

Almost identical statlines this year between LeBron and Harden, but one won 15 more games. Even though LeBron obviously had a far worse team, it would be completely against precedent to give it to anyone but Harden this season.

2019: Missed playoffs so no chance

2020: LeBron: 25/8/10, 57.7% TS, 52-19 record(1 seed)

Winner: Giannis: 30/14/6, 61.3% TS, 56-17 record(1 seed)

Somehow, this one was slightly controversial. I'm not exactly sure how. Giannis led in PPG, RPG, TS%, and team record, with LeBron's only edge being assists. In addition, Giannis had no teammate who was half as good as 2020 Anthony Davis. Maybe people conflate the playoffs with the regular season?

2021: Hurt so no chance

2022: Missed playoffs so no chance

By suspending Deshaun Watson fewer than 12 games, his contract will not toll an additional year, allowing him to receive his $46M salary next year, rather than the $1M he would've earned in 2023 with a longer suspension

While many have speculated that the Browns/Texans matchup is the primary reason for 11 games, the contact situation is also likely a big driving factor.

Why did Tim Duncan never win a DPOY?

He’s widely seen as one of the greatest defenders ever, but as far as I’ve seen he’s never even finished top two in DPOY voting. Was this a result of competition for the award being strong (Ben Wallace and Dwight Howard later on)?

Andrew Wiggins (11,519 PTS) has more career points than Kawhi Leonard (11,085 PTS)

https://twitter.com/NBAMuse24/status/1558159801540124673?t=NJ1x0BYTgR4tgQKXyK4tHw&s=19

Kawhi is 4 years older than Wiggins but this stat isn't that surprising with context as Kawhi

• Played behind the Spurs dynasty early on • Entered the league as a pure defender and then grew into a two way player • Never played the full 82 games of a season

Things were quite the opposite for Wiggins as he

• Was always a starter • Entered the league as a scorer and put up "empty stats" on a bad team • Played multiple full seasons

I think the roles have been reversed for Leonard, Wiggins and their respective teams.

Kawhi realized his scoring potential and Andrew realized his defensive potential and strength on the boards.

What are your most unpopular NBA opinions?

These threads always have great discussions and it's been a while since the last one.

Don't say that the refs are bad or that players are flopping/not playing defense. These aren't unpopular.

1) Draft picks are overrated

2) The NBA should stop checking for PEDs

3) The Suns meltdown was overblown and they're going to come back stronger this year

4) There are a lot of Andrew Wiggins out there, good players who are being misused by bad organizations.

5) I'll take Michael Porter Jr. over a lot of players like Sabonis, Garland, or LaMelo

6) The All-Star game format should go back to Fan Voting

Who had the better 4 year Peak? KD(2012-2016) or Giannis(2018-2022)

I saw this debate on Twitter and it was pretty even. I think KD takes it by a hair because he was basically making WCF regularly in a stacked west including a finals vs Heatles which I think is slightly more impressive than Giannis 1 ring. As players Giannis is obviously the much better defender but KD had maybe a top 3 scoring peak ever.

The entire lottery of the 2013 NBA Draft combined for only 2 All Star appearances, both by Victor Oladipo. For reference, 2012’s combined for a whopping 19 all star appearances

The draft order was:

Pk Tm Player
1 CLE Anthony Bennett
2 ORL Victor Oladipo
3 WAS Otto Porter Jr.
4 CHA Cody Zeller
5 PHO Alex Len
6 PHI Nerlens Noel
7 SAC Ben McLemore
8 DET Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
9 UTA Trey Burke
10 POR CJ McCollum
11 PHI Michael Carter-Williams
12 OKC Steven Adams
13 BOS Kelly Olynyk
14 MIN Shabazz Muhammad

Here’s the amounts for every draft since 2010

2010: 17

2011: 16

2012: 19

2013: 2

2014: 9

2015: 8

2016: 7

2017: 7

2018: 5

2019: 3

2020: 1

2021: 0

As you could have probably guessed, the more recent the draft the less All Star selections. But even then, you have to go all the way to 2020 to find a draft that has had less selections than 2013. 2 selections in 9 years is just terrible.

[CBS] NFL to relax on roughing the passer calls

https://ift.tt/AyzGv09

[Helin] That said, even without Smart (or Robert Williams III, sources told NBC Sports he is not available), a Celtics offer with Jaylen Brown may be the best one the Nets will see.

There’s good reason for pessimism, Durant’s ultimatum to Nets owner Joe Tsai did not light a fire under trade talks. If anything, it made it far less likely a deal gets done in the short term. — why would Boston improve its offer now? It robbed the Nets of leverage. For example, Brooklyn was trying to get Boston to put Smart in the trade, but why would they even consider it now?

