Name a player who is having a great season but you just aren't buying it (ala Julius Randle last season)

There are sometimes players that have a phenomenal season and we anoint them before realizing that they weren't actually all that. "Is Julius Randle better than Chris Bosh ever was?" was a real thing posted last year. What are some examples of a player going off this year that you still aren't sure about?

[Bill Simmons] Simmons just floated Tom Brady to the 49ers on his podcast. "Tom waited to watch these games this weekend."

4 years ago, James Harden has become the first and only player to finish a game with 60 point triple-double.

60 points on 19-30 FG and 17/18 FT with 10 rebounds, 11 assists, 4 steals, and a block against Orlando Magic while being responsible for 86 of the entire team's 114 points.

Absolutely outrageous 2K numbers he used to bring not so long ago. One man system, and one of the greatest offensive players of all time.

[Ruiter] What OBJ did to orchestrate his way out of Cleveland is a horrible precedent. The media will fawn over him the next 2 weeks but I won't. Nothing to feel good about what he did, which they will ignore. Don't get how former Browns teammates can be happy for a dude who quit on them.

After last night's win over the Bucks, Jokic is now the overwhelming favourite for MVP according to Basketball Reference's MVP Tracker at 47.3%

MVP Tracker

Jokic 26/14/8 on 65TS% 47.3%
Giannis 29/11/6 on 61TS% 14.3%
Embiid 29/11/4 on 61TS% 10.7%

Linggo, Enero 30, 2022

If any of Embiid, Antetokounmpo, Jokic, Doncic, Gobert, or Wiggins wins MVP, that would set the record at four consecutive foreign-born players

Beating out the 2004-07 stretch of Nash, Nash, Dirk (which in Turkish sounds like "duck duck goose").

The foreign contingent of players are really beginning to run the new NBA.

For reference:

Nash (Canada)
Dirk (Germany)
Embiid (Cameroon)
Antetokounmpo (Greece)
Jokic (Slovenia Serbia)
Doncic (Slovenia)
Gobert (France)
Wiggins (Canada)

Today the last 2 reigning MVPs and current mvp candidates are going head to head for a delicious matchup, but the game isn't being televised on any channel.

I find this extremely stupid. We missed the first matchup because of Jokic's wrist injury and now the second game isn't televised. Idk why the nba is doing this. I don't care if there is football going on, atleast put the game on NBA TV, a channel dedicated to the NBA, how will it be lesser money received than playing some random old game on NBA tv lol.

With Bradys imminent retirement from the NFL, how are NBA fans going to deal with Lebrons?

Brady potentially retiring (story is sort of a mess right now) got me thinking about how its going to be when Lebron finally retires. Personally even though he was never my absolute favorite player I got really sad thinking about it. Lebron has been THE presence in my favorite sport since my childhood and is by far the greatest player I have ever watched as I never had the chance to watch MJ live. The fanfare and scrutiny surrounding him was and continues to be insane and having all of it, not to mention his tremendous play, just suddenly gone from the game forever one day really made me feel sadder than I expected. I feel like I need to appreciate the dude more while hes still playing. How does the rest of this sub feel about his inevitable retirement?

ESPN still not retracting Brady article

So its known Brady has not officially retired yet. So why is ESPN not taking down their article on Brady? They seriously trying to get clicks on an article they know is false.

Or do they have a hard on for Schefter and do not want to dispute his report, a guy who is known to be an idiot.

[Thompson] Steph Curry diagnosed and solved his own shooting slump: Curry had an Aha! moment in practice. He had developed a habit of launching off his toes and not the balls of his feet. On his toes, he generates less power than when he gets a good push off the balls of his feet.

But Curry had an Aha! moment in practice. He found the source of the shortage. It was too subtle for Fraser to see, too internal for anyone other than Curry to detect. In the process of self-diagnosing, he found the answers in his feet.

He had developed a habit of launching off his toes and not the balls of his feet. On his toes, he generates less power than when he gets a good push off the balls of his feet. The discovery paid immediate dividends. His shots started falling like normal in practice. The swishes came back. So did the pretty rotation on his ball. His balance corrected with the added burst. The oomph he regained behind the follow-through gave him much better control over the ball.

In 2012, NFL star receiver Cooper Kupp and his high school basketball team went against Zach Lavine in the state championship game. Kupp outplayed Lavine and led his team to the blowout win.

Even though Lavine was only a junior while Kupp was a senior, I still found this to be pretty interesting. Zach had only 4 points at the half and finished with 20, scoring mostly in garbage time. Kupp had 19 points on 9/11 shooting and guarded Lavine.

Also, Kupp’s hometown is Yakima, Washington. Some of you may recall this as the place where iCarly’s grandparents threatened to move her to due to Spencer’s immaturity.

Edit: Just to add more context to this, at this point in time Kupp had only received 2 scholarship offers from Eastern Washington and Idaho State. He didn’t receive a single football scholarship offer until 2 weeks after his final high school game.

[Wilson] Eagles guard Brandon Brooks announced he is retiring in a press conference

https://twitter.com/AaronWilson_NFL/status/1486369782941294599

[Bill Simmons] We havent seen an NBA star throw away an entire season of paychecks since Gus Williams held out in Seattle in 1982. That was an absolute travesty and accomplished nothing other than keeping Gus out of the Hall of Fame. [Simmons] is not getting paid. It's gone, he'll never get it back.

We are starting to have some confirmation that Ben is not receiving renumeration for his absence this season. Bill Simmons confirmed our long running suspicion that Ben Simmons (not his son, Ben Simmons, but Ben Simmons the delinquent 76ers player) has not received a paycheck since the season started and has since thrown away half of his $33 million salary so far. Bill's statement corroborates Adrian Wojnarowski's January 12 report that asserted:

Simmons, 25, is signed through the 2024-25 season -- a five-year, $177 million maximum contract -- and continues to be subjected to significant fines for games missed and absences from team functions.

I give Bill, a source of mixed credibility, the benefit of the doubt in issues related to Daryl Morey (/u/dmorey) because they are friends and that Bill has often been shown to be used as a conduit for Morey as recently as the last trade kerfuffle with Houston.

The reason behind the prior uncertainty was because Adrian's report directly contradicted an earlier January 10 report by Shams Charania that stated:

The 76ers have not been fining Simmons, as he fulfills team obligations such as training sessions and team meetings as well as continuing to meet with mental health specialists, sources said.

