Announcing the [Injury] Tag Policy for Videos

TL;DR- Moving forward, injury-related videos must be tagged with the [Injury] tag instead of [Highlight].

Based on feedback from the r/NFL community, we are making a small change to our policy on tagging injury-related videos.

Our users stated that they felt "dirty" tagging injury-related posts as [Highlight] and that they wanted a different designation for them.

We also heard that those who are squeamish and faint of heart wanted more transparency to avoid potentially NSFL posts.

So, moving forward, users submitting any injury-related clips must post with the [Injury] tag in lieu of the [Highlight] one.

Our highlight policy of submitting a non-editorialized title applies to injury posts as well. A description of the play, the players involved, and the outcome (if known) would be approved. A hyperbolic title would not. Examples:

Allowed: "[Injury] Steve Young suffers a concussion from an Aeneas Williams hit, ending his career."

Not Allowed: "[Highlight] Aeneas sends Steve Young to the shadow realm with a bone crunching injury."

Posts tagged with the [Injury] designation are to be considered serious threads, and any comments celebrating player injuries may result in further action from the mods.

Questions? Comments? Clarification? Sound off in the comments below.

[Patt] The Bulls aren’t going to lose out on Lonzo Ball, so there’s some speculation that the tampering punishment could be worse, assuming there is punishment. Cody Westerlund of 670 The Score says “there’s a belief in some NBA circles that the Bulls could be docked a first-round draft pick.”

Source

The Chicago Bulls struck right away at the start of 2021 free agency, coming to terms with Lonzo Ball on a four-year, $80 million sign-and-trade deal within the opening minute. The Bulls had been trying to acquire Ball going back to the 2020-21 trade deadline, and all signs had pointed to them getting their man in free agency.

Because of how quickly the deal involving Ball and the New Orleans Pelicans came together, the NBA launched a tampering investigation. Kyle Lowry’s sign-and-trade deal with the Miami Heat also got caught up in an investigation.

That was nearly two months ago at this point, and the investigation is ongoing as training camp begins. Last year’s tampering investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks for the botched Bogdan Bogdanovic trade talks took about a month before the punishment was doled out. The Bucks were docked a 2022 second-round pick, with the failure to wind up with Bogdanovic playing a role in the decision.

The Bulls aren’t going to lose out on Ball, so there’s some speculation that the punishment could be worse, assuming there is punishment. Cody Westerlund of 670 The Score says “there’s a belief in some NBA circles that the Bulls could be docked a first-round draft pick.”

Chicago is out two first-round picks from the Nikola Vucevic trade and another one from the DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade, but one came back in the Lauri Markkanen sign-and-trade. Perhaps that pick (2022 lottery protected first from the Portland Trail Blazers) will be taken away from them, but that still remains to be seen. It would obviously be ideal to not lose that pick and be able to use it as a trade chip.

UPDATE: Apologies to Dwight Howard. Joel Ayayi is the one who isn't a team player.

Hello everyone, you may have seen my groundbreaking post exposing Dwight Howard for being a bad teammate and choosing the wrong jersey number yesterday, but alas more information has come to light and I need to apologize to Dwight.

New numbers have been revealed for the rest of the Lakers roster today and upon review, it turns out that it's Joel Ayayi who really messed things up. Allow me to explain.

Yesterday, here's what the Lakers roster looked like:

  • 0 - Russell Westbrook
  • 1 - Trevor Ariza
  • 2 - Wayne Ellington
  • 3 - Anthony Davis
  • 4 - Rajon Rondo
  • 5 - Talen Horton-Tucker
  • 6 - LeBron James
  • 7 - Carmelo Anthony
  • 8 - Retired for Kobe Bryant
  • 9 - Kent Bazemore
  • 10 - DeAndre Jordan
  • 11 - Malik Monk
  • 12 - Kendrick Nunn
  • 13 - Retired for Wilt Chamberlain
  • 39(?!) - Dwight Howard
  • 15 - Austin Reaves

However, today three new numbers were unveiled. Mac McClung and Chaundee Brown chose numbers 37 and 38, most likely in an attempt to make Dwight Howard not look so fucking stupid by wearing number 39. Conclusion: Mac McClung and Chaundee Brown are AMAZING teammates.

But then, a tragedy occurred. It was announced that instead of choosing #14, Joel Ayayi chose to wear #17 instead. Devastating. Now the roster looks like this:

  • 0 - Russell Westbrook
  • 1 - Trevor Ariza
  • 2 - Wayne Ellington
  • 3 - Anthony Davis
  • 4 - Rajon Rondo
  • 5 - Talen Horton-Tucker
  • 6 - LeBron James
  • 7 - Carmelo Anthony
  • 8 - Retired for Kobe Bryant
  • 9 - Kent Bazemore
  • 10 - DeAndre Jordan
  • 11 - Malik Monk
  • 12 - Kendrick Nunn
  • 13 - Retired for Wilt Chamberlain
  • 15 - Austin Reaves
  • 17 - Joel Ayayi
  • 37 - Mac McClung
  • 38 - Chaundee Brown
  • 39 - Dwight Howard

Conclusion: Joel Ayayi hates his teammates. SMH.