Despite Durant’s best efforts, things likely stay quiet on the trade front until it gets closer to training camp in September. The big question then becomes, are Tsai and GM Sean Marks willing to be uncomfortable — will they wait out a Durant offer they think is fair like Daryl Morey did with Ben Simmons last season, or will they cave and trade KD just to get something and move on? We will find out in a month or so.

[Stein] League sources tell me that Durant’s latest deal includes the most aggressive early payment schedule allowed by league rules; he’ll receive half of his $42,969,845 salary in Year 1 in two installments before the first week of training camp is complete

Most NBA players don’t start collecting their annual salaries until the season actually starts, but league sources tell me that Durant’s latest deal indeed includes the most aggressive early payment schedule allowed by league rules.

Translation: Durant’s contract calls for him to receive half of his $42,969,845 salary in Year 1 in two installments before the first week of training camp is complete. That computes to a total of $21,484,922.

The advance amount in these cases, as seen last season with Ben Simmons before Philadelphia traded Simmons to Brooklyn, is typically paid in two equal shares on July 1 and Oct. 1. In Durant's case, that means he was due a check of $10,742,461 on the day after informing Brooklyn that he wants to be dealt.

The remaining half of Durant's 2022-23 salary, once checks are cut July 1 and Oct. 1, would then be paid out on a standard in-season check cycle.

[Windhorst] The league was pretty surprised by this move by Durant, it's a little bit curious.

What he wanted was to re-iterate his trade demand, recent weeks not much progress on trade talks, had positioned themselves to bring KD back.

Windhorst said that it has limited his options for a trade, the coming drama is training camp about showing up after being told "no" in this situation.

On whether he'll show up for camp or not:

That (having him accept that he might not be traded) the Nets were on that path. He still wants out of the Nets. The most important thing that happened here. Status quote is not an option for him.

Windhorst says that the second thing to take away from this is the 2nd sentence of Tsai's tweet, it was a message to Durant and the whole league, code for we are not going to make a trade just to satisfy this player.

He suspects that will be their position come training camp, could lead to Durant not showing up.

[OC] I Hate Traditional Rebounding Stats, So I Made My Own (A.K.A. Who Are the Most Selfless/Selfish Rebounders)

We all know that advanced stats have their issues, but some traditional stats are even worse. Just because they're easy to understand doesn't mean that they tell us anything interesting. The worst offender is individual rebounding numbers, which have bothered me for years.

Individual rebounding numbers say nothing about whether the player makes the team more likely to gain a rebound. We end up celebrating the players that fight their own teammates for the ball (or, the stars that have an agreement with their teammates that they get all the uncontested rebounds).

Even “advanced” rebounding stats aren’t much better. Stats like Rebound Percentage tell us the percentage of rebounds an individual player grabs during the minutes they’re on the court, but nothing about how those help the team. If a player is amazing at boxing out, I think they should get some credit for the rebounds they helped create.

I decided to take a stab at solving this. I wanted to figure out how a player’s minutes on the court impacted the team’s rebounding rate, so I came up with a stat (well, three of them) that does just that.

Rebounding contribution percentage (RC%), offensive rebounding contribution percentage (oRC%), and defensive rebounding contribution percentage (dRC%) show the percentage of total, offensive, and defensive rebounds that your team can expect to win just by having a particular player on the court.

Learn more about how it works, or skip ahead to see which players look better and which look worse!

Methodology

TL;DR: My computer pretended it had no idea what players were good rebounders, then watched the 2021-2022 season a bunch of times in a row, slowly noticing which players were on the court when their teams came up with a lot of rebounds.

First, I randomly assigned a starting “rebound skill” value to all players*. Next, I ran through every single rebound that happened during the 2021-2022 season and gave points to the team that won the rebound. A rebound was worth more if the opposing players on the court were good at rebounding (high “rebound skill” values) and worth less if they were bad (low “rebound skill” values).

The points then got split among the team’s players based on their current “rebound skill” value. After simulating the entire season, I calculated new “rebound skill” values based on the number of points each player received last time. Using these new values, I simulated the entire season again (and again, and again) until the values converged.

*The starting value doesn’t matter. I re-ran this a bunch of times with different starting values, and the ending values are the same no matter what.

Criticisms

A. It’s impossible to objectively distinguish between players in the minutes they share the court. This means that players frequently sharing the court with great rebounders will look better than they are (and great rebounders on terrible rebounding teams will look worse).

B. Many rebounds aren’t contested, and will “randomly” go to whoever is nearby. This sets a floor for how low this stat can get.

C. With A and B combined, it means this stat understates the difference in impact. I’d be willing to bet a significant amount of money that Steven Adams is more than 15% better at rebounding than Ben McLemore. I feel reasonably confident in the rankings this stat generates, but I wouldn’t put a ton of stock into the percentage values themselves.