This is one of the few times that Woj directly contradicted Shams. It's also a rare L for Shams' sourcing. It should be noted that Shams is a Klutch Klient and, given his proximity to the (Ben) Simmons camp, the nature of the report should raise some questions about the sources' motivations.

Below is a select piece of the transcript of Bill's podcast, in which he breaks down the Simmons situation. The link is timestamped at 10:53, sandwiched in between a monologue about Joel Embiid. Everyone should listen to the essay. It's purpose is to celebrate the miracle of Joel Embiid. He gave Joel the highest praise he could give any NBA star, past or present, by comparing him to the likes of the legendary Andrew Toney.

Back to Ben. Bill, on Ben:

We haven't seen an NBA star throw away an entire season of paychecks since Gus Williams, my guy, held out in Seattle in 1982. That was an absolute travesty and accomplished nothing other than probably keeping Gus out of the Hall of Fame (I'm still mad about it). Well, Simmons was supposed to earn $33 million this season. He's already set half of that money on fire, he's not getting paid it's gone he'll never get it back. It's still unclear what he's trying to tell us. He doesn't want to play for the Sixers anymore because.. Rivers embarassed him? He doesn't want to get booed by the fans? He lost his confidence as long as he's wearing a Philly uniform? I mean, what's going on here? If it's a mental health issue, then how does that work for the 29 other teams who might want to trade for him? If Sacramento deals for him tomorrow, his mental health suddenly becomes fine, so it's a conditional mental health issue just related to Philly? For someone making $33 million a year (and climbing) in a league with a salary cap, how does this work? Well, the 76ers did the math and they still want Simmons to come back because, they know, when Simmons plays, they're one of the NBA's best defensive teams, they're one of the better rebounding teams, they're one of the better transition teams, they have size, they have an actual chance to win the title and if you replace him with anyone other than the best 30 players, that is no longer the case. Well, nobody wants to trade a top 30 player for him.

They're not getting:

  • Giannis
  • Steph
  • Luka
  • LeBron
  • Ja
  • Durant
  • Booker
  • Trae
  • Towns
  • Mitchell
  • Tatum
  • Harden
  • Butler
  • Davis
  • Bam
  • Jokic
  • Derozan
  • LaVine
  • Jaylen
  • Beal I just named 20 guys.

They're not getting valuable vets on contenders like:

  • CP3
  • Middleton
  • Draymond
  • Jrue
  • Gobert
  • Klay

And that's up to 26.

They're not getting valuable young stars from teams that like those young stars. Guys like:

  • Mobley
  • La Melo
  • Garland
  • Cade
  • Giddey
  • Barnes
  • Even Kuminga!
  • Edwards
  • Wagner!
  • Ayton
  • Jaren Jackson
  • Brandon Ingram

You're not getting those guys!

Well, now we're up to 38 guys. Injured stars like:

  • Kawhi
  • Zion
  • Murray
  • Paul George
  • Porter

..they don't make sense for either size for a variety of reasons.

They're not trading for Kyrie. I sure hope not.

That's 44 guys who don't make sense in a Ben Simmons trade. So, would Philly completely overpay for an injured Dame? Maybe? That's how grim this is. Trying to talk a semi-tanking Portland team into Simmons and Maxi and a hundred first round picks for a 32 year old little guy with a fucked up abdomen. That semi tanking team is probably saying "no thanks, we're good."

  • What do you think Ben's options are now? From the looks of it, Ben has zero leverage to force anything other than a return to the court in a Sixers uniform.
  • What can Ben do to regain trade leverage?
  • If you think that Ben should return to playing for Philly, how long do you think it will take for Philly fans to forgive him? What should he do to make amends with the fan base?

(Edited the post to modulate my prior statements of Bill's credibility so as to recognize the fact that the truth is ultimately unknowable.)

[OC] Aaron Rodgers has led the Packers to three consecutive seasons of 13 regular-season wins with no Super Bowl appearances. Only 4 times out of 23 streaks of 12+ win seasons has a team failed to make the Super Bowl. Here is the list of the 23 streaks:

In the 16 and 17 game era, there have been 23 streaks of at least three-year with 12+ regular season wins, only 4 of these teams failed to make the Super Bowl: the 2003-2005 Colts, the 1996-1998 49ers, the 2018-2020 Saints, and this year's 2019-2021 Packers, who Aaron Rodgers made sure to keep out of the Super Bowl by not throwing to a wide-open Lazard on his final throw of the game. Given Rodger's 1-4 record and 83.7 passer rating in the Conference Championship, he was likely doing himself and the Packers a favor by choking a week sooner this time.

The Patriots had an incredible run from 2010 to 2017 with 8 consecutive seasons with 12+ wins. During that streak, they made four Super Bowls and won two.

The Colts had a streak of 7 consecutive seasons with 12+ wins and won a Super Bowl, but probably underperformed relative to their regular-season success during that run (2 SB's, 1 SB win)

The 1992-1995 Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 3 out of 4 seasons while winning 13, 12, 12, and 12 games.

Here is a list of all the streaks and the Super bowl status of each team during those streaks. For teams with streaks longer than three games, I have broken each streak up into three-game blocks as well as showing the data for their total streak.

[Shelburne] Lakers decided against replacing Vogel, for the time being at least, because no one believes changing the coach will yield dramatically different results. Team source on Westbrook: "It's got to work. This is the only option. There is no Plan B for this season."

For weeks, the staff had considered benching Westbrook at a moment like this. Team sources said there was always concern as to how he'd react to such a move. Would he get defensive, as he often had when he felt like he was being singled out in film sessions? Would it erode the confidence that is so important to his game?

"It's not like [Westbrook's] a tradable player where if it's not working out you just move on; everybody in the NBA knows that," one team source said. "So it's got to work. This is the only option. There is no Plan B for this season."

WESTBROOK LEFT THE arena Wednesday night without speaking to the media. He was willing to speak, but a team staffer told him he didn't have to. So he left in a way wholly different than any other night he'd left the arena this season.

After Westbrook was benched, Pelinka knew the situation was at a critical juncture, so he met with Westbrook for nearly two hours when the team landed in Orlando on Thursday, according to team sources.

Vogel too has met individually with Westbrook several times throughout the season to try to find ways to help him feel more comfortable and succeed on the court, according to team sources.

A series of listless losses throughout the season have put the onus on Vogel at several points, most recently last week when the team contemplated whether a midseason change could jump-start the team. Ultimately, the Lakers decided against replacing Vogel, for the time being at least, multiple sources said, because no one believes changing the coach will yield dramatically different results.