I was asking around a couple of teams, just for their opinion on the trade value of Kyrie Irving: it’s virtually zero. I mean, he makes $35 million this year, and he’s as unpredictable as you get so why would you give up anything of value to get him back in return? The Nets just gotta be crossing their fingers right now, hoping Durant and whoever else has influence over Kyrie in that organization gets through to him before Oct 8.

Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. isn’t comfortable taking the vaccine for COVID-19 and is adamant there shouldn’t be a mandate for NBA players to take it.

Porter, in an interview with The Denver Post, said his opinion is based on two separate bouts with COVID.

“For me, I had COVID twice, I saw how my body reacted, and although the chances are slim, with the vaccine, there’s a chance you could have a bad reaction to it,” Porter said. “For me, I don’t feel comfortable.

“My stance on the mandate is it definitely shouldn’t be a mandate. It should be everyone’s decision. I see it both ways. If you want to get it because you feel more protected and you feel safer, and it’s protecting people around you, get it. That’s good for you. But if you feel like, ‘Oh, for me, I don’t feel safe getting it, then don’t get it.’”

Porter isn’t the only Nuggets player unvaccinated. He, along with any unvaccinated teammate, will be subject to onerous testing and other restrictions. The guidelines are outlined in the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

“I’ve had it twice, and I don’t know what’s going in my body with a shot, so if I already know how I’m going to react to COVID, I just feel like, for me, I don’t want to risk putting something that might affect me negatively in my body,” Porter said.

Scotto: I spoke with one agent who reps a player on the 76ers over the weekend. He said, “If they can’t figure it out, the season’s over before it even starts.”

It seems, as of right now, the best Philly can theoretically get for a win-now player in the short-term would be a deal with Portland for CJ McCollum, but Philly has had their eyes on Damian Lillard for a while, and they don’t want to settle.

[King] Marcus Smart said he strongly considered turning down the $77 million contract extension to test free agency. He had a number in mind. “At least $90 million.” Smart considers himself “blessed” to have signed such a hefty contract, but still thinks several lesser players cashed bigger checks.

Source

Before signing a four-year, $77 million contract extension in August, Smart said he strongly considered turning down the offer to test free agency next summer. That was the maximum value the Celtics could offer in negotiations at the time, but Smart could have waited until the next offseason to seek more money from either Boston or another team. He even had a number in mind.

“At least $90 million,” Smart said.

After discussions with those he trusts, Smart eventually decided the security of a long-term contract outweighed the possibility of chasing what he believes he’s worth. Smart said he considers himself “blessed” to have signed such a hefty contract, which will run through the 2025-26 season, but still thinks several lesser players cashed bigger checks.

“For me, it was, I’ve gotta get paid,” Smart said. “I’ve gotta get mine. Everybody else in my position that I’ve dominated are getting theirs. And it’s like, I know I do way more than these guys. I’m on a better team as well. So it’s like, what’s going on? I was actually willing to go straight into free agency and go to the market. But just talking to my circle, my family, my people and just understanding the pros versus the cons, the good versus the bad and things like that. What are you willing to sacrifice? What are you willing to gain? So it was a business decision. Especially with the way everything’s going with COVID and everything, nothing’s for sure, nothing’s guaranteed. So I wanted to make sure I give myself a shot for another payday eventually by taking care of business on this one. So it was a business decision for me.”

Official r/NFL Week 3 Power Rankings

The more you know, the less you realize you know. The saying holds especially true for NFL power rankings. Really makes someone wonder if a 66-yard doink is truly the difference between a 27th ranked team and a 9th rank team. 31/32 reporting, whose rankings are forgettable? And whose head will we call for next?