D. Other factors can significantly impact these stats. Most notably, some teams strategically ignore offensive rebounds in order to get back on defense. That doesn’t make their players worse at offensive rebounding.

Results

Without further ado, here’s what I found. All leaderboards only include players that were on the court for 2000 or more rebound opportunities = roughly 1000 minutes played.:

Note that the average total percentage is exactly 10.0 (100% divided by the ten players on the court), while offensive and defensive averages are about 6.2% and 14.1%, respectively.

Best Defensive Rebound Contributors

A lot of good individual rebounders show up here, along with 6’2” (!) Dame and 6’4” Grayson Allen. I’ll investigate whether these should be believed further down.

Player dRC%
1. Kristaps Porzingis (DAL, WAS) 15.09%
2. Jusuf Nurkic (POR) 15.07%
3. Domantas Sabonis (IND, SAC) 14.98%
4. Damian Lillard (POR) 14.97%
5. Jrue Holiday (MIL) 14.92%
6. Jonas Valanciunas (NOP) 14.90%
7. Giannis Antetokounmpo (MIL) 14.88%
8. Grayson Allen (MIL) 14.78%
9. Nikola Jokic (DEN) 14.78%
10. Troy Brown Jr. (CHI) 14.76%

Best Offensive Rebound Contributors

Four Grizzlies, three of them 6’5” or below (Morant, Konchar, and Melton). Memphis led the league in offensive rebounds by a large margin, so this isn’t too surprising, but I’ll investigate whether they pass further scrutiny below. Also three Raptors, who were second in the league. Not sure if these teams go for offensive rebounds because their players are good at it, or if their players look good at offensive rebounding because they prioritize them.

Player oRC%
1. Steven Adams (MEM) 7.32%
2. Chris Boucher (TOR) 7.10%
3. Jalen Smith (PHO, IND) 7.06%
4. Khem Birch (TOR) 7.05%

8. Precious Achiuwa (TOR) 6.95%
9. De’Anthony Melton (MEM) 6.93%
10. Oshae Brissett (IND) 6.90%

Best Total Rebound Contributors

A bunch of really good rebounders, the aforementioned Morant, and… Jordan Clarkson? Playing with three of the best rebounders in the league definitely helps, but I’ll try to untangle Clarkson’s influence below.

Player RC%.
1. Steven Adams (MEM) 10.96%
2. Hassan Whiteside (UTA) 10.81%
3. Nikola Jokic (DEN) 10.74%
4. Ja Morant (MEM) 10.74%
5. JaVale McGee (PHO) 10.71%
6. Rudy Gobert (UTA) 10.70%
7. Aaron Gordon (DEN) 10.65%
8. Kevon Looney (GSW) 10.65%
9. Jordan Clarkson (UTA) 10.64%
10. Jrue Holiday (MIL) 10.64%

Worst Defensive Rebound Contributors

Just a bunch of random names here. No one particularly known for their rebounding prowess though, so no shame. Two Nets top the list, even though Brooklyn was middle of the pack in defensive rebounding as a team.

Player dRC%
1. James Johnson (BRK) 13.25%
2. Nic Claxton (BRK) 13.30%
3. Josh Christopher (HOU) 13.32%
4. Taurean Prince (MIN) 13.32%
5. Naz Reid (MIN) 13.41%
6. Ben McLemore (POR) 13.46%
7. DeAndre’ Bembry (BRK, MIL) 13.46%
8. Kenyon Martin Jr. (HOU) 13.50%
9. Jalen McDaniels (CHO) 13.50%
10. Ish Smith (CHO, WAS) 13.50%

Worst Offensive Rebound Contributors

A few surprising names at the top of this list! Embiid and Vucevic spend more time on the perimeter than other centers, so those make some sense to me, but I’ve got no idea why Ayton is so low. Any Suns fans care to comment? Does Phoenix just ignore offensive rebounds entirely?

Player oRC%
1. Deandre Ayton (PHO) 4.91%
2. Joel Embiid (PHI) 5.12%
3. Nikola Vucevic (CHI) 5.14%
4. Jae Crowder (PHO) 5.20%
5. Blake Griffin (BRK) 5.28%
6. Lonzo Ball (CHI) 5.28%
7. Zach LaVine (CHI) 5.29%
8. Nicolas Batum (LAC) 5.30%
9. Tyrese Maxey (PHI) 5.41%
10. Theo Maledon (OKC) 5.43%

Worst Total Rebound Contributors

A lot of young players and journeymen here, so I don’t want to shame anyone.

Player RC%
1. Ben McLemore (POR) 9.53%
2. Taurean Prince (MIN) 9.56%
3. Naz Reid (MIN) 9.58%
4. Frank Jackson (DET) 9.66%
5. Damian Jones (SAC) 9.69%
6. Hamidou Diallo (DET) 9.71%

8. Killian Hayes (DET) 9.75%
9. Trey Lyles (DET, SAC) 9.76%
10. Matisse Thybulle (PHI) 9.76%

Other Fun Findings

Low Minute Positive Outliers

I’ll call out a few players that have great numbers, but not enough minutes to qualify for the leaderboards above.