Nikola Jokic's PER this season is by far the best all time and he is leading nearly every advanced stat in the league.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/per_season.html

https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2022_advanced.html

In all the debate about the MVP it's really hard for me to ignore just how absurd the output of this man is. He is putting up prime shaq numbers in terms of scoring and efficiency but has a killer outside shot, one of the best rebounders in the league and is the best passer in the league. He is also a smart defender who can get physical and make impact plays.

This man is stuffing the stats sheet every night on God like efficiency. It's interesting to go down the list of PER all time and see Chamberlain, Jordan with most of the best seasons but also Giannis and Jokic proving they are all time greats.

The Nuggets record will work against him but it's really hard to make an argument why he isn't the most valuable player.

Bills/Chiefs was a classic in part because officiating/replay for once did *not* seem to play a major role down stretch

It was nice to have a big game where I don't think penalties and replay were huge factors down the stretch. (Maybe they were but I just don't remember because of the craziness of 4th quarter and OT?) It was mainly about two great, young QBs duking it out until the end, and two spent defenses trying to hold on. A lot of great pure football to talk about instead of blaming the refs.

(The only drawback was the stupid OT rules. I guess they were the villains here.)

Philadelphia's preference is to wait until the offseason to try to trade Ben Simmons for James Harden or another star, per @ShamsCharania

Sacramento and Atlanta have been among the most engaged recently in talks on Simmons, sources said, but team officials with those organizations doubt the 76ers will lower the price threshold for Simmons before Feb. 10. Between now and Feb. 10, the 76ers will continue taking calls and examining potential framework of offers presented to them. The Charlotte Hornets have been among new teams placing a Simmons inquiry to the 76ers, but there’s been nothing substantive, sources said. In return for Simmons, the 76ers have wanted a top-level All-Star or a package featuring a bevy of first-round draft picks for Simmons.

For Simmons, the 76ers have asked the Kings for guard Tyrese Haliburton and multiple first-round picks, and asked for a package around John Collins and multiple first-round picks from the Hawks along with Atlanta taking on Tobias Harris, multiple sources tell The Athletic. The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the Kings do not plan to move De’Aaron Fox or Haliburton and want to build around them.

Over the past seven months, the 76ers have discussed deals around players like Fox, Indiana’s Domantas Sabonis and Toronto’s Pascal Siakam.

[Scotto] Michael Beasley: “My mom died when I was playing for the Lakers. My cousin died the game I forgot my shorts in Oklahoma. I was battling that day… I wanted to go to the funeral but I was already gone when my mom died. I wanted to be there for the team & the whole world just laughed at me.”

What have you thought of your career overall to this point?

MB: Honestly speaking, I think people don’t disrespect but overlook what I’ve been able to do in the amount of time I’ve been able to do it in. If you look at my per 36 numbers for every team, they’re All-Star caliber numbers (19.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists). My argument for my career is I’ve never been given a chance to play extra minutes.

Off the court, my mom died when I was playing for the Lakers. I fought through that, and I came back. My cousin died the game I forgot my shorts in Oklahoma. I was battling that day, trying to fight through it. I wanted to go to the funeral, but I was already gone when my mom died. I just wanted to be there for the team, and the whole world just laughed at me. My whole career, I’ve never been given a chance to show who I really am, how I can really play, show that I can really win and be somebody. The whole world laughed at me. It hurt my feelings. I’m not going to lie.

Did you say anything to anyone at the time?

MB: No. I don’t like pity. My mom was going through cancer, maybe a year before she told the family. She was being strong. I was trying to be strong. I was trying to show her I could be tough. That ѕhit was hard. I’m not going to lie. When it happened, it felt like an excuse. That’s why I never said anything. I thought it would die over (referring to the jokes about forgetting his shorts). That shit didn’t die. Every f*cking year that ѕhit lived on. Even my close friends don’t even know. I let them have the joke because if it makes people happy, it makes people happy, rather than going around and making people sad.

You were going to play for the Nets in the bubble before your positive Covid test. What was going through your mind then when you were about to return to the NBA?

Michael Beasley: I got food poisoning in the bubble. I think my fourth or fifth day quarantining, I woke up one morning, and I threw up maybe 20 times. I had to go to the hospital. I found out I had COVID in the hospital. It just went south from there.

Are there times when you have a quote where you’re being funny, and people take it seriously and misconstrue it?

MB: Yes. I’m such a funny and sarcastic person. I’m so witty, so if you say something to me, I’ve got a joke for it. I’ve got a comeback for it. It’s the household I grew up in. A lot of times, people think I’m stupid or crazy. One, take a joke. Two, understand it. Three, I want to do a podcast and name it Let Me Finish. A lot of the time, I say whatever I’m saying, and people get hung over the first three or four words without letting me round it off. It creates a lot of misunderstandings.

How was it playing for the Knicks?

MB: The Knicks hurt my feelings. On the court, I had Kurt Rambis there. I think 15 or 20 games into the season, Kurt came to me and asked me if I thought I should be playing? I said, “Yeah.” He said, “Before I ask you why, every time you go on the floor, just show the coach why you should be playing.” I had something to play for. Off the court, nobody knows this, but I found out my mom had cancer going into training camp in New York. That was extra motivation. I used to drive down after every game and every practice to Baltimore and kick it with my mom.

New York hurt my feelings so badly. I really wanted to stay in New York for the rest of my career. I had a good year. We were losing, but I was a bright spot. I used to drive after every practice and every game or get on the train to see my mom because she had cancer. At the end of the season in the exit meeting, the flight home from the last game was when they fired Jeff Hornacek. They had Corey Gaines do our exit meetings. I walk in, and he runs down my stats for the year. In my mind, I’m like you finally did it, got a nice contract, and solidified yourself a home for at least three years.

If you look at my career, even dating back to high school, I’ve never played anywhere more than two years. I patted myself on the back, walking into the exit meeting with Steve Mills. I walk into the meeting, and they look at me to my face and say, “Michael Beasley is one of the most talented players that ever put on a Knicks jersey, but how does that help us win?” This is one of the times I wish I had more confidence because I was literally lost for words. That confused me. After maybe 20 or 30 seconds of silence, they said some positive things, and they’d keep in contact with my agent. That wasn’t the part that hurt my feelings. I was so close to my mom, and my dream was to play in DC and be home, but being in New York was as good as I could get to playing in DC as far as being close to my mom.