# Team Δ Record Comment
1. Rams +2 3-0 Wow the Bucs suck. They have no defense, no run game, and Timmy B doesn’t know how to play football in LA. It’s nice to know they won’t be a problem in the playoffs. As predicted, Bucs fans are blaming the loss on the refs over… checks notes … a missed taunting call (?), then calling Rams fans bandwagoners… that’s rich. Whatever, the Rams look unstoppable, especially at home. Seachickens lose, 40whiners lose, what a great day. We going all the way, count the chickens.
2. Buccaneers -1 2-1 The Rams are for real, and GM Samuel Lester Snead's strategy of "1st round picks are for cowardly weasels" seems to be paying off. Despite throwing for over 400 yards and somehow leading the team in rushing, Tom Brady couldn't play defense. Desean Jackson shredded the secondary for 120 yards and seems to be doing well with McVay's offense, though he may have been a better fit for a Reich or Arians, if you catch mein drift. For the Bucs, there's little reason to panic, though. Their next four opponents are a combined 4-8, each with a losing record.
3. Bills +2 2-1 The reports of Josh Allen’s death have been greatly exaggerated. There’s nothing more of substance to add, so enjoy 6 minutes of our king hanging dong on the team with no name.
4. Browns +2 2-1 Turns out having Myles Garrett yelling at teammates worked out great. With nine sacks, 4.5 from Garrett alone, the Browns made Justin Fields' life hell. The dual-back threat of Hunt and Chubb made easy work of the Bears defense. The Browns were also aided by offensive play calling from Matt Nagy. The Browns will take on the Vikings in Minnesota for Week 4.
5. Raiders +3 3-0 With two out of three games going to overtime for the Raiders, they have had to play 14 quarters of football in 13 days. Luckily, though, they are 3-0. 38 teams in NFL history have had to play their first three games against opponents that won 10 or more games the previous season. This Raiders team is the only one to start 3-0. Not only that, but the Raiders also have four different players with 200+ receiving yards (no other team has more than two) and are the only team in history to have had four receivers reach that milestone within the first three games. To top it all off, Derek Carr continues to play elite football, becoming only the fourth QB to ever throw for 1,200 yards in his team's first three games of the season.
6. Cardinals +1 3-0 Cat team? Check. East coast game? Check. Rookie QB who hasn’t been performing to expectations? Check. All the makings of a disaster for the Cardinals, and in the first half it was! Until it wasn’t anymore, and Kingsbury promptly remembered that this team should be good. The next three games (@LAR, vs. SF, @CLE) will be a great test for this inconsistent team. Sidenote, Byron Murphy Jr. continues to wreck the league with two interceptions on Sunday, one returned for a touchdown. Reminders will continue until hype improves.
7. Chiefs -5 1-2 Just more yuck, man. It is hard to win football games when your offense turns the ball over three straight drives to start the game, especially when your defense is 11/12 at giving up a touchdown in the redzone on the season. The Chiefs have a lot of issues to sort out right now and maybe going back to the basics will help. The good news is the revamped Oline continues to look good and Clyde Edwards-Helaire was able to bounce back from a fumble and look good against the Chargers. The Chiefs need to come out next week and blow out the Eagles to get their mojo back.
8. Packers +3 2-1 The Packers did a very Packer thing and took a game they had under control and then messed it up with poor special teams and a defense that melted in the biggest moments. Fortunately, the 49ers left just enough time for Aaron to do Aaron things and win anyway. Big shoutout to Mason Crosby for being a rock on this team for the last 15 years and being super clutch once again. The run defense wasn't a complete sieve, but our lack of linebacker play hurt us again with our inability to effectively cover the middle of the field (though Kittle is hard to stop for any team, so not too much blame here). Jaire allowed his first touchdown in 17 games but had a sick interception, so that's cool. Offensively, we opted for a ton of quick passes, which really took advantage of the lack of depth in the San Francisco secondary and prevented our inexperienced OL from getting bogged down against what should be a very good Niners DL. Running game was solid once again, thank you Aaron Jones, very cool. Things are looking up, though definitely still lots to improve on.
9. Ravens -5 2-1 Hollywood should thank Tucker for that game-saving, record-breaking, testicle-enhancing performance he pulled out of his ass. The Cardiac Crows live to another week. By the way, Tucker has repeatedly slaughtered the Lions with his leg, possibly as a subtle nod to the Brian Billick quote about how to approach a Lion's den. Going under the radar is Lamar's performance, which would've easily been a 300+ yard outing on 30 attempts had it not been for some bad Hollywood drops. This man just needs to get that vaccine; between the injuries and what kind of crap the Ravens have had to pull to win games, this season is truly terrifying.
10. Chargers +7 2-1 Hot damn, we did the thing. It wasn't a mistake-free performance, but it wasn't needed. The Chargers defense took the ball away four times from the normally mistake-free Chiefs and outlasted their comeback attempt. Justin Herbert tossed four touchdowns, two of which went to Mike "Contract Year" Williams. This is a statement win, but there's so much more season to go and more work to be done. The Chargers will be under the lights nationally as they host the surging Raiders on MNF next week.