  • Markief Morris would shoot up to #1 overall in 298 minutes (10.97 RC%).
  • 6’4” Trent Forrest comes in shockingly high at #3 overall in 765 minutes (10.88 RC%).
  • Derrick Favors and Brook Lopez top the defensive list in injury-shortened seasons (15.53 dRC% and 15.27 dRC%, respectively)
  • Energetic young players take over the top offensive spots if you ignore minutes played. See:
    • Paul Reed (7.92 oRC%)
    • Justin Champagnie (7.67 oRC%)
    • Santi Aldama (7.43 oRC%)
    • David Duke Jr. (7.30 oRC%)
  • Also, shout out to Tristan Thompson, who came in above Adams at 7.45 oRC% but barely missed the cutoff with 897 minutes played.

Low Minute Negative Outliers

…and a couple players that didn’t have enough minutes to qualify for the anti-leaderboards:

  • In contrast to his cousin Dame (see below), Keljin Blevins is not underrated at rebounding. He comes in dead last in his 349 minutes (8.99 RC%).
  • Semi Ojeleye comes in right behind at 9.17 RC% in 406 minutes.
  • Keon Johnson and Thanasis Antetokounmpo come in last on the defensive end with 12.58 dRC% each.
  • Paul Reed is third worst on the defensive side, but best overall on the offensive side. Any Philly fans know what’s going on there?
  • Joe Harris takes the last spot on the offensive end when you ignore minutes played with an exceedingly low 4.45 oRC%.

Unexpectedly Positive Contributors (A.K.A. Selfless Rebound Givers)

These are players who scored much better in this stat than their conventional rebound numbers would suggest. I added some commentary about whether these new numbers should be believed.

  • Dame (3.6 DRB per 36, but 14.97 dRC%) - I definitely didn’t expect to see Lillard this high! Unfortunately, I think this one is a mirage. He played more than 60% of his 1000 minutes with Nurkic this year, which would make anyone look better. Plus, lineups with Nurkic + Smith Jr. or Nurkic + Snell rebounded even better (Nurkic + McCollum was just slightly worse).
  • Jrue Holiday (3.8 DRB per 36, but 14.92 dRC%) and Grayson Allen (3.8 DRC per 36, but 14.78 dRC%) - Almost identical numbers for these two players, but different conclusions. Holiday did play a lot of minutes with Giannis and/or Lopez, but his lineups rebounded very well even without either of those players. On the other hand, Allen played almost 70% of his minutes with Giannis, and his numbers got a lot worse without Giannis helping out.
  • John Konchar, Ja Morant, De’Anthony Melton, Desmond Bane (2.4, 1.5, 1.4, and 0.7 ORB per 36, but huge oRC% from all four) - Man, Memphis was fun this year! All of these guys are definitely getting carried by Steven Adams (who grabbed a league leading 6.3 ORB per 36), but pretty much every lineup pulled down a ton of offensive boards. Adams + Konchar grabbed a particularly insane 42% of offensive rebounds! Adams + Morant led the league by getting 56% of all rebounds!
  • Jordan Clarkson (4.6 TRB per 36, but 10.64% RC%) - Utah was a great rebounding team overall last year with both Gobert and Whiteside, but it looks like Clarkson should get some credit as well. Lineups with Clarkson were significantly better than league average (and also notably better than similar lineups with Mitchell instead).

Unexpectedly Negative Contributors (A.K.A. Selfish Rebound Hogs)

And here are a few who look a bit worse with these stats than their existing reputation:

  • Andre Drummond (11.3 DRB per 36, but a below-average 13.9% dRC%) - Almost every single player with high rebounding numbers scored pretty well on these stats, except Drummond. I don’t want to slander him too much, since lineups featuring Drummond rebounded at a slightly above average rate (in both PHI and BRK). But I think it’s fair to say that Drummond doesn’t improve the team as much as his eye-popping numbers would suggest.
  • Rudy Gobert (12.3 DRB per 36, and 14.33% dRC%) - Lineups featuring Gobert are significantly better than league average at defensive rebounding, so this is pretty mild criticism. But he still pulls in more for himself than he gives to his teammates.
  • Deandre Ayton (3.1 ORB per 36, and last in the league 4.91% oRC) - Ayton actually pulls in a good number of offensive rebounds for himself (28th in the league), so I don’t know what’s going on here. And it’s supported by other stats - lineups with Ayton bring in an insanely low number of offensive rebounds, especially compared to lineups with McGee, which are a good bit above league average.