Free agency came up, and we were negotiating. While we were negotiating my contract, it shocked me that they didn’t want to give me more than one year. They wanted me to come back to New York on a veteran minimum deal. I was like, that’s not fair. At least give me $1 million more. While we were negotiating, they signed Mario Hezonja. They gave him my number, and they gave him the contract I asked for, which forced me to sign in Los Angeles with the Lakers. People think I wanted to go sign in Los Angeles. Not that I didn’t, but Los Angeles and Oklahoma City were the other teams that wanted me. To fly six hours away after being a three or four-hour drive away from my mom that took a toll on me. That’s the part that hurt my feelings. I didn’t deserve that, and she didn’t deserve that.

Regarding confidence on the basketball court, it seemed like you could do a lot from shooting, rebounding, and why you were a high pick. When you said confidence, was that on the court or outside as a person?

MB: Both. It started on the court. The first thing that happened to me when I got to the NBA was everyone told me what I couldn’t do. That’s literally all I’ve heard for my entire career. Even if I couldn’t do things, which I didn’t agree with, what about the things that I could do? Can we make those things better or work around that? Every other player you build around, you build around how they play.

I used to talk to my therapist about the yips. I forgot how to shoot a jump shot. I got injured in Minnesota one year. Everybody laughed at this too. I reached for a ball Kevin Love threw, and my finger peeled back, and I had to get 10 or 11 stitches in my index finger on my shooting hand. That stiffened my hand up for about 18 months. I had to learn how to shoot a jump shot again. Even before that, the jump shots I took, everybody would say, “Bro, those are the worst shots in the league. You’re taking long twos.” These are the same shots I grew up watching Kobe Bryant take. I’m not taking shots different than Kobe would take, or what Michael Jordan would take. That did something to my brain that I didn’t know what shot to shoot. I literally just started playing not to f*ck up.

SVG tweet that started it:

NBA fans who think a team’s record should determine it’s number of all-stars — teams don’t win big with one star (i.e. Jokic) but that doesn’t negate his play. And teams like Miami have their entire team producing. That doesn’t mean that any player is necessarily in the top 12.

Bull's Executive Director, Content Strategy Regarding Yesterday's Morning Buck's Tweet that included Grayson Allen: Tweet was Confirmed to be Pre-planned and Scheduled

Source: https://twitter.com/itsluka/status/1485072120094863361?s=20

A reminder that people working in social are human. We were obviously initially upset about the Grayson Tweet too and the AC injury really sucks. We spoke to the folks behind @Bucks and this morning’s Tweet was scheduled in advance, meaning it was just an unfortunate mistake.
This is a hard job at the best of times. Everything you do is public, every misstep is out there for everyone to see. We respect the Bucks social team. They didn’t mean to cause offense and I’m sure today has sucked for them too. Please be kind and be respectful.

In case you are wondering why the Bucks social media didn't post this, it's likely because she was doxxed by angry trolls and was being harassed both online and offline regarding her appearance.

Giannis' comment on that: "I am humble. I always try to listen to my coaches, my teammates and the people I trust. I don't agree with that, I'm not the best player. And even if I was, I was never gonna say it. I don't want to believe that."

[OC] if Damian Lillard leaves the team to chase rings, he may be giving up on another pursuit — being the greatest player in team history. What other players are in the running for theirs?

When we talk about accolades for NBA players, there are always a few key items on the checklist: All-Star trips, All-NBA berths, MVPs, etc. But one rules them all: rings.

The mad quest for gold has led players on journeys all across the map. Are they trying to win out of a competitive spirit? To shut up critics and trolls? To earn glory that will last a lifetime? Obviously that has worked from time to time, but other times the effort feels a little empty -- even in success. Perhaps your team was TOO good (like Kevin Durant), or you weren't the MAIN star on the team, or your opponent got injured.

It's also fair to say that winning a ring isn't all that unusual. If my math checks out, a team wins a title every year. That makes 75 years of NBA champions -- 65 years of MVP (which started in 1956) -- 53 years of Finals MVP (which started in 1969). It's an exclusive club -- especially when you consider repeats -- but it's a growing one.

In contrast, there's a prestigious club that will grow more slowly. A basketball honor that we don't discuss very often. That is: being the greatest player in your franchise's history.

Perhaps the fact that we don't discuss that topic very often devalues the concept and contributes to a culture of team swapping and ring chasing. If we valued the Team GOAT as a badge of honor, perhaps players would stick around more often and build their legacy at home.

Of course, there's no easy way to define a Team GOAT. There's subjectivity involved in terms of what criteria you use and what accolades you value the most. Then again, when has subjectivity ever stopped us from debating player rankings before?

Interested in that topic, I wanted to go through the league and review each team's GOAT, and debate whether a current player has a chance of grabbing that mantle. An important note of distinction here: we're not talking about the best player to ever weigh a team's uniform -- we're rankings these players contributions on THAT team and that team only, as if their other years didn't exist.

Rather than give specific percentage odds for each, we'll group them into a few tiers. Locks or Near Locks (defined as over an 80% chance), Likely (somewhere in between 50-80% chance), Possible (somewhere in between 25-50%), Unlikely (5-25%), and Almost No Chance (less than 5%).

TEAM GOAT DISCUSSIONS

ATLANTA. For this exercise, we're going to lean heavily on total "win shares" with the team, which is conveniently listed on basketball-reference's team pages. Using that as our default ranking, two candidates emerge: Bob Pettit (136 win shares, mostly when the team was in St. Louis) and Dominque Wilkins (107 WS). Pettit may be harder to beat than young fans realize; he was an All-Star in each of his 11 seasons, and he won MVP twice. In fact, he cracked the top 5 in MVP voting on 8 separate occasions. Even more notably, he led the team to their only NBA championship. That's an incredible resume that's going to be tough for Trae Young to beat. Young can best Pettit in longevity and total points, but he's probably going to need to win multiple titles to get this more nuanced honor. We'll call this one unlikely. If the Hawks can reconfigure their roster and get back to contender status, then perhaps this ups back into "possible."

BOSTON. Like Trae Young, Jayson Tatum benefits from a "one-and-done" era where he can jump to the NBA and start putting up numbers immediately. He's in his 5th season right now and he's still only 23 years old. Averaging about 6.5-7 wins shares per year, he can potentially crack 100. That said, this isn't a franchise that's graded by win shares. They win titles. Whether you want to call their GOAT Bill Russell (164 WS, 11 titles, 5 MVPs) or Larry Bird (146 WS, 3 titles, 3 MVPs), there's almost no chance that Tatum rises to the top of this ladder.