11. Cowboys +3 2-1 This Cowboys team is ROLLING. Dallas is scoring 30 points a game, they've run for 358 yards the last two weeks, they lead the league in turnovers and turnover differential, and they went blow for blow with the champs. Its still early, but it looks real.
12. Titans -- 2-1 On Sunday, the Titans were able to successfully grind their way through a sloppy game against the Colts. Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry carried the team once again with AJ Brown and Julio Jones missing time throughout the game. Henry carried the ball 28 times and was targeted 3 times for 144 total yards. At his current rate (fewer rushes than last year through 3 games), Henry is on pace for 2,000 yards and 2,595 yards from scrimmage which would break the NFL record held by former Titan Chris Johnson.
13. 49ers -4 2-1 Shanny dialed up a great drive to take their first lead of the game, but he just left too much time for Rodgers. The offensive coaching staff needs to figure out how to get the run game going again, as it was almost non-existent this game. The team looks ahead to a divisional matchup with the Seahawks next week.
14. Saints +1 2-1 What have the first three weeks taught us about these Saints? A robust showing to obliterate the Packers, an outing where they were mauled by the Panthers, and now beating the Patriots in a game where Kendrick Bourne and Jakobi Meyers almost topped 100 yards each. Strap in because it's going to be a rollercoaster season - and not one of the good rollercoasters, more like the one at a county fair that has been around for 50 years and looks like it could fall apart any second but boasts the record for the highest top speed in the state so the risk is worth it.
15. Panthers +1 3-0 Though Jaycee Horn's injury will sideline him for the rest of the season, it looks very much like we avoided disaster with CMC's hamstring, which may only keep him out a game or two. The bad thing is that the next game up is against our toughest opponent yet: the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas. Getting to the QB has been our specialty so far, and the Cowboys will be without Mr. Bribe La'el Collins. Hopefully that means our pass rush can break through before the Dallas receiving corps finds the holes where Horn would be.
16. Broncos +2 3-0 Three weeks, three wins. The Broncos famed "Wife Guy" Defense has given up only 26 points on the year, including a shutout against the New York Jets. Yes, their opponents at the start of the year have been bad. But aren't potential playoff teams supposed to beat the pants off the bottom of the league?
17. Seahawks -7 1-2 Remember that excitement after beating the Colts week 1? Completely gone. After totally falling apart in the second half last week against the Titans, the Seahawks followed up with yet another rough week 3 showing in the second half. After scoring 17 points by halftime, the Seahawks offense saw the field for 7 minutes and 20 seconds. the rest of the game. The Vikings dominated the time of possession and completely wore down the defense. And wew, is this defense rough. Jamal Adams has not been the playmaker he was last year. Tre Flowers deserves to be on the waiver wire. LJ Collier, the Seahawks first round pick a couple years ago, was again a healthy scratch. There are some bright spots (Alton Robinson and Darrell Taylor continue to grow and bobby as always), but this team does not look right. Perhaps a change in philosophy is warranted.
18. Bengals +8 2-1 Ja'Marr Chase is second in the NFL with four receiving touchdowns. For those counting at home, that's four more than Penei Sewell has for the Lions. The Bengals offensive line is still a work in progress, but they did manage to snap the Steelers NFL record streak of 75 straight games with a sack. Rookie 2nd round pick Jackson Carmen made his NFL debut and did not allow a single QB hurry on the day, and tackles Jonah Williams and Riley Reiff continue to play exceptional on the edges. Overall it's a great day to be a Bengals fan.
19. Vikings +5 1-2 Kirk Cousins is on fire, dropping dimes under pressure and creating out of structure. Through three weeks, Cousins ranks third in PFF grade and fifth in EPA/play. That high level of mistake-free play helped the Vikings pull off a resounding win against the Seahawks, along with great offensive play calling, Justin Jefferson putting up another route running clinic, and the Vikings' defense finally showing up and shutting out the Seahawks in the second half. This team feels a lot better than 1-2, and they'll certainly get a chance to prove it against a loaded Browns roster on Sunday.
20. Steelers -7 1-2 Wow. Well the Steelers are a hot mess right now and the AFC North ain't gettin' any easier. It's not just giving up wins to division opponents, it's all of the penalties. On offense. So bad. For sure, TJ Watt is the heart and soul of the defense and it's not the same without him. There was too much missing personnel at WR. You can't be down your best defender, have your WR corps depleted, and then commit unforced error after unforced error against a crew keen to call penalties. The Bengals just played smarter, more disciplined football and looked far more competent than the Steelers did.