BROOKLYN. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving surprised a lot of people when they chose to go to the Nets, a team without much of a storied history. Perhaps they were anticipating this post. After all, there's a wide open lane here. "Dr. J" Julius Erving led the Nets to two ABA titles, and Jason Kidd led the team to two NBA Finals, but neither stayed with the franchise long. Erving lasted 3 seasons, Kidd only 6.5. As a result, the team's leader in win shares is Buck Williams with 63. Going forward, the question will be: how long can Kevin Durant (age 33) last? How many titles can he rack up in the meantime? The longevity won't be on his side, but winning a couple of titles may be a realistic goal presuming this team can be healthy at the right time. Despite all the injury issues, they're still the Vegas favorite this season. Given that, Durant or James Harden may be possible Team GOATS. Then again, it's "possible" the team isn't healthy down the stretch and blows it up entirely this summer.

CHARLOTTE. Even if we include the old Charlotte Hornets' history here, this is another franchise with a relatively open lane to GOAT. In over 30+ years, they've never even reached the Conference Finals. Kemba Walker leads the way with 48.5 win shares, which is an attainable goal for young LaMelo Ball. Ball snagged 2.8 as a rookie, and is on pace to double that this season. If he can play 10 years with the franchise, he'll likely become their GOAT. Will he actually stay in Charlotte that long? It's TBD, so let's call this one possible as well.

CHICAGO. Super scorer Zach LaVine has proven a lot of skeptics wrong, but he'd need to clone himself a few times to come close to Michael Jordan (205 WS, 6 titles, 5 MVPS). Our scale only goes as low as almost no chance, and this certainly qualifies.

—-

CLEVELAND. The Cavs are in a similar boat here. Young studs Darius Garland and Evan Mobley both have awesome futures, but there’s a difference between awesome and immortal. Almost no chance they can surpass the iconic achievements of LeBron James here.

DALLAS. LaMelo Ball is chasing Kemba Walker in Charlotte, but Luka Doncic has a much higher bar here in Dirk Nowitzki. Thanks in part to his incredible longevity and loyalty, Nowitzki racked up 206 win shares with the team in addition to an MVP and NBA title. The win shares will be tough. Luka's career high is 8.8, so even if he gets to 10 a year, he'll need to rattle off 15+ years of peak performance. Going for multiple MVPs or multiple championships may be the easier path here. Can Luka win more than 1 of each? I wouldn't say that it's likely, but it's definitely possible. Dallas doesn't look like a title contender yet, but there's plenty of time for the kid (still age 22.)

DENVER. The international takeover continues. At the moment, the franchise leaders in win shares are Dan Issel (95) and Alex English (84). However, there's a Serbian freight train behind them that's about to run them off the road. Jokic has racked up an incredible 71 win shares in his career despite being only 26. He had 15.5 last season alone. Even if you think advanced stats are too kind to the Joker, he can make up for it with his MVP trophy, which neither Issel nor English have. As long as Jokic plays a few more seasons, he's a near lock to grab the GOAT status here.

DETROIT. After a slow start, # 1 pick Cade Cunningham is heating up and looking the part of a future All-Star. He also takes pride in his leadership abilities and may be the type of player to stick around for 10+ years. In terms of win shares, that may put him in play over franchise leader Bill Laimbeer (98 WS). In terms of legacy, he still will be unlikely to pass Isiah Thomas, who racked up 2 titles and 11 All-Star appearances. That's nothing against Cunningham -- it's just friggin' hard to win multiple championships.

GOLDEN STATE. It's hard to win multiple championships -- it's hard to be a Team GOAT. But at the moment, we have one player who has already done it. Steph Curry has recently passed over Wilt Chamberlain in total win shares for the team -- 117 to 114 (Chamberlain didn't play his entire career with them). Add in the fact that Curry won 2 MVPs and 3 titles and his overall impact on the game, and he could retire tomorrow as the greatest Warrior of all time. He's our first official lock.

HOUSTON. Perhaps Damian Lillard should take note, because James Harden essentially waved the white flag on his quest for Team GOAT with his trade demand last year. If he had stuck around, perhaps Harden (115 WS) could have challenged Hakeem Olajuwon (160) for the top spot. That said, matching Olajuwon and winning two titles would have been much more difficult. Looking forward, is there any chance Jalen Green or Alperen Sengun could threaten Olajuwon? Theoretically, sure, but realistically let's call this almost no chance.

INDIANA. Although he never got over the hump, Reggie Miller (174 WS) has a comfortable stranglehold on his team's GOAT. It's looking less and less likely -- almost no chance -- that a current team star like Domatas Sabonis could challenge him. Sabonis has made 2 All-Stars in his 5 years with the team, but his 30 win shares are a loooong way away from Miller. And according to some rumors, Sabonis may not be here much longer.

L.A. CLIPPERS. We have an opening, table 12. The Clippers have existed for over 50 seasons in some form or another, but they never won a title. Their best player ever is probably Chris Paul (team high 78 WS), but he only played 6 seasons with the franchise. Current stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George may have trouble matching that, but they have a decent shot to win a title if they both come back healthy next year. To Clippers fans, I'd presume that's more meaningful than CP3's good-but-not-great "Lob City" era. Let's call it possible.

L.A. LAKERS. LeBron James already won a title in L.A. and could potentially win more, but he has almost no chance to beat local legends like Kobe Bryant (team high 173 WS, 5 titles, 1 MVP) or Magic Johnson (156 WS, 5 titles, 3 MVPs.) Remember, we're only talking about their contributions on this particular team.

MEMPHIS. The Grizzlies don't have the type of history as the Lakers do, which puts this franchise in play. The best right now would probably be Marc Gasol (77 WS). But while Gasol had one DPOY, the rest of his resume is a little light for a Team GOAT -- he only made 3 All-Star teams and never finished higher than 8th in MVP voting. Given that, Ja Morant's ascension is certainly possible. Heck, he's on target to finish in the top 8 in MVP this season. If he stays healthy and sticks around Memphis for his whole career, he'll likely best Gasol in WS. Of course, the real key may be whether his squad can make a Finals appearance (the Grit n' Grind teams peaked in the Conference Finals.)

MIAMI. Prime LeBron James was the best player in franchise history, but in terms of career accomplishments it'd have to be Dwyane Wade (116 WS, 3 titles.) Jimmy Butler arrived too late to challenge that, and Bam Adebayo doesn't have the type of game that's going to put him in MVP races. I'd suggest there's almost no chance either can challenge Wade here.

MILWAUKEE. So far, we've given one Team GOAT to Steph Curry, and presumed Nikola Jokic is on the verge of cracking that in Denver. The same applies here to Giannis Antetokounmpo, whom I'll call another near lock. I don't think he officially has it yet though. Although Kareem Abdul-Jabbar only played 6 years for the franchise, he holds a lead over Giannis in win shares 115 to 81. Giannis should be able to pass him in a couple of years though and end all debates about Team GOAT status (again, career value, not prime value.)

MINNESOTA. The Timberwolves have never won a title or even made the Finals in their 33-year history, but Kevin Garnett still feels like he's locked into the top spot as a beloved Team GOAT. He racked up 140 win shares, 10 All-Star trips, and 1 MVP by the time he left for Boston. In theory, Karl-Anthony Towns may be able to challenge the win shares if he sticks around (he's about halfway there at 61 right now), but I don't know if he has enough of a two-way game to supplant Garnett in the minds of fans. A title would do it, but that's more unlikely than realistic.

NEW ORLEANS. If we count all versions dating back to 2002, then Chris Paul is going to grab his second Team GOAT here (as he leads the team with 76 win shares and came closest to winning MVP.) It's a beatable total, but can it be beaten by Zion Williamson or Brandon Ingram? If fully healthy, Williamson would have a great chance. He recorded 8.7 win shares in just 61 games last season. But can we expect Williamson to play 6-7 years at an elite level? And stay with this franchise for that whole time? That combo may be unlikely right now. Meanwhile, Ingram only has about 13 win shares in his 3 seasons, so I'm not sure he has enough upside to crack the top spot either.

N.Y. KNICKS. Right now, I'd give the nod to Patrick Ewing (team high 123 WS) despite the fact that he never won the title. Of the current crop, you'd presume a young player like R.J. Barrett may have the best chance if he improves and plays 10+ years with the team. Still, does he have it in him to beat Ewing and his 11 All-Star trips? It's between an "unlikely" and an almost no chance to me, so I'll lean to the latter.

OKLAHOMA CITY. If you include the Sonics history, then Gary Payton (124 WS) holds the lead over Kevin Durant (108 WS) and Russell Westbrook (97 WS). It's possible that young Shai Gilgeous-Alexander beats them in terms of longevity with the team, but there's almost no chance he can match their peak production and start winning MVPS. Keep grabbing those lottery balls, Sam Presti, because you may need another all-timer to get back to the Finals.

ORLANDO. Shaquille O'Neal only played 4 seasons with Orlando, so he trails Dwight Howard by a large margin in terms of win shares (88 to 48, respectively.) Younger fans may forget just how good Dwight Howard was in his day -- he cracked the top 5 in MVP voting in four separate seasons. I don't see any of the young Magic threatening that, so we'll give this one an almost no chance as well.

PHILADELPHIA. Julius Erving is probably the most iconic 76er of all time, but if we base it on resume alone it may be hard to argue against Dolph Schayes. Back when the team was the Syracuse Nationals, Schayes led them to an NBA title and made 11 All-Star teams in the process. He also leads Erving in total win shares, 142 to 106. Current star Joel Embiid has a long way to go to reach that company. Given his durability problems, he's only reached 36 win shares -- a total that doesn't even crack the team's top 12 yet. He can probably make an argument if he wins multiple MVPs or multiple titles, but that's an unlikely combination. Of course, if Daryl Morey can pull in a haul for Ben Simmons at the deadline then we may have to rethink that.

PHOENIX. Technically the team's leader in win shares is Shawn Marion with 93, but I'd say that either Steve Nash (83 WS) or Charles Barkley (44 WS) would be Team GOAT based on peak performance. I don't think there's much chance that Devin Booker is going to challenge for MVPs in the same way -- he's already in his 7th season and he's never cracked an All-NBA team yet. His advanced stats have never been great either, so he's only gotten up to 25.3 win shares so far. Still, it's possible that he can work his way into Team GOAT discussions in another way. The Suns haven't won a title in their 54-year history. If Booker can help make that happen -- and have a long, Reggie Miller-ish career -- then I think he'd be considered the franchise's GOAT.

PORTLAND. The inspiration for this post, Damian Lillard may have to sacrifice his chances to be Team GOAT if he never plays for the Trail Blazers again. In terms of peak performance, the best Blazer of all time is Bill Walton (who won the title and then MVP), but Walton only played 4 years for the franchise. In terms of career performance, Lillard is chasing Clyde Drexler. Drexler racked up 109 win shares (to Lillard's 95), 8 All-Star appearances (to Lillard's 6), and 2 Finals appearance (to Lillard's 0.) Where Lillard can make up for that deficit is longevity. Drexler left the team at age 32, while Lillard is still there (for now) at age 31. If he stays loyal and sticks around for 3-4 more years, he's likely to be considered their best ever.

SACRAMENTO. The "Sacramento Kings" don't have an illustrious history, but this franchise has been around the mill (first as the Rochester Royals, then Cincinnati Royals, then Kansas City Kings, then Sacramento Kings.) If we include all that history, there's almost no chance that De'Aaron Fox can surpass the individual greatness of Oscar Robertson (154 win shares.)

SAN ANTONIO. Ditto here. There are 5 San Antonio Spurs with 100+ win shares, led by Tim Duncan (206 WS) and David Robinson (179 WS.) When you factor in the titles to boot, then there's almost no chance that any of these young Spurs can reach those heights.

TORONTO. Kawhi Leonard was the face of the championship, but I suspect most Toronto fans would consider Kyle Lowry (75 win shares) their greatest player in whole. Lowry "only" played 9 years for the team, so it's possible that a young stud like Scottie Barnes can surpass that and surpass the win share total. Can he match Lowry's 6 All-Star trips and NBA title? That's somewhere between possible and unlikely. Barnes' all-around game doesn't lend itself to gaudy numbers and All-Star votes, but it's too hard to count out a rookie whose been this good.

UTAH. The Utah Jazz are good enough to contend for a title either this year or next. But even with that, I don't think anyone would consider Donovan Mitchell or Rudy Gobert on par with the freakish durability and longevity of Karl Malone (230 win shares) or John Stockton (208 WS). It'd probably take 2-3 titles for Gobert (third in franchise history with 82 WS) to take the mantle, and that falls into the almost no chance category.