21. Patriots -2 1-2 While it would have been nice to get a win over the Saints, a non-conference loss stings less and it's good experience for Mac Jones, who needs as much exposure as he can get right now. He took some deeper shots as well (to mixed results) which is encouraging for a young QB that the league wants to paint as a checkdown machine. The defense also looked better than expected, although playing against Jameis Winston makes it more difficult to judge a defense on its merits alone - that supremely Jameis-esque TD is a great example of why. Let's be honest though, this loss is supremely forgettable in the shadow of next week's game. It's Brady vs Belichick week, so get ready to hear about that nonstop for at least the next 6 days.
22. Dolphins -2 1-2 While losing 28-31 in OT in a winnable game may sting, the Dolphins at least showed they could battle back after last weeks annual "Sean Mcdermott Hates Aquatic Mammals" game. The Dolphins need a sense of consisentency, at points the defense looked dominant and the offense looked competent, neither seemed to be able to maintain that level of play the full 60 minutes. Brian Flores is a good coach, but he needs to figure out the offense. Next week is a winnable game against a struggling Colts team, and we're getting close to must win territory early in the season.
23. Washington FT -2 1-2 Washington did not look like they belonged on the same field as Buffalo on Sunday. It looked like a Varsity/JV exhibition game where the bigger kids got too rough. Obviously, the offense and Taylor Heinicke had their worse day, yet but the defense continues to be dreadful. They also gave up a third-straight opening-drive TD, and it only went downhill from there. It’s hard to realistically see more than 3-4 wins with the schedule ahead.
24. Eagles -2 1-2 Reuban Frank said it best, "This brand of football is an abomination." Horrible play-calling, horrible coaching, horrible offense, horrible defense. The Eagles managed to play 60 minutes of a professional football game and handed the ball off 3 total times. Let that one marinate.
25. Colts -2 0-3 The Colts had Super Bowl aspirations, but now they have a quarterback playing a game on two sprained ankles. They're one of five winless teams, and things aren't looking to get better anytime soon with injuries to Quenton Nelson and Kwity Paye. It's frustrating watching Frank Reich refuse to use Jonathon Taylor because the Titans' defense was giving "looks [they] hadn't seen before". It's frustrating watching a defense hyped up to be one of the best blow more assignments than a pornstar in college. Everything that was supposed to go right for the team has been going so horrendously we're at the point where the quarterback with two sprained ankles is the least of their problems. There's fourteen games to go, but it might be time to hit the panic button.
26. Bears -2 1-2 The Chicago Bears ended the game with literally 1 net yard of passing.
27. Lions +1 0-3 This game had it all: Lions playing suprisingly well against a team out of their league, missed flags AGAINST the Lions (missed delay of game by the Ravens), and losing in a chaotic fashion. The Lions kept Lamar Jackson mostly in check throughout the game, forcing him to throw by containing the edge and middle running lane. The Lions are getting noticably better every single week, that should all come together against the Bears in week 4.
28. Falcons +1 1-2 Cor-darrelle Cor-darrelle Go! The Falcons took on the fellow bottom dwelling Giants and showed them who's the best and the brightest. The "charge" was led by none other than legend Cordarrelle Patterson, who on a team with Kyle Pitts and Calvin Ridley, has become the offense's deadliest weapon. Defensively, with two minutes left in a tied game, Daniel Jones was sacked like a bag of groceries, courtesy of Dante Fowler. Grady might have line help for the first time since Kroy Biermann hung up his red contact lenses. In special teams news, with the game on the line, Koo hit his first NFL game winning field goal with the accuracy Matty Thrice would be proud of. If this skyrocketing trajectory continues, Atlanta could be competitive against average teams by Q4 2023.
29. Texans -2 1-2 It's been a long September with no reason to believe that maybe this year will be better than the last. I can't remember the last time it was said that we were leading, now the days go by so fast. And it's one more year of a Texans rebuild, and it's one more year of "wish they would". If you think Cal McNair could sell the team off, I wish he would.
30. Giants -- 0-3 We all knew the Giants were bad, but it's the ways they're losing that's really starting to twist the knife. Amid a game wrought with cowardly punts and inexplicable playcalls, the coaching has to start being questioned as much as (or more than) the quality of the players is. A slew of injuries takes this squad from bad to worse, and the Giants are officially entering the difficult part of their schedule. Things might get ugly, folks
31. Jaguars +1 0-3 The Jaguars have done the impossible. This season, they scored a touchdown off of a kickoff return, as well as a touchdown off of a missed field goal. They did both of those things before scoring their first rushing touchdown of the season. If you read that and thought it odd, then yes, you're also correct in assuming that's exactly how the team has been performing in general: SNAFU.
32. Jets -1 0-3 Jets fans looking for a source of optimism might point to the possibility that the Jets have played the three toughest defenses on their schedule. Denver (8.7 pts/g), Carolina (10.0) and New England (17.0) are all in the top 5 in fewest points allowed. Some of that is playing teams like the Jets, but not all of it. Zach Wilson should put up some better numbers against a Titans defense that has allowed 28 points per game.