WASHINGTON. Current star Bradley Beal has officially surpassed his old buddy John Wall on the win shares list (49 to 44), but he's still got some ways to go before he matches all-time leader Wes Unseld (110 WS.) Unseld also won an MVP and NBA trophy. The Beal Fan Club is formally petitioning for us to switch to "total points" though, because he's likely to catch franchise leader Elvin Hayes if he sticks around for next year (Hayes has 15,551, Beal 14,119.) Overall, it's hard to see the seeds of a title contending team here so we'll call this unlikely.

What made me think of this is learning Gary Payton II is currently 29 years old. Older than Andre Drummond and almost the exact same age as Malcom Brogdon.

Fox was so far off the table he wasn’t discussed when the Kings approached the Philadelphia 76ers about Ben Simmons last summer, sources with knowledge of the talks told The Bee, but now Fox is reportedly part of those conversations as well.

NFL Divisional Round Predictions Thread (2022 Playoffs)

Next up is the Divisional Round, /r/NFL! The picks get a lot tougher from here on out, as all the teams definitely proved they should be here by either being the #1 seed or by working their way through the Wild Card weekend, which I went 4-2. This will definitely be a an interesting weekend, with very good games that are really tough to predict. But let's do our best anyways! We may see an upset or two by the end of it all. Here we go!

Saturday, January 22nd

Matchup Time/Network Winner Comments
Bengals @ Titans 4:30p ET on CBS Bengals Confidence: medium. I'm pretty much sticking with Burrow to the end. To many, this could be the upset of the week if they pull off a win in Tennessee. The Tians will want to exercise a power running game, which they hope will have Henry back. They also have a very good run D with good TE coverage. Look for the very reliable Burrow/Chase connections to combat this, targeting the Titans' weak secondary. If the Bengals' defense can prevent big chunk run plays, they can pull off a road win.
49ers @ Packers 8:15p ET on FOX Packers Confidence: high. The Niners are definitely the underdog of this year's playoffs. An OT INT decided if they would be in and they took full advantage of that gift last week by embarrassing Dallas. This week will have them going to Lambeau, where it's projected to be a high of 13°. Jimmy G is still powering through his hand injury, which will be amplified by the cold weather. Especially since he's never thrown a professional pass in a game below 40°, fun fact. The Packers are the only team this year that went undefeated at home, and they'll keep that record going this week.

Sunday, January 23rd

Matchup Time/Network Winner Comments
Rams @ Buccaneers 3:00p ET on NBC Buccaneers Confidence: low. Surprisingly, this is one of the matchup this weekend that's the more difficult to pick for me. While Tampa Bay is still struggling through injuries to impact players, they still have a healthy Brady who can makes plays out of nothing if he needs to. On the flip side, you have L.A. who absolutely dominated Arizona, but also flopped against San Fran the week before. That inconsistency is what is making me lean more towards Tampa winning this thing at home, despite all their injuries.
Bills @ Chiefs 6:30p ET on CBS Chiefs Confidence: very low. I have no idea who's going to win this one. Both teams had to adjust midseason and their offenses had to work on more effective rushing attacks, letting them open up the passing game later on with more targets and less pressure on the QBs. The Bills have had the better defense all year, but the Chiefs have clutch experience with the advantage of homefield. This feels like it will come down to which QB will get the ball on the final possession. It's a little easier to bet on Mahomes here since he's been in that situation more often.

Those are my predictions, let's hear yours. Keep it civil and fun. Best of luck!

Giannis on his #24 in The Athletics NBA 75 list: "There are so many distractions now...you made top 75, you’re No. 24, you’re the Finals MVP, you’re the two-time MVP…I’m tired of this shit… I’m tired of the compliments. Like,OK,I know, but I just want to hoop. I just want to play basketball.

From The Athletics new article putting Giannis at #24 in their all time NBA rankings Full quote:

“At the end of the day, all those compliments, I gotta put them on the side, and you gotta keep on working, because those compliments slow you down,” Antetokounmpo said. “They grab you and hold you back. … ‘Oh. I’m top 24 of all time. I’m the big dog over here.’ That just slows you down. I don’t want to think about that. I want to think about what I can do better.

“There are so many distractions now. Like, you made top 75, you’re No. 24, you’re the Finals MVP, you’re the two-time MVP, or you’re that or this or this or that. … I’m tired of this shit … well, I’m not tired of it, how can I say this? I’m tired of the compliments. Like, OK, guys, I know, but I just want to hoop. I just want to play basketball. I just want to keep playing basketball and see where it’s going to take me. Enjoy the game, every single moment, and that’s what I’ve done my whole career. I’ve tried to play hard, and I’m going to keep playing hard. It took me that far, and hopefully, it takes me even farther.”

Since becoming a franchise in 1995, the Jacksonville Jaguars have as many playoff wins as the Dallas Cowboys.

This includes the 1995 season where Dallas was 3-0 in playoff games and won the Super Bowl. Dallas has only won four playoff games since in 11 appearances.

Jacksonville went 4-12 in their first season and then made the playoffs the next 4 years in a row - making two AFC championship games. Jacksonville also made the playoffs in 2007 and 2017 where they made the AFC championship game as well.

[Ganguli] Stan Van Gundy on Dwight Howard's NBA 75 snub: “Whatever the reason that he got left out, there’s something more than basketball to it. I have people ask me like, ‘Oh, do you think he’s a Hall of Famer?’ Do I think he’s a Hall of Famer? Are you kidding me?”

Source

When they saw the N.B.A.’s 75th anniversary list of the best players ever, selected by a panel of media, players and coaches, they realized someone had been forgotten: Howard.

“That was kind of crazy,” said Otis Smith, the former Orlando Magic general manager, who built teams around Howard.

Said Stan Van Gundy, who coached him at his peak: “Whatever the reason that he got left out, there’s something more than basketball to it.”

“Our core group, we understood each other and if it was time to not joke, we would just tell him, ‘Not right now,’ or he could sense it,” said Jameer Nelson, the Magic’s starting point guard while Howard was there. “We were winning so many games during that time it’s almost like, how can you tell somebody not to joke when you’re still winning? You’re still statistically one of the best teams in the league on both ends of the floor.”

One day, Van Gundy told reporters Howard was trying to oust him, and Howard, not knowing what had just been said, playfully crashed Van Gundy’s news conference with a smile. The awkward moment — Howard with his arm across the shoulders of a soda-sipping Van Gundy — became a meme.

“I’m not trying to run from it,” Van Gundy said in a phone interview recently. “I don’t think the incident that he and I had — we only had one — I don’t think it reflected real well on either one of us.”

“He came in every day, pounded everybody, said hi to everybody, made sure everybody knew he was happy in the situation he was in,” said JaVale McGee, who started ahead of Howard with the Lakers during the 2019-20 season. “He constantly was the ultimate professional.”

McGee added, when asked if showing that quality seemed important to Howard: “I definitely think it was important just because of hearsay and the way people talk about you in the league, especially G.M.s and coaches. It can really mess up your image.”

“I have people ask me like, ‘Oh, do you think he’s a Hall of Famer?’” Van Gundy said. “Do I think he’s a Hall of Famer? Are you kidding me?”

Van Gundy rattled off Howard’s All-N.B.A. and defensive awards.

“Go check and see how many people have done that,” he said.

[Lowe] Jarrett Allen on his secret: Every time Allen scores, the Cavaliers' game operations staff plays a specific Zelda sound effect.

The release of The Legend of Zelda, with its gold game cartridge, was a landmark event for any child of the 1980s and early 1990s. Allen was born in 1998, but grew up playing subsequent versions of the Zelda series. He collects Zelda-related memorabilia; his favorite such piece, he says, might be his 3D printout of one particular shield.

Every time Allen scores, the Cavaliers' game operations staff plays a specific Zelda sound effect -- the jingle that (in the original) played when the protagonist uncovered some secret item or entry point. (Apparently that same sound -- or something very close to it -- has carried over into more recent Zelda iterations.)

That sound triggers a little hit of dopamine in my brain. I smile every time. It brings back the excitement of having discovered something new in that game -- once you blew in the cartridge enough times for it to load.

Allen first requested the effect with the Nets, when staffers approached players for suggestions. "It took me about 10 seconds to come up with the perfect one," Allen says. "Short and sweet."

[Yates] Eagles CB Steven Nelson was made a healthy scratch in Week 18, a move that prevented him from reaching a 90% play-time incentive worth $375K. The day before the game, Philly gave him a $375K signing bonus to make up for that missed incentive. Very good on the Eagles for that.

[Bill Simmons] The only likely trade partner for a 76ers Tobias Harris and Benjamin Simmons package is the Sacramento Kings who would provide Buddy Hield, Tyrese Halliburton, and Harrison Barnes in return. It’s also becoming conceivable that Lilard’s value falls enough to ask in return for Simmons.

[Smith] A very, very, very weird @Vikings tidbit. The Vikings have played the Ravens 7 times in franchise history. In the 3 years they won (’98, ‘09 & ’17), Vikings went to NFC title game. In the 4 years they lost (’01, ’05, ’13 & ’21), Vikings fired their head coach. Beyond bizarre.

[Fischer] The Clippers are operating under the possibility that Paul George may not return this season, sources told B/R.

While the team's initial announcement on Christmas Day stated George would be re-evaluated in 3-4 weeks, the Clippers are operating under the possibility that George may not return this season, sources told B/R. And despite the momentum surrounding Kawhi Leonard's rehab from a torn ACL, there remains a healthy dose of skepticism around the league about Leonard retaking the floor in 2021-22 as well.

Question from a German 🇩🇪 guy writing his bachelor thesis about salary cap

Hello fellow nfl fans, I’m currently writing my bachelor thesis about salary cap and how to potentially implement it in European soccer (WE NEED IT BAAAD, current system is FUCKED) Soo.. basic system of the salary cap is understandable , HOWEVER: Beeing on overthecap.com, I stumbled about some terms I do not understand.. I hope 🙏🏼, you guys can help. Active Cap spending: in 2022, active cap spending of the saints is nearly 260 million, nearly 50 million over the salary cap. How is that possible ? How can I understand the effective cap space ? Any other major things I should know writing about that ?

Help is so much appreciated Btw Im a Patriots Fan, so im so looking forward to packers vs pats SB 😉

[The Jon Krawczynski Show] The Wolves are likely OUT on Simmons and Myles Turner

https://share.transistor.fm/s/ce54d8cd

  • First team in years where there is complete harmony - they all like eachother
  • Finch is in control of the offence with Prigioni being the biggest help to him
  • Talk about how Edwards has matured offensively since the covid break. More of an active passer, not just settling for 3s or trying to dunk it
  • Believes this is the best year of DLo's career despite general poor shooting
  • Calls Bolmaro a 'disaster' at PG earlier in the season
  • Jarred Vanderbilt deserves to be in the conversation for Most Improved Player
  • The Wolves deliberately fed JV against Houston so he could get big numbers in front of his family - CHEMISTRY
  • "Substantial conversations" with teams over trades
  • Gupta and Co believe they still need to make improvements to make noise at the end of year
  • More Shooting and a Big are desired
  • Had been looking at playmakers - Jaylen Nowell may have cooled that desire
  • Jon K believes they are out on Simmons/Turner - still having conversations with Indiana/Philly but the elite starting 5 has reduced the need for them - quite unlikely
  • Role Player/Fringe Players targeted to improve the depth of the team
  • They are buyers at the deadline but the deals probably wont shake the room

[Anderson] The New Orleans Pelicans, Minnesota Timberwolves and Milwaukee Bucks have seats reserved for pro personnel scouts at tonight's Kings-Cavaliers game. That's more than usual. Maybe it's nothing ... or maybe business is picking up with a month to go before the trade deadline.

[Kyle Kuzma] on the Sixers packaging Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris in trade talks: “How the hell you package 80ms 🤣🤣🤣”

How the hell you package 80ms 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Context:

The Philadelphia 76ers have begun to attach Tobias Harris to their trade discussions of Ben Simmons, according to Brian Windhorst and Marc J. Spears of ESPN.

Harris signed a five-year, $180 million deal with the 76ers during the 2019 offseason.

"I'm hearing they want to include Tobias Harris," said Spears of Philadelphia's trade talks with the Atlanta Hawks.

"Me too," replied Windhorst.

"That is the word out there because they can't necessarily get an All-Star they want in return right now, as the Sixers have continued their talks, they've talked to teams about trading Tobias and Ben."

Spears also reported that the Hawks had interest in a trade for Simmons until the 76ers broached the possibility of including Harris.

Windhorst reported that some executives have speculated that offloading the money of Simmons and Harris could pave the way for the 76ers to pursue James Harden in free agency.