“There’s no way Gasol wants to be back nor do (the Lakers) want him back,” one source said after the season ended.

Instead, the Lakers will move forward with Jordan and Howard in the middle, although L.A. is unlikely to start either at center.

Since Davis arrived from New Orleans two years ago, the Lakers’ best lineups have featured him at center. With Westbrook aboard, sources said Davis has emerged as the expected starting center, clearing the way for a likely starting five of him, Westbrook, Ellington, Ariza and James, according to sources. Third-year guard Talen Horton-Tucker, a rising, young talent for the Lakers, is also expected to compete in camp for a possible starting role.

Ellington provides shooting on the perimeter after making 42.2 percent of his 3-pointers in six attempts a game last season. Ariza gives the Lakers an experienced 3-and-D player on the wing, able to guard multiple positions and fit in any lineup.

Source

What are your individual goals or any surprises in your game that might surprise people this season?

Morant: My goals for this season are, number one, to be better than I was my last two seasons. To be an All-Star and make an All-NBA team are my other two goals this season.

What are your long-term career goals?

Morant: Multiple All-Stars. I want to be an MVP. Win championships. I want to be in that conversation when it’s all said and done to be considered with the greatest to ever play this game.

Where do you feel you rank among the top point guards in the game?

Morant: Top 5.

If you’re Top 5, who else is there with you?

Morant: Steph (Curry). I’m a big Chris Paul fan. I’d say Dame (Lillard) and (Russell) Westbrook. It’s tough. The point guard position is so loaded. Some guys have to get left out.

When you and Jaren started playing together, people would joke you guys are the next Mike Conley and Marc Gasol cornerstones for Memphis. What did you make of those comparisons?

Morant: No disrespect to the OGs, but I’m Ja, and he’s Jaren. We’re both totally different persons from that comparison. We have a bright future, so we’ve just got to continue to live up to being two of the greatest duos to play for the Grizzlies, such as Conley and Z-Bo (Zach Randolph) or Conley and Gasol.

From 2011 to 2020, Either the Heat Won the East, or the Warriors Won the West... but they Never Played Each Other in the Finals

Just what the title says. This stat is really interesting to me. For a decade, two teams consistently won their respective conferences, so it's logical to think they'd play each other at some point... but that never happened.

2010-2011: Heat vs. Mavericks

2011-2012: Heat vs. Thunder

2012-2013: Heat vs. Spurs

2013-2014: Heat vs. Spurs

2014-2015: Warriors vs. Cavaliers

2015-2016: Warriors vs. Cavaliers

2016-2017: Warriors vs. Cavaliers

2017-2018: Warriors vs. Cavaliers

2018-2019: Warriors vs. Raptors

2019-2020: Heat vs. Lakers

How odd.

[Derek Bodner] Q: What is the reasonable expectation for a return in a Ben Simmons trade? A: "I think the kind of package you’re looking at is a few picks, maybe a pick swap, a useful (but not star-level) player in return and salary-cap filler".

In yesterday's offseason report by Zach Harper, 76ers beat writer Derek Bodner was asked this.

Not sure if this was posted here already

What is the reasonable expectation for a return in a Ben Simmons trade?

There are two different ways to look at this. What’s a reasonable return for what Simmons is worth, and what’s a reasonable expectation for what he can get back in a trade right now, at this time of the year? The two are pretty far apart, which is why I think Daryl Morey and the Sixers are likely to try to call Simmons’ bluff on not reporting to camp and not settle for whatever they can get right now.

Earlier in the offseason, it was reported that Simmons only had a few select teams that he wanted to go to, but sources have told me that is not the case, and he has imposed no such trade restrictions on the Sixers. That would open things up quite a bit, as the teams who would be most interested in Simmons are rebuilding teams in non-glamour markets, which would value not only Simmons’ ability to raise their floor and help get them closer to playoff contention but also the fact that he is under contract for four more seasons.

Add that all together, and if the Sixers do have to trade Simmons in the next month or two, I think the kind of package you’re looking at is a few picks, maybe a pick swap, a useful (but not star-level) player in return and salary-cap filler, with the goal of packaging some of that stuff in a second deal closer to the deadline to ultimately get the player the Sixers want.'

[Yates] Browns RB Nick Chubb has scored a rushing TD in 8 straight regular season games. With a rushing TD today, he would tie the longest streak by any player since Shaun Alexander’s 9-game streak in 2005-2006. Chubb has 670 rushing yards and 10 TD during that stretch.

The core leaders on the 76ers — such as Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris and Matisse Thybulle — and most of the team were set to take a jet to see Simmons before being turned away, sources said. Multiple sources said Simmons didn’t want his teammates, some of whom he considers friends, to make the Philadelphia-to-Los Angeles commute out of courtesy because he won’t change his mind on wanting a trade.

Simmons has mentally checked out as a member of the 76ers, sources said, meaning whether or not he ever appears in Philadelphia this season the organization may never again receive the same dedicated player.

[Fedor] Sources maintain the Cavs don’t have any “untouchables.” However, Evan Mobley and Darius Garland are closest to that designation. The likelihood of either player being moved is incredibly low. That leaves Collin Sexton, Isaac Okoro and future first-rounders to help cajole a Simmons deal.

Source

Most of the chatter has centered on Kevin Love. A large part is Cleveland’s desire to move him. But in this rare instance his bloated $31 million salary is somewhat of an asset, nearly matching Simmons’ $33 million number. It’s logical to start hypothetical deals there. Now just find the other pieces to entice Philadelphia -- or a third or fourth team. Then again, even though Love’s floor spacing and shooting would seem to be a good fit next to center Joel Embiid, Love’s still viewed leaguewide as a negative asset, which means Philadelphia would need an incentive boost, forcing the Cavs to add extra pieces in that deal.

In terms of salary filler, Ricky Rubio’s $17.8 million expiring contract would be much more appealing and it’s now past Sept. 10 -- the date in which his salary can be aggregated in a trade. The Cavs like Rubio. They are excited about his leadership and playmaking potential. But getting someone like Simmons means parting with valued players. Rubio or Love would almost certainly have to be the starting point, as Jarrett Allen and Lauri Markkanen can’t legally be traded until December, about two months into the season -- provided the Cavs were willing to go that direction.

Sources maintain the Cavs don’t have any “untouchables.” However, prized rookie Evan Mobley and rising point guard Darius Garland are closest to that designation. The likelihood of either player being moved is incredibly low. That leaves Collin Sexton, Isaac Okoro and future first-rounders to help cajole a Simmons deal.

According to sources, the 76ers would want limited or no protections on those firsts in hopes of flipping them for an All-Star caliber player around the deadline. That, alone, would be incredibly risky for Cleveland -- a still-rebuilding team that’s won 60 combined games over the last three years and is only projected to win around 26 this season. Even the addition of Simmons wouldn’t change the 2021-22 forecast that much, as the Cavs wouldn’t have enough short-term floor-spacers or shooters around the limited Simmons. Any deal would mean rejiggering the roster quite a bit.

Lol Giannis is so pure

Giannis talked about his meeting with Greek Hall of Famer Nick Galis (photo), the sentiment of winning the NBA title, and how he handles everything that comes from winning the title, including his reluctance to train with other NBA superstars who will be his opponents during the season:

“I can’t be fake. I am Giannis. But calling me MVP, calling me champ, calling me the best player in the world, is something that might hold me back. And I don’t want anything holding me back. I want to look forward and be better. That’s why I don’t train with other players. I don’t want to be buddy with them. If we do this and then drink a coffee with them, can I go in the court and use my elbow against them? Can I block or dunk on them? I can’t cause I am authentic. If I love someone, I love him also on the court. I am fully aware of that and I don’t want to put myself in this position.”

The MVP also spoke about the Finals and the fact that the Bucks did it as a unit despite him having a finals performance for the ages:

“I shouldn’t be playing in the Finals. I was hurt in Game 1. I was praying. We lost. In Game 2, I scored 40 and we lost. I was shitting on my pants, I was hurt. After that, we just wanted to defend our home. But then my teammates reacted, the team reacted, Jrue was all over the place. The key was how to manage my fear, my anxiety. I was talking with a sports psychiatrist every day, he helped me be myself. The free throws were a mental issue and I want to continue like this in the next season. And I want to see if we can repeat this as a team. I want to see if we can do it again, myself, my teammates, the owners, everyone”.

One player who could be affected is Nets guard Kyrie Irving. According to multiple league sources, Irving has yet to receive a vaccine shot. Both the Nets and a spokeswoman for Irving declined to comment on the record about Irving’s vaccination status, but Nets general manager Sean Marks was asked during a news conference on Tuesday whether New York City’s mandate could sideline any of his team’s players.

"Regarding if they could play today, I can't comment on who could play and so forth. There would obviously be a couple people missing from that picture," Marks said. "I won't get into who it is, but we feel confident in the following several days before camp everybody would be allowed to participate and so forth."

Earlier in the news conference, Marks said: "I think we all understand what’s at stake. We’ve had very candid conversations. … We don’t see whether it’s a citywide mandate, or it’s the league mandate to follow, being any sort of hindrance to us being able to put out a team."

The league's memos, which also state that a player who misses games "as a result of his inability to comply with local law might subject him to a reduction of his compensation by the NBA or his team," have changed some minds, according to league sources.

But multiple agents have said in interviews that they’re having trouble convincing their remaining holdouts.

"We work for the players," one said. "And they all have different reasons. But if they’re hell-bent on not getting it, there’s only so much you can do."

"Obviously, he did not honor his word."

"I don't think you're going to get honesty from that front office, just objectively speaking," Reddick said. "That's not an opinion -- I just don't think you're going to get that. I don't think what happened with me is necessarily an isolated incident either. But I do think across the league, front offices, they act in their best interest. I get that. I understand that.

"Truthfully -- and it's hard for me to admit this -- I think I was a little naive in thinking that because I was in Year 15, and I had at least attempted to do things right throughout my career and I honored my end of the bargain ... You can check for yourselves. This was probably 2 of the greatest championship runs of all time. 94 was an all time carryjob and 95 they were underdogs in every single series.

No Jordan or not, Hakeem absolutely deserved these 2 rings

In 2013 Daryl Morey got worried he was about to miss out on Dwight Howard, so he called Mark Cuban to ask about Dirk Nowitzki “Well, you’re not getting Dwight Howard. Can you trade us Dirk Nowitzki?“

Daryl Morey got worried he was about to miss out on Dwight Howard. So he called Mark Cuban asking to trade for Dirk Nowitzki.

And when the Warriors pulled off an improbable summer manuever to sign Andre Iguodala, it sent Rockets general manager into a panic. He was worried that the Warriors had just made a big enough move to convince Dwight Howard to sign in Golden State.

So Morey started working the phones for another superstar to add, and ended up calling Mark Cuban in desperation to ask about Dirk Nowitzki. Morey recounted the story at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, via Pro Basketball Talk:

[Morey] thought that Howard would be persuaded to choose the Warriors based on their addition of another All-Star talent, and so he went running to the phones to try to acquire another star of his own — without knowing that Howard had already made his decision to join the Rockets.

This is where my emotion takes over,” Morey said. “I go into a complete panic. I really did. I thought it was down to us, Dallas, L.A.”

So Morey called Mark Cuban to try and poach his franchise superstar.

I was like, ‘Well, you’re not getting Dwight Howard. Can you trade us Dirk Nowitzki?’” Morey said. “It was a bad moment for me.”

A really bad moment, considering that Howard had already informed Dallas that he was signing elsewhere, even though Morey hadn’t been made aware of his decision just yet.

Mark thought I was taunting him,” Morey said.

Cuban talked about it back in November, saying he felt like he was being messed with and that Morey was rubbing his win of Howard in his face.

"Definitely. And I don't blame them," Cuban said in November. "That's fine. But payback is a bitch."

But as Morey tells the story, it was more a move out of potential desperation. Either way, it's fun.

In Michael Jordans 37 playoff series, he faced 269 different players. He outscored 268 of them. The only player to ever outscore MJ in a series was Terry Cummings, who did it by a single point in MJ's rookie year by avging 29.5ppg

After reading the Hakeem post I took a cursory glance at MJ opponents and found that in all but 1 case, he's outscored every single player he's ever faced in a playoff series.

Terry scored 118 points to MJs 117 for the Bucks in the 4 game EC round 1 in 1985. It was MJ's first ever playoff series in his rookie year and he was guarded by 2x DPOY Sydney Moncreif, holding him to 29.3 a game. In his next playoff series he would average 44ppg, outscoring Larry Bird (who still put up a fantastic 28ppg) by 16ppg and would outscore his opponents in the following 36 playoff series.

[Gosselin] There’s a red flag for NFL officiating: through 17 weeks in 2020, there was never a weekend when 200 penalties were assessed. The high was 198 penalties in Week 2. This season, officials assessed 214 penalties in Week 1 and 221 more in Week 2. This trend needs to be reversed.

[Shamit Dua] On Zion basically ghosting the team this summer: “Zion's relationship with Griff shouldn't prevent him from being in shape or attending team workouts in Nashville. That's a convenient excuse in my eyes.”

Shamit Dua, one of our mods who covers the Pelicans, had plenty to say about Zion that wasn’t covered in the Christian Clark piece this morning. Mainly, that Zion has not shown up to off-season workouts and not been in communication with his teammates.

  1. Once again, @cclark3000 knocked the article out of the park. There's a lot of things that fans were in the dark about that are now coming to light. They have a right to know.

  2. Something I think needs more attention. Zion detests burst play, but shows up to the bubble out of shape and strains a hamstring. The Pelicans didn't disclose this injury. And while it wasn't mentioned in the article, it's because Zion's parents told them not to. I don't know when the coaching staff eventually found out but multiple people around the team at that time told me it was kept even from them! Is this not insanity?

  3. In reference to a post on a tigerdroppings message board about Zion “ghosting teammates” at summer league and off-season workouts, he says, “I can’t refute any of it.”

  4. He further added, “Unless he's showed up in the last two days or is coming today, he was not there last week.”

  5. The thing Pelicans fans need to ask is "If Griff was fired, would the situation with Zion improve?" And I think there's absolutely zero evidence of that and should scare the shit out of people.”

  6. Griff at the end of the day has not succeeded in putting a good team around Zion. In the grand scheme of the NBA, every single entity in the Pels org is more replaceable than Zion and that's important. But I don't see how you can observe Zion and be happy with his actions.

If the Pelicans start out slow, the noise around that team is just going to get louder. Sounds like Zion should have to be held more accountable, as well.
